I was born and raised in Joliet, IL. I wrote my first story in the 3rd grade and fell in love with creating my own world. But throughout the years I have lacked the discipline to actually sit down and write. Even with a minor in Creative Writing (which should have been my major). I have been a avid romance novel reader since Jr. High and have read hundreds. I have lived in Chicago, Japan, California and now reside in Arizona. And I wanted nothing more than to combine my love of romance, writing and traveling and put them in a book. So one day out of the blue while in the middle of reading another book, the story that I had started months ago kept bombarding my every thought. Until I couldn't even continue to read the book I was in the middle of. I put down my Nook and picked up my laptop and about fifteen days later, I had finished my first draft of my manuscript. It was the most exhilarating moment of my life. To know that I finally did it. That I finally finished something that I had started. And now I'm and AUTHOR and PUBLISHER! I never would have thought that was possible three months ago. I just hope that everyone that picks up any of the books I write from here on out, enjoy them as much as I did writing them.
2017: I've never read a book that spanned over so much time like this. I really liked it in that sense because it was different, and it was just a nice change. Very nice!
I'd say it's nice to grow with the characters but every time the author made time fly by and the characters met up again she'd say something like (and I quote): "Day looked exactly the same except more curvy..." or "Chase looked just as I remembered except more lean with muscle" or something very close to that. So I can't really say I grew with them because they didn't really grow apparently lol.
I will give this a generous 3.5 stars because I definitely loved the first book more I think.
You know what I got from this book? Freakin' caramel!!! Okay, not really. I'm sure I got more from it, but my head is just blocked right now.
I don't know what it is about this book or if it just said it an obnoxiously amount of times but it's as if I was seeing it in every other sentence and.... CARAMEL! Caramel skin. Caramel thighs. Caramel shoulders. Caramel eye—wait nope wait... those were 'deep chocolate'. Don't get it twisted. And it's a big pet peeve of mine so that definitely didn't help anything.
But besides CARAMEL.. I think it was a pretty well-written conclusion to Day and Chase's story. If we're talking besides the many many grammar errors (I could overlook them though it wasn't too distracting). Then YES! A nice book to complete a story that began with two friends.
I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. It was just nice. Good. One of those stories I wasn't ecstatic to write a review about and didn't exactly know how to rate immediately after finishing. BUT I did do lots and lots of highlighting. It had its moments, and I did appreciate the humor and the couple of emotional moments I could get from it.
And although I did just skim past some (because that's just me), the sex scenes were very heated, erotic, and written so incredibly for anyone who loves that kind of thing . It was VERY passionate!!
Not my best review by a long shot but.. eh. 3.5 "good" stars.
2023: tried rereading. And I’m stopping at 43%, came to update on goodreads and saw my old review. I guess it makes sense but I found it so crazy the exact same things jumped out at me. Caramel. repeat descriptions, and cliche. But still a big fan of the time jumps. Still absolutely loved the first book, not so much the sequel.
Book one of this series was an enjoyable read. I could see the growth in Turner's writing from her debut work in the Struck series. For that I was relieved, because although I own her scarred series, I have been hesitant to delve into her books again. With that stated, the second book in this series proved to be less impressive. One of the strengths in Chasing Day was Turner's building of the heroine and heroes relationship from friends to lovers. The pacing was steady, allowing us to get to know these characters, their inner workings, flaws and attributes, and how those things shape the bond between them. Where things started to take a turn was toward the end, when it seemed Turner hit some kind of wall and decided to rush the major conflict that caused a separation between the two lovers. Instead of taking her time to explore it in a thoughtful way, it's presented in a whirlwind of a chapter, that leads into the second and concluding book in the series. To me this set the tone of the finale, and did so in a fractured way.
Where we should see growth between two characters coming into their adulthood, and learning from their mistakes - instead we see immaturity and actions that make little to know sense. An example of this can be found in Chase's actions once he gets his life back on track. He makes a decision that is completely out of the realm of reality. Given his experiences and what we know about him up until this point, his actions make minus zero sense. Toward the end of the first book, the same can be said for Day. Completely illogical decisions that do no mesh with the characters we've come to know. I know this is fiction, but even fantasy must stay true, not only to the characters as the author presents them, but to the basic tenets of logic. Without it, you're just writing nonsense. Another weak point that can be found throughout the series (but most egregiously in the concluding book, Catching Day) is Day's incessant stuttering.
Since the author does not describe her as having a speech impediment, this only proved to make Day come off as extremely immature. In the second book she is supposed to be in her twenties to late thirties and she's still stuttering like a fool in simple conversations. Makes no sense and comes off as completely silly. I find this to be a common thread in what I've read of Twyla Turner's works: adult women with low self-esteem who are completely lacking maturity and self-awareness. This is why, the first book is stronger than the second. The young love angle was written better and seems to be the more comfortable place for Turner to write in. When the characters became adults things fell apart, because the foundation of their adult selves was never written strongly to begin with. Even in times of strife there should have been some tangible growth between these two. Instead, Turner relied on worn out tropes to create melodramatic conflict that didn't add substance to the story she seemed to be building from the beginning.
Last, the intimate scenes weren't as plentiful and outrageous as in the Struck series (thank the universe!). There were some eye-rolling moments, but overall Turner got the temperature close to right. I especially loved the Cello love scene. Interesting enough, it did not take place between the two main characters. Good writing, all the same.
Still, based on the first book, the series had potential, and would have been far stronger if these issues, and some technical faux pas were tweaked.
Technically speaking:
The book was readable and well-written to a point. But the tells of lacking a professional copy and substantive edit were apparent in this series. There were plentiful typos, and one maddening issue of Turner's use of repetitive phrases throughout the book - particularly when describing Day's physical attributes. Turner repeatedly mentioned Day's "chocolate brown eyes", "creamy, butterscotch thighs," and "rosy cheeks." She also kept reminding us how chubby the character was. At one point, I thought, Okay, okay, I get it, damn! Can we move on now? How many times do we need to be reminded what she looks like? We know. It's like a hammer to the head, and that don't feel good. Still, these are forgivable book sins.
Final Words
I could write more and get very nit-picky, but I think I've given you enough to consider whether you want to take a chance on this series or not. Overall, I enjoyed it and I will continue to drop in to see where Twyla goes with her future works. In this genre, it's usually the characters that make or break the story for me. For the most part, these were solid, though I give the edge to Chase. Even when he made illogical choices his character remained consistent, and he was someone I really wanted to win! I've already stated the drawbacks to the series, and unfortunately, one of the main ones is the heroine, Day. She leaves the story uneven in many ways, but it has enough legs to keep you moving steadily to the end without wanting to throw your Kindle at the wall. My final verdict...
My rating for Catching Day - An okay, but not as good as the first time 4.5
The conclusion to Day and Chase's story, and let me tell you my heart hurts and yet is so full of joy!
I love when an author writes a book that I just get so caught up in the characters I feel like I am living their lives. Twyla Turner is still a fairly new author to me, but every book I've read I haven't been let down yet!
After so many obstacles and time has passed Chase and Day are finally at a time in their lives where nothing can get in the way of them finally being together. But there is one secret Day has kept from Chase. Will this secret prevent these two best-friends turned lovers from getting their forever with each other?
Day and Chase and Amy and Miguel in high school, and the 25+ year love/hate relationship between Day and Chase, oh my! I absolutely loved their path to a life together. There were so many obstacles, and Day showed her strength and patience until his mother passed away and Chase refused to deal with it in a healthy way. Day gave him a year to get it together and he got progressively worse...her resolution was to go to London and marry Rhys. That marriage was doomed fro. The start. She loved him, but she was not in love with him. Chase's f'd up response was to marry Day's arch enemy, Whitney Taylor. I was kind of glad Day didn't tell him about Lyric because it drove home her pain with what he did when he married her nemesis. I liked that Pat stuck her nose in when she felt Day was taking too long to tell Chase about the baby by sending him the ticket to the symphony. Pat stuck her nose in at the right time whenever she needed to. She knew what was going on with them since they were teens. I' m sure she knew they were having sex under her roof. She just didn't actively catch them. I loved the music theme names for their daughters. It made sense since she was a member of the symphony orchestra. This story was fantastic both Chasing Day and Catching Day. I am glad they persevered. True love and maturity triumphed over all their hurtful, painful games they didn't realized they were playing but they were.
I wanted to take a day or two after reading the conclusion to the Chase and Daylen series to let things marinate before automatically rushing off to write this review. In just 175 pages a lot did happen but what stuck out the most was the sex because there was so much of it I ended up skimming, and the breeziness with how life-changing events happened and the characters responses to them, which often their responses were lackluster. It was like 'this happened and here was the result'. Nothing was delved into (not like I wanted certain events to be delved into), but a lot happened that just made me impatient to get to the end. I don't want to make this too spoilery, but Daylen and Chase made some boneheaded decisions that took years to correct, and in the end I don't feel either of what they went through had changed them or even had a profound effect. Well, let me correct myself. Daylen grew more as a musician but besides that she was still the stuttering, rosy cheeked blushing 9 year old stuck in a 34 year old woman's body. Chase? He became less swoon worthy and pumped up on the cheese.
Umm, I don't have much else to say about this. The critiques I made about the writing in the first novel, they still plague this one. I'm not sure how to do a search of how often a word appears in a novel, but I'm sure I read the word "little" 75 times in the last quarter of the book. Do I recommend this series? Sure, I guess. It wasn't terrible but it sadly isn't memorable either.
The tears doesnt stop, nor their foolish knee jerking reactions.
Day did not take Amy's warning about being single and learning who she is......Nope, she fall under the manipulating spell of Rhys.
When Chase finally gets himself together, he calls Day and learned that she was getting married. He then, out of lonliness and vengence, falls for the manipulations of an old enemy if Day's and marries the enemy.
Immature foolery
Time goes by and Day's mom have a medical event and calls both of them. She had hopes of them being best friends again.
They give in to their attraction, but realize their lives are too complicated and messy. Day decides to make the decision to walk away for good and gives Chase back the bracelets that he made for her. She realizes that it is what keeps giving her hope and is tired of their hurt cycle. Instead she walked a way with a different gift.
They both decide to make tough choices and clean up their lives. Day's mom steps in again and invites Chase to see Day perform as lead cellist. Chase learns about the gift he left behind and of course he is hurt and wants to hurt her back.
However, they both start to act their age and make better decsions that take others into consideration.
1.75 Stars. Too much sugar for a dime and not enough for fifteen cents. This phase of Day's and Chase's story would have been better had it been combined with the first book of this minus some of the space filling/ time consuming empty scenes and the omission of the drama for drama's sake... Every life altering event know to man occurs within the 170 pages of this story: make-up to break-up/ seesaw love life, alcohol abuse, death of a loved one, life threatening health issue of a parent, poor self-image, spite and revenge, deceit and infidelity and "la piece de resistance" each protagonist enters into a short lived dysfunctional marriage topped by a secret baby. It is hard to successfully and artfully navigate a reader through this much drama in a 170 pages and this story is a testament to that. KUB # 16.
I loved this two-part epic of a love story. So many emotional highs and lows. Really a well crafted piece of work. Two things I didn't like: - the parts where the main characters fall in love with and have sex with other people but I recognise it was important in showing how two kids mature into adulthood, making mistakes along the way. - in all those years Day never thought to try and loose weight? Even for her own health?
So I know some people will take issue with this but why does Ms Turner and many other curvy girl romance writers pair up fat women with men who clearly work out and do so for their own health yet the women feel no compunction to do the same. I'd have thought a sexy fit man would be motivation enough to get to the gym.
I've read these 2 books 3x and each time I find something new to love about them. Day and Chase went through a lot but grew with every obstacle. I felt like was part of the book cheering them on and telling them don't give up, which tells you how amazing this author truly is. I LOVED Pat! I laughed out loud several times, she didn't take any mess. The author took us from when these two characters were kids, teenagers, young adults, adults, becoming parents, to marriage. This is one of my all time favorite books and authors. Twyla is one of the few authors who faithfully writes about plus sized women who aren't depressed, have low self esteem, or desperate. I can't say THANK YOU enough for that!
Just when I thought I couldn’t love her writing more, she ups the bar. I absolutely LOVED this series or duet, whatever you want to call it.
Twyla Turner has a way of making fictional characters feel like real people- like I actually know them. I didn’t want to leave their world. No two people were more deserving of one another and a HEA than Day and Chase. I just loved them.
Even their dumb decisions made sense, especially because this story took place over a period of time. So the mistakes they made early on made sense- it was typical mistakes of young people.
This was just everything. Feels like I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of Twyla and I’m not ready to leave 😂😂. So let’s see which of her stories I will read next.
I really loved this story. Certain things pissed me off, honestly both characters were horrible people when if came to their relationship with each other(in my opinion) but I was happy with the ending. I wish it would’ve shown more of their conversations once he started courting her though. Other than that I’ve never read through 2 books in one day like this before, I was literally addicted, hell they could even have a 3rd book (spoiler->) showing more of their marriage, considering we as the reader haven’t experienced them actually working out as a healthy couple for a long period of time.
I love reading your work. Your writing is scary because you don't hide real life you slap the reader dead in the face with it and for me it work. Yes, we have to go through the pain to get to the joy. But by the time one get there, one knows how they got there and i love that about your writing. Thank you for this book. I laughed, cry, got angry and smile. But the whole journey was beautiful. This is why i love your books. I try not to going into the story but i got to say i was mad when chase let drinking take over his life an he lost Day. But he got his Day back and more. To all you will love this book. 😊🐱
This was a beautiful love story. I have stayed up all night to finish both books and I have to be up in less than 2 hours. I'm gonna hate myself bc the power nap won't be long enough but once I started reading I could not put the books down. I loved the love story of Chase and Day. It was just sweet. I loved their HEA. May we all be blessed with a LOVE like that. Just minus the 25 yrs it took them to get it together 😊. I look forward to more books like this from the author.
Really enjoyed this story and thought the conflicts and twists added the perfect dose of realism to a favorite trope that can get played out. I appreciated the author giving Chase and Day several stints of personal growth away from each other (again realistic even if heartbreaking) and also thought the reunion was really well done. Enjoyed the story so much I re-read it a few months after the first read and liked it just as much the second time around!
Ms. Turner, you wrote another book that had me crying, laughing, getting angry, happy, sad, joyful, anxious, afraid they weren't going to get back together. This book was awesome. Day and Chase couldn't catch a break. Chase was in love with that fat child. I love this series, I will purchase the two books. In this quarantined situation we are in, this was what I needed. I have read the Damage Soul series so much, I feel they people I know. This series is headed that way. Thank you, Ms. Turner.😍
They were meant for each other, Chase knew it and so did Chase , but their timing always messed up. Life circumstances plus their own screwed ups kept them apart to the point of destroying their friendship that they swore to keep intact no matter what. There is a lot twists and turns in their bumpy road of life… but what meant to be will be. It will take them 25 years to finally get right.
I love Pat, I am glad she found someone and Ben, wow… it’s never too late.
Grab a copy and let Pretty Day ( Daylen) and Chase tell you about their long journey.
This is a good finale to the series between Day and Chase. We get to see them as adults and how they deal with life. After 30 years of an on and off friendship and relationship, their forever time finally comes but not without a few issues to see. Throughout their lives, their love, attraction, chemistry, and connection never dwell even when they are with someone else. This story shows that timing is everything.
Chase and Day(len) are really likable characters. As characters they made some good choices that they always followed up with some horrible choices. So I went back and forth between cheering them on and wanting to slap them for their stupidity. There isn't anything super unique about this story but it was an enjoyable read.
Can I just say I love and I mean really love Twyla Turner’s books. She is such a great writer and fully develops the characters in her book and the way she writes the love stories is so realistic and fun. I love this book and the previous one, and I enjoyed reading this beautiful story. Great job Twyla
What a spectacular end to a very good and entertaining series. The writer picked up from the first book and keeps rolling to the very end.We get such a full and wonderful story that is developed and leaves no doubt that you are reading a Love story. This was good solid writing and is definitely book club worthy.
Chase and Day ended up together. I guess it was a good thing that they had to have separate life experirnces without each other. Days husband was a dick, in my opinion he was a predator. Chase married a girl who didn't love him, but wanted him for his fame. When those situations dissolved they made it back to each other send built a family.
"Catching Day" was the beautiful conclusion to the "Chasing Day" duet. Day and Chase both made life changing choices that kept them apart for many more years. Thanks to her mom's medical emergency, their coming together during that time finally, but painfully, set them on the path back to each other. Loved this book!
Omg, Twyla is at it again! I have been so engrossed in Day and Chase's journey that I haven't slept in over 24 hours. The ending of their love story had me mad, sad and happy throughout this second book. Sometimes timing is everything and that has proved to be true with these two characters that I have fallen in love with. Outstanding book.
Loved seeing the conclusion of their story. I dont know why it couldn't be all in one book. Loved seeing Day be a strong, talented black woman capable of doing what she needed to do, but also loved that she had a man that would ABSOLUTELY take care of her in a heartbeat. It was interesting to see how timing is everything regarding relationships... and that's real
I lived this book it was so good from the first book this author is amazing she did so well writing these stories I literally stayed up all night reading and had to ask whose toning to take care of my kids in the morning? But I felt like I had a front row seat to someone’s life and it was good must read this book won’t disappoint.
I really liked the second book in this duet. I loved Ms Pat and her meddling self :) Twyla did an excellent job of protecting the base of Chase and Day. Watching them try and navigate life with and without each other was painful at times. I rekindled the fondness I have for classical music!
This is my second time reading this duet and it’s still one of the best duets I’ve read. I love how were taken on a journey with the characters. The go through their ups and downs but the love never dies. The ending is so beautiful. I’m so happy they got their HEA. Much deserved.
I loved the story of best friends becoming soul mates. The obstacles they have to overcome the whole way through you are rooting for them, easily ones of my favorites..
A other great story by Twyla Turner! I just loved reading about the characters in this book! I think this is a book that EVERYONE will enjoy reading! Please read book 1 first. I will definitely recommend this book to others.
I Loved it! I don't want to spoil it foreigners so I'll just say you had me worried. Day and Chance had so many obstacles in their path and the surprise in the end! I didn't see that coming! You have me as a fan Ms Turner.
