Blake and Brendan would do almost anything to get out of going to Mr. Becket's funeral. It will be boring and sad-and dead people are scary! There might even be ghosts! But Mom and Dad insist. Mr. Becket was a good person, and it is right to gather with his family and friends to remember him and all the good things he did. So what's so good about remembering a dead person? A lot. Readers learn with Blake and Brendan what it means to be a good person and all the ways a good person makes a difference in people's lives, even long after they're gone.

My Review: The When I Grow Up series teaches our children a lot about real life. The latest book in the series is When I Grow Up I Want to Be...A Good Person. In this the latest addition to the series, Blake and Brendan are suppose to go to a funeral and they are really weirded out by the whole thing. As the boys experience the funeral and run into some old friends and neighbors they start to see that there isn't really much to this "funeral stuff".
The boys learn that Mr. Becket was a good person and they hear many stories about him and decide that they want to be a good person too. So you and your child can follow along and read what happens next.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.
I would like to thank Bostick Communications and the author for giving me a copy of When I Grow Up I Want to Be ... a Good Person!, in exchange for an honest review.
When Mr. Becket, a generous and kind neighbor who was a fixture in their town for years, passed away, Blake and Brendan are told by their parents they must attend the funeral. When their resistance is met by their parents refusal to allow them to stay home, the boys reluctantly accede to their parents' wishes. As the townspeople reflect upon Mr. Becket's many fine qualities, the brothers come to some important realizations about life.
When I Grow Up I Want to Be ... a Good Person! is a story with an important message about doing good deeds without hopes for recognition or reward. The act of kindness is, in itself, its own reward. Although the message is clear, the delivery of the ideas sometimes seemed a bit forced. It was as if the author had certain points to get across and forced the dialogue to fit these ideas. This book includes many teachable moments about giving back to those around you and would be a good way to bring up a discussion with younger readers about how to make a difference.
Like all of the other books in this series, children learn so much. In this particular book, two young boys are getting ready to go to a funeral. They don't want to go, but their parents insist they must because it is the right thing to do. Once at the funeral they learn so much about Mr. Beckett and the life he lead. He was a friend to everyone. He believed that you had to be the best person you could. After listening to all that the different adults had to say Brendan and Blake decide that they want to grow up to be like Mr. Beckett and be the best person that they can be. I love the lessons that are taught throughout this book.
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
have read and reviewed a few of these books now. This one like the others has cartoon characters juxtaposed with real photos. I am not at all thrilled with this but have overlooked it as this is a kid's book.
This book, as the synopsis says features two boys who must go to a funeral even though they really do not want to go. The funeral is of a person (the good person) who was kind to many of the town's people. As the boys recognize different people they know, they learn about how good a person the man was.
Overall, I liked the concept this book in the series was trying to portray. However, it was almost too over the top. Really! "Mr. Becket" seemed to be the all around good guy with no faults of his own. I think that might set kids up to fail in such a way that could be detrimental. Still, I like this book.
I do recommend this one, just maybe with conversation on what a good person is to each child.
When I Grow Up I Want To Be… is a series of children’s books that covers different professions and life lessons as told through the eyes of the children in the stories. I have previously read four of the other titles in the series; Firefighter, Nurse, Teacher and Veterinarian so I was delighted to receive the newest instalment in this wonderful series – When I Grow Up I Want To Be… a Good Person!
When I Grow Up I Want To Be… a Good Person! is the story of 2 brothers, Blake and Brendan, who have to attend the funeral of a neighbour and they really don’t want to go as will be sad and boring. Their protests fall on deaf ears and their parents insist that they go as a family as Mr Becket was a good person and touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with and to pay their respects was the right thing to do.
Mr Becket was a kind, caring and decent person and the funeral service is filled with people telling their stories of how he helped them and others and improved people’s lives. Blake and Brendan, along with the reader, learn lessons of what is like to be a good person and how respecting and helping others is very rewarding.
When I Grow Up I Want To Be… a Good Person! is great story with an excellent underlying moral that will introduce children to being kind, considerate of others, what it means to be a good person and how the kind and caring things you do to help out others will be remembered long after you are gone, all while dealing with the difficult subject of death and funerals.
With its large font and colourful illustrations it is an easy read that children will enjoy while learning about morals and compassion without being preached at.
An excellent story with a great moral teaching. The WIGU series is a great series of books that I think every school should make use of.

I immediately knew I was going to love this book based on the page of quotes on the first page of the book. They are all quotes that I love and have written down in various spots to reflect on often.
Brendan and Blake find out they are going with their parents to a funeral for a man from their town. Neither of the boys wants to go, but they parents insist they must go because it is the right thing to do. Mr. Becket was a kind and generous man that lived eighty-eight years helping others and being a good person. At the funeral, the boys learn about the kind of person Mr. Becket was and the legacy his kindness has left on others.
This book instills for kids the importance of making a difference in the lives of others. It isn't talking about donating hundreds of dollars or asking you take on a certain career, but showing that no matter where you live, how much money you have, or the type of job you do, you can be a good person. Through Mr. Becket's life, we see the examples of how one person's kindness, compassion, and giving spirit can spread throughout a whole community. This is something we have tried to teach our children by living in a small town and giving of our time and talents at various functions. We don't just live in this community, we are part of this community. Mr. Becket led that kind of life and his legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.
I've been a fan of Wigu Publishing books for awhile. Their series WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE.... is a great way to introduce different career options to your child through fictional stories based on facts.

Wigu Publishing has put out some wonderful books that help children to be introduced into different profession and the ways to learn to deal with certain aspects of life. This book is about being a good person. When at the funeral, family and friends share stories and their memories of being with Mr. Becket. Those memories can never be replace nor can they be lost. Children, from a very early age need direction on what is right and wrong. What goes into being a good person and what goes into being not so good. The book is well written for children and adults alike. Wigu's books are learning lessons presented in a fun way. They help children grow up to be good, loving adults who try to do what is right. Sometimes you'll slip along the way but you must keep trying. This is another good addition to your Wigu book shelf. When you slip a little, grab the book from the shelf and read it again. A little reminder. The illustrations go right along with the story. Nice, colorful pictures. At the end there is a short story about The Elephant and the Blind Man. Two stories in one.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. No other compensation took place.
The story opens with the newspaper clipping of the obituary of Thomas “Tommy” Becket and brothers Blake and Brendan being told that they must go with their parents to his funeral. They object and come up with many excuses for not going but in the end their parents have the last word. There are many people at the service and several people spoke about the positive effect that Tommy had on their lives. His actions were generally in the area of encouragement and explanations, taking the time to do small acts of kindness and consideration. Blake and Brendan begin to realize that you can make a positive change in the world by doing small things that will compound over the years. They learn that a person’s legacy is based on what people think of you, not necessarily the height of your asset pile. The world is a difficult place and with all the challenges, it is easy to fall into the pit of self-absorption. In a very simple and understandable way, the author explains to children that spending a little time and effort can make a very big difference to people.

When I Grow Up I Want to Be...A Good Person is an inspiring tale that encourages readers to make a difference in the lives of those they touch.
Brendan's and Blake's parents insist they attend the funeral of a man they didn't know. Preparing for this to be one of the worst experiences of their young lives the boys begrudgingly get ready to go. When they arrive they are surprised to see so many people, many of whom they know. It doesn't take long before the brothers discover how very special Mr. Becket was and how his kindness and generosity affected the lives of others.
When I Grow Up I Want to Be...A Good Person is now one of my favorite books from this series (and I have read several). With all of the negativity in the world, which is magnified by the media daily, a book highlighting the life of someone who takes time to spread good is refreshing and exactly what children need. Mr. Becket is a man that people can look up to and should aspire to be like, a perfect role model for children and adults alike.
When I Grow Up I Want to Be...A Good Person is a wonderful edition for any home or school library.
My Review: After their mom insisted that they go with them to attend Mr. Becket’s funeral, Blake and Brendan found out how important Mr. Becket was to the people and the community.
They learnt how Mr. Becket cared for those who could not stand up for themselves. That he mentor young men, coach different sports, he taught kids how to deal with winning and losing and how to do both gracefully. The boys also learnt that Mr. Becket not only helped people but animals too. They notice that Mr. Becket was liked a lot. They wonder if they can be as good a person as Mr. Becket when they grow up.
This is an inspirational book for children to learn how to be responsible in learning how to help others. The illustrations are bright and bold which helps tell the story.
At the end of the story is a short story about The Elephant and the Blind Man.
FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from Wigu Publishing in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
Blake and Brendan aren't remotely interested in going to Mr. Beckett's funeral. But mom and dad insist that it is the right thing to do; that going to a funeral shows respect to Mr. Beckett and his family. As the boys talk to people they know at the funeral, they learn about what an amazing friend, good citizen, and all around good man Mr. Beckett was. They resolve to leave that kind of legacy themselves.
My children enjoyed the story. The subject matter is well presented and provides an occasion to talk with your children about death, funerals, and character. The plot showcases the importance of being a good friend and neighbor to those around you. The photography with overlapped illustrations will amuse the children and help tell the story. The book fits well into the When I Grow Up series.
I received this book free of charge from Wigu Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review. I have been lucky enough to get three books from this series. My kids love the illustrations and the stories that go with them. I often struggle finding books that are going to contain a resounding lesson that is digestible for my kids. This series exceeds expectations. This one takes us through a community who loses a very important resident and how we can honor all their good deeds in the future. Great book.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILER:
This book was okay, it wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't the worst.
It was about two boys that didn't want to go to a funeral, but they had to, so they went. My favorite picture is when they were arguing with their dad.
