Written in a very upbeat manner, Teen Beauty Secrets utilizes a bullet-style format that makes this book read much faster than its 200+ pages. Promoting health through proper diet and exercise, Irons's book would be a great tool to help teens who are wondering how to properly care for their body as well as those who want to experiment with their hair and make-up.

I found a few grammatical issues in the second half of my copy. Aside from these issues, my only major qualm with the book was the chapter on plastic surgery. I don't think this is the answer for most girls and for me, adding this chapter gave it too much weight. Instead of this, I think the page space could have been better utilized with a concluding chapter focusing on personality/social skills; though touched upon, being beautiful inside might be deserve more weight than doctors and surgery (though perhaps I'm just too far out of the target audience to appreciate this chapter).

As for the diet and exercise chapters, most of the advice was pretty standard: eat smaller portions, have fruit instead of ice cream, and get exercise by walking, dancing, etc. These chapters feature nothing groundbreaking or new by 2002's standards. This might make it a good introduction to general health, but most school health programs go more in-depth than this.

As for the accuracy of the tips and tricks offered here, I can't say; though I've owned this book for years, I didn't read it until now, and I have no interest in trying much of the advice. As an exercise in reading something out of my comfort zone, this book fits the bill; as a tomboy, I can't say I need or want most of the advice. Teens with an interest in fashion, hair, and make-up will appreciate this book much more than I did.
