This book draws upon three different types of literature - empirical studies; interesting anecdotes, stories and findings; and leadership skills - to create a text that is personally relevant, interesting, and scholarly.
Consists of 16 chapters, four of which cover specific leadership skills and qualities.
Another MBA book which I read through and thought, wow, it is pretty decent. Enjoyed this book and helped me become a better leader. I am fortunate the MBA school I went to used books which were applicable, helpful and interesting.
This book came as a recommendation in a leadership coaching program. I'd give it one extra star if I could.
The book is written by psychologists and it covers almost everything we know today about leadership. As John Maxwell says, leadership is not taught, it is caught. So the purpose of this book is not to teach about leadership just by reading, but to enhance the lessons of our own experience, as the title says. By getting familiar to formal concepts, stories, what has worked (and hasn't) for others, it can help us perform better in some circumstances when we encounter them.
The book is extensive and has a lot of valuable information to help us become better at practicing leadership.
This leadership textbook was provided as a mandatory reading for my Naval Science: Leadership and Management class.
While this textbook was brimming with insightful information on leadership, it was not transformational in any sense regarding how to lead in real-life contexts for my field. It was highly generalized and often focused more on the theory behind leadership than teaching and advising on how to lead. One does not become a great leader through theory, and I believe this textbook fell short on understanding that commitment.
The book was required reading a designation in pursuing. Information was as expected for a textbook. Geared toward college students though, not professionals with years of career experience.
Extremely comprehensive and not as dry as you might expect. My only complaint is of the incredible number of inset “highlights” which interrupts the reading (and highlighting for notes).
This is a great textbook. It is filled with facts and statistics, of course, but it is also liberally sprinkled with real life case studies and relevant quotes. Each concept is thoroughly explained and thoughts are clearly and concisely shared with sufficient detail. The book covers quite a bit in its 16 chapters; it never feels like the authors are belaboring any one point. The summary, glossary and exercises at the end of each chapter are nice study guides.
This book was required reading for a course. There are some interesting parts but there are other parts that just didn't stack up against other books that have been used in the program. I am glad I was able to rent this book instead of buying. Having said that, it does a decent job of comprehensively covering leadership concepts which is, after all, the point.
My first Leadership textbook in my program, although it is a great book and it is easy to read. A leadership overview. A must for leadership degree students.
