True Blood 10 Books Collection, is a series of books written by author Charlaine Harris. Harris develops a detailed mythology and alternate history that approaches supernatural beings as real. Titles in the set Touch of Dead, Dead and Gone, Dead to the World, Dead as a Doornail, All Together Dead, Club Dead, Definitely Dead, Dead Until Dark, From Dead to Worse, Living Dead in Dallas.
Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.
Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.
When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.
A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.
After reading the first book (and then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th...) I ended up with the whole set. If you watched True Blood, you know it is based on this series of characters, but honestly (and as expected) the books are more fun. The tv series tried to hard to make everything ‘sexy’ whereas the books have more of a sense of humour about them. What I really like about this series is that the heroine is actually, relatable. Not in the ‘we all deal with vampires sense’ (because...um, no.) but in the ay she responds to situations. Example: hears a bump in the house, chides herself for being like an idiot in a movie and going to investigate..but brings a baseball bat. She is funny, sarcastic and just ends up in the most ridiculous situations. The writing is real easy to follow, it’s not like wading through mud. You can easily sit down intending to kill some time with a chapter or two, and then realize you have read half the book. I would say that the last 2-3 books weren’t as strong though. Those seemed like the author kinda called it in, with rushed endings and some details that seemed absurd even by the fantasy standards of this entire series. Still, I would recommend this series as a fun read with engaging characters. I mean, we’re talking vampires, fae, shape shifters, sarcasm, and realistic responses to unreal situations.
There is something about Louisiana that is the perfect backdrop for the magic and supernatural. Sookie Stackhouse is just a Southern waitress that wants to sunbathe but kicks ass when she has to. I don't like the parts that are overly violent, but I do enjoy the mystery, camp, and humor.
This is my favorite book series to date. I absolutely loved the story in each of these novels and I wish it could continue... I felt like I was acquainted with every character that was introduced and I loved the level of description in each novel. Books #1-10 really piqued my interest and I very much enjoyed them. Books #11-12 were a disappointment to me; they felt rushed and half-done just in an effort to finish the series and make readers happy (Don't even get me started on book #13). Though I thoroughly detested the end of the series and who Sookie ended up choosing and why, I still appreciate everything that brought her to that point. I've read the series four times and it still entertains me each time I pick up these books. It probably sounds stupid, but they're books that I feel like I can trust to get lost in and find an escape from reality for a while. I did not enjoy any of Harris' other novels, but I adore these.
OK. I thought that I'd stop after the first book, but I was oddly hooked. Her writing style is not my favorite; it's more straight forward and action based, rather than a detailed picture. But her plot was unconventional enough for me to skim through and find out what was going to happen. Kind of like how you can't stop watching poor TV shows. But then again, I read the entire series...
I finally finished this series and I loved it. The final ending wasn't exactly what I thought it would but it is 100% amazing. Now I'm off to see what its' TV series TrueBlood is like. GREAT READ! ADDICTING!
