When a naive encounter at a Coronation party leaves sixteen-year-old Janet Slater pregnant there's no question in her scandalised parents' mind of her keeping the baby. Bundled off to a home for unmarried mothers in South London, Janet is about to face the hardest moment of her sheltered life alone. Forced to give her tiny daughter up for adoption, Janet promises her that one day, come what may, she'll find her...In the years that follow it seems, however hard Janet tries, it is a promise that will be impossible to keep. Nonetheless, she builds her life around her secret and Paula, her lost daughter, is never far from her thoughts. And one day, her searching pays off - the road to their longed-for reunion seems clear. But then a new shadow falls across the fragile happiness of both their lives...
Dee Williams grew up in Rotherhithe, East London, and left school at fourteen. After living abroad, she settled in Hampshire with her husband, where she remains active as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness while staying close to her family.
I have mixed feelings about this book which I read as an audio book. I loved following the characters through the book as they aged and I loved that there were not too many of them as that made it easier to follow. I thought the characters and their plots were believable but personally found the main character Janet very annoying the older she got and along with the plot being a bit predictable spoilt it a bit for me. Having said all this as an audio book it was easy to listen and walk to and as the plot was so simple i didn't crash into anything trying to follow it.
Nice little book and some great characters. I just thought it was a bit obvious what was going to happen. Nicely done about snobbery and shame and the heartache that comes with it. The thing I liked about this book was the friendships of everyone.

Very good. Emotional rollercoaster from the start as you encounter heartwarming characters and a story that will have you hooked and in tears that will stay with you for a long time afterward.
