Oliver is an elegant tuxedo cat, who is full of himself. As a matter of fact he “I love myself!”, quite often. Naughty, isn’t he? But his best friend Jumpy, a kangaroo lady, is aware that he has a soft heart and will always want to help others. The great thing is Jumpy’s pouch, which Oliver loves to ride in! He calls her his kangaroo taxi! These little bedtime stories with their lovely illustrations are great for small kids. A parent can read the text and tell the child in his own words. These animal stories have sufficient text to keep early readers happy and provide some educational value. Love you all! Meow! Space Ball - An alien arrives by UFO in Sillandia from a serious planet at Halloween to become happy again.Cat King - Through the magic door and Oliver becomes king. He even has a bride waiting for him.Saving Fairyland - Fairyland has been devastated by the giant and the magician. Oliver and team needs to fight them.
Now also a Romantasy author! Born in Vienna, Austria, I am now living in the paradise of Perth, Australia with my wife, two married children and three grandchildren. I worked many years in the printing industry and later for the United Nations in Vienna. My wife had been a pen-friend, whom I visited in Hong Kong and finally got married to. After an eventful life, finally retired, I began to write children's stories, had them illustrated through Odesk, narrated them myself for YouTube and finally published the ebooks on most platforms. I will publish 20 books with three stories each in English, before translating into several other languages. My dream is to see "Oliver and Jumpy" animated as a TV series.
Three more lively tales of a cat and his kangaroo friends. In this episode we get an Aladdin story, complete with flying carpets; a birthday party in a tree house; and a cautionary tale about eating berries in the woods when you don't know what they are or what they might do to you. After the African adventure I think Oliver deserved a happy birthday don't you!
The pictures will involve young readers and the text will encourage them to learn to read. They can also learn a few lessons and see what fun looks like. Party time!
Author Werner Stejskal has written over 50 children's stories about Oliver the tomcat and his best friend, Jumpy, all published as e-books. The book containing stories 43-45 was my first encounter with his work. As always with kids' books, I read them aloud to my kids (2.5 and 5 next week!) because I feel like an adult-only review of a children's book is just silly - of course, it matters what I think as a mother, but it's essential to see a kid's reaction to a book in order to really judge its worth. So, one day I sat down on my bed with my kids and my Kindle and we read the stories. Here's a brief synopsis of each story:
Story #43, Flying Carpet: Oliver and Jumpy travel to Africa (probably Egypt, given the references to the pyramids and the sphinx) to rescue a princess in trouble. When they get there, they're given a magic, flying carpet that takes them exactly where they need to go to help the princess meet her prince.
Story #44, Birthday Party: Oliver's friends throw him a surprise birthday party, with paid singers, elephant rides, and a mud-ball fight. He thinks it's the best birthday ever!
Story #45, Magic Berries: Jumpy eats magic berries that change his size. In order to change back to normal, he has to complete a quest without succumbing to any of the temptations along the way: free ice cream, hot dogs, and soft drinks.
All in all, I was underwhelmed by the books. They were fine - they're short, and engaging enough, but I feel like (except for maybe #45) they generally lack a message. I like to learn from what I read, and I like the same for my kids. I also don't particularly care for how often Oliver points out how well-known he is... sort of a "look how great I am!" attitude that I don't particularly want my kids to adopt. On the plus side, the illustrations pair really well with the stories, which is really nice, and the stories are generally harmless entertainment.
What did the kids think? It's hard to tell. Honestly, I think they were much more interested in getting to "turn the page" on my Kindle than they were in the stories. I'm not sure if that's just because they'd never used a Kindle before (I never let them touch it!), but they also have never asked me about the stories again (not even to have a chance to touch the Kindle again). So, I'd say their verdict is pretty similar to mine.
So, three stars. Generally fine, nothing to rave about but not bad, either. That said, I don't think I'm a fan of e-books for young kids. Maybe I'll change my mind as my five-year-old gets older and reads more on her own, but for now...we'll stick to paper.
*This book is currently available on Amazon for free. I obtained my free copy of the book for the purpose of reviewing, at the request of the author.
Werner Stejskal has written a delightful new book, stories 43-45, to add to his Oliver and Jumpy series. All Oliver’s fans will be excited to read the three new stories of Oliver, the tomcat, and his kangaroo friends, Jumpy and Joey.
In story 43, Oliver and Jumpy go to Egypt to rescue a princess. They buy a magic flying carpet at a bazaar for the purpose. It takes them right to the princess. They outmaneuver their pursuers and bring the princess to safety in a neighboring kingdom. She meets her love, the Prince, and they all celebrate the marriage.
In story 44, Oliver arrives home to his treehouse to find his surprise birthday party. It is Oliver’s birthday, and his friends have decorated the house beautifully. There is a lovely birthday cake with candles. Four colorful parrots have been hired to sing “Happy Birthday to you!” The excitement goes on and on. What a birthday for Oliver!
In story 45, Oliver, Jumpy and Joey want to visit Ghost Castle. The friends have had a few adventures there before. They never know what to expect. This time, however, they have an adventure on the way to the castle. Joey sees some red berries and eats them before his mom can stop him. He shrinks to 1/3 his normal size. He tries yellow and blue berries but cannot get his size and shape back. The friends seek the wood-fairy to help Joey. Will Joey get to be the normal Joey again?
Mario Tereso illustrates story no.43. His style is colorful and professional but somewhat stiff. Vikas Upadhyay illustrates story 44. Mayee Ann Reyes illustrates story 45. The illustrations from these last two illustrators are really wonderful. They are colorful, fluid, lively and compliment the stories beautifully.
These Oliver and Jumpy stories are excellent bedtime stories for small children. Adults can read and explain the stories to their children. All the stories end happily. If there is any danger or worry in any of the stories, the children feel safe that Oliver and his friends are out of danger.
This book is part of a series called Oliver and Jumpy. This particular volume has stories 43 - Flying Carpet, 44 - Birthday Party, and 45 - Magic Berries. It is an excellent gift for parents with children under 8 as suggested by the author. The book is beautifully illustrated by Mario Tereso (Stories 43), Vikas Upadhyay (Story 44) and Maycee Ann Reyes (story 45) and that is a very important plus, as its main audience will rely on the images to follow the stories, as many will not have reached the age to start reading by themselves. In "Flying Carpet", Oliver goes to Africa to save another princess, but he does not go alone. He takes with him his friend Jumpy! and the adventure starts when they reach Egypt and they receive a flying carpet!. In the "Birthday Party", Oliver is greeted when arriving home with a surprising birthday party organized by his friends. Finally in "Magic Berries", Oliver, Jumpy and Joey are back into Ghost Castle and Joey find some berries and eat them. That causes some side effects. Trying to correct that, he eats another variate of berries and something different happen! Finally they find wood-fairy that takes care of everything and makes things go back to normal! All stories are very sweet and even touching and the characters are always showing good behavior. No violence, nothing too scary or too exciting, it will keep your toddler entertained (but not excited) during that critical bedtime period. They will love the stories and soon enough Oliver and Jumpy will be in their hearts forever.
In my kindle fire the story was presented in landscape orientation. No option to have it in portrait orientation, but this is far away from being a problem. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Oliver has become quite the Royalist. He's off to rescue another princess, but this time he takes Jumpy and Joey along for the ride. A magic carpet ride, of course. Well, everyone wants to test drive one of those, but I thought it was ungentlemanly of him to suggest that Jumpy's weight was slowing down the magic carpet. He's lucky she didn't kick HIM into the Nile! And the Handsome Prince and the Beautiful Princess lived happily ever after (or at least until Oliver, Jumpy, and Joey left to return to Silandia.)
In the second story, Oliver's friends throw him a surprise birthday party. His tree-house was "full of people" - if you consider a bear, a kangaroo, a gopher, a skunk, an owl, a mouse, and a cat "people." A quartet of parrots sang "Happy Birthday" and a couple of monkeys provided dance music. That gopher was (as the young folks here say) "bustin' the moves." Oliver left the elephant riding to the kids now that he's a mature feline gentleman of .... Well, I'll let you count the candles yourself.
But "Magic Berries" is my favorite. Young Joey gets a wonderful lesson in the value of "looking before you leap." He learns that he can achieve what he sets out to do, but only if he resists temptation and exercises self-control. What a great message for people of all ages.
Three more fine stories in an out-standing series. Well-written, imaginative, and beautifully illustrated.
Oliver and Jumpy meet the most interesting people when they have adventures. They enjoy traveling and learning from others. Story 43- Flying Carpet takes them to Africa. There they find a princess who is danger. A man in the market place gives Oliver and Jumpy a flying carpet to rescue the princess. Story 44- Birthday Party-Guess what? It's Oliver's birthday! As soon as he and Jumpy arrive from their latest adventure, his friends throw him a birthday party. Story 45-Magic Berries-Once again the two friends are headed to Ghost Castle. They always have a unique adventure there. After they arrive, Joey finds some berries. He's so excited to have a snack. The berries are dangerous.
This series is one of the best on the market. They are well written and the plot is solid. The characters become instant friends with your child. Oliver and Jumpy love to share the new things they've learn on their adventures too. I'd like to see this series as a kid's show. I'm very certain it would gain a loyal and large following. Mr Stejskal books are just the right size for nap time or bed time. You can't go wrong with this series or author.
I found no issues in this one.
I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it works the imagination. Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
Though I haven't read any of the other books in this series, I took advantage of a free promotional period to download and read the book. I'm always looking for engaging ways for the kids that I tutor in reading at the local grade school to share my love of reading. Though the story lines in this series are quite simple and the stories rather short, the beautiful artwork helps to hold a child's interest. I gave a quick read through on my Kindle Paperwhite, and though the text is clear enough, you really need a color display in order to enjoy the color illustrations.
Then I downloaded it to my IPad and the pages are beautiful and complement the story nicely. I think the text block could be larger. There is a large amount of text with a fairly small font on each page which could be difficult for a young reader to follow. There are also spelling errors, which is really not acceptable in a professionally published book. For instance pyramides and particularily. There are also grammar errors such as "Jumpy and I was invited..." It should be "were invited". There are also punctuation errors. Additionally the cover page indicates that books 43-54 are included, but only 43-45 are included. A bit more attention to detail is required to elevate this to a professional level.
This is my first ever Oliver and Jumpy book with fun adventures in each tale. I didn't feel that I had missed much by not reading earlier books in the series. The grade would have been lower, because there were several grammar issues, part of 2 stories didn't quite make sense to me, some words didn't fit the readership, and one fairy's clothes was immodest when another wasn't, but because I enjoyed the 3rd story so much it balanced out those parts. (Apologies, I expect I was tired & cranky when I read this which made me pickier than normal).
There's heaps of imagination used for the stories, with some parts based on familiar stories which helped me enjoy them more. Oliver and Jumpy are lovable characters, travelling around experiencing so many normal and not so normal parts of life. There are laughs to be had, as well as some 'will they make it' moments. I like how some of the illustrations use lifelike images (eg food) that increased the reality of the scene without looking fake. The bright colours add to the book's appeal, as does the fact that there are so many more to read!
Story 43: Flying Carpet In this story a stork from Africa delivers a letter to Oliver. He is needed to rescue another princess. He and his friends travel to Africa where they are given a magic carpet to help them rescue the princess. They manage to do this, but the guards chase them. Can they evade the guards and take the Princess to her destination?
Story 44: Birthday Party Oliver returned home from one of his adventures to a surprise birthday party. His friends had cake and presents for him. He felt their love. What kind of presents do you think he got?
Story 45: Magic Berries In this story the three friends visit Ghost Castle again and end up in a land where there were very large berries. Before anyone could stop him, Joey ate a handful. He began to shrink. He found another colored berry and ate it. It caused him to grow fat. He found a third berry and ate it and it caused him to grow tall again, but remain fat. They were told they had to find a wood fairy to help them. Will Joey be able to do what is needed to get back to his regular size? I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Imagine cat and kangaroo traveling by trampoline, and you’ll have the flavor of these fun adventures, as a stork flies over the pyramids and a bright yellow bird looks on. A fast-flying adventure ensues with a magical carpet that “was very clever and did rise up between the clouds.” Then a wedding party ensues, soon followed, in the next tale, by a birthday party, and—what better?—free food!
As author Werner Stejskal’s Oliver and Jumpy series continues, bringing in images from different illustrators while sticking to the same general flavor, the kindle too has brought in new features, nicely explained on a bright front page for readers. For added value, the author sprinkles enjoyable, longer words in the text, inviting children to learn, while posing simple questions that invite them to think and observe. A nice take on a fairytales, the book teaches the well-known lessons—don’t disobey and don’t give in to temptation! Fun for all.
Disclosure: I bought it while it was free and still had some typos, presumably fixed by now.
Oliver and Jumpy Stories 43-45 by Werner Stejskal was amazing. The beautiful illustrations on every page went hand-in-hand with each story. The first short story held a magic carpet ride, a rescue mission to save a princess and a travel to Africa. Then then next short tale was about a surprised birthday party. Interesting animals helping to celebrate Oliver's birthday. The writer inserted a counting exercise to engage his readers. The last story, was about magic berries. Ones that if eaten, make one shrink in size, or fat, or too tall. Oliver and Jumpy had to ask a wood fairy for help. She led Oliver's friend onto a journey to eat a nut that would return him to normal. But he couldn't do anything before he found and tasted the special nut. A journey that looked easier than doing. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this engaging and exciting collection of bedtime stories. I highly recommend this book to readers everywhere.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Oliver and Jumpy go on three separate adventures- first, to pick up a princess on a magic carpet and take her to her prince. Next, Oliver received a surprise birthday party, with cake and whimsical presents, as well as play and fun. Finally, Joey ate unknown berries that caused him to change shape, and Oliver had to help him go back to normal.
Although I enjoyed the stories, sometimes the writing was a little bit confusing and/or difficult to read, for multiple reasons. The pictures were cute, but sometimes they were unclear, did not really make sense, or didn’t relate very well to the story. Overall, Oliver and Jumpy was just a quick, cute read, but not my favorite illustrated book ever.
Oliver and Jumpy are two best friends. Together with little Joey, they lead youngsters on great adventures. Story 43: Flying Carpet – this is a fun take on Aladdin, with a cat and kangaroos for heroes. Story 44: Birthday Party – focuses on the importance of friendship Story 45: Berry Magic – teaches the power of perseverance in the face of temptation in order to reach the goals that are most important These stories are perfect for readers who are in the age range of 6-8 years old. There are enough larger words to create a challenge for a child to stretch his or her vocabulary. And the absolutely magical pictures by Maycee Ann Reyes really make the stories a fun read. Highly recommended!
"Oliver and Jumpy - Stories 43-45" by Werner Stejskal is another wonderful group of short, children's stories about the adventures of Oliver the cat and his friend Jumpy kangaroo. Story 43: Flying carpet - takes the reader on an adventure, Story 44: Birthday Party - has the reader be a part of the birthday celebration, and Story 45: Magic Berries - gives the reader another lesson in magic. Perfect for parents to read to their younger children as each story can be a bedtime story or for enjoyment. Also, great for younger children who are in elementary school and like to read about adventures. The stories are just long enough, and fun enough to keep their attention.
This was an aright book. It is not my favorites book of the series, the stories seem really short and there is not much going on. The kids liked the book but thought the stories were short too. The first story is really over told. The birthday story was cute but could have had more of a story line to it. The last story was cute and had a good message. It is my kids favorite one from this book. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest unbiased review. This has not influenced my opinions on the book.
Oliver & Jumpy, Stories 43-45 has three more adventures for the cat and kangaroo team. In one story they ride a magic carpet to save a princess. In the next they have a birthday party with fairy dust as one of the presents. In the final story Jumpy gets in trouble eating magic berries and has to follow directions to get out of trouble. The three story allow children to use their imaginations, encourages problem solving and good behavior, plus they laugh all the way through them when I read them at story time.
Oliver and Jumpy are a wonderful and whimsical pair consisting of a kangaroo and a cat. They are a good read for children because the books often cleverly interject a moral or lesson in such a clever way that kids don't know they are getting a lesson. The stories are basic, but work for both older and younger children because older kids can read it on their own and younger children will enjoy having it read to them. The illustrations are always marvelous, colorful and beautifully drawn and are the perfect complement to the story.
I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
Oliver and Jumpy 43-45 by Werner Stejskal brings young readers more adventures of the elegant tom cat, Oliver, and his kangaroo companion, Jumpy, that are sure to delight. Oliver and Jumpy go on a magic carpet ride to save a princess, friends give Oliver a great birthday party, and magic berries create problems in three cute stories that can be read to youngsters, and that will teach while they entertain. Your young ones will like them.
Princesses, magic carpet rides, fairies, wishes, birthdays, cakes and lots and lots of foods and friends... What more could Oliver ask for? Pixie dust and magic berries perhaps? Whatever it is, my kids sure had lots of fun reading Oliver's latest adventure because it was all fun fun fun! Werner Stejskal just made my three kiddos happy because of Oliver, Jumpy and Joey and the whole of Silliandia. The pictures were awesome, too!
Oliver and Jumpy are at it again with three more exciting adventures. Oliver must rescue a princess in #43 on a magic carpet, celebrate his birthday with friends in #44, and Joey finds out that it is not a good idea to eat berries without his mother's permission in story #45.
These stories are engaging and help children use their imaginations as they travel along with Oliver and Jumpy. The author continues to create stories that are fun and full of adventures.
I love this series of children's books. It is a cat series similar to cartoons with adventures of handsome, elegant Oliver who loves to wear a tuxedo (he's a black and white cat, of course!). The 3 stories are Flying Carpet, Birthday Party, and Magic Berries. These are great bedtime stories you'll be reading over and over; they are loved by young kids. Enjoy them yourself, too! All these stories in this continuing series are real treasures!
WOW!! What a great set of three fun adventure with Oliver & ...
I enjoyed these three sweet and fun adventure stories with brilliantly colored pictures, For these reasons, I want to recommend it for five stars and for kids 1-6". I.received this ebook for free and in return here is my honest review. Super job Werner/Oliver! By Angela
And once again this author has given a full color illustrated story of Oliver and his doings. These are such cute stories that the young ones enjoy, at least our young ones do! Each book of it's own story line and well you never know what's going to happen! A great bedtime story!
Stejskal has created amazing children's stories with charismatic characters. Oliver and Jumpy are quite the duo. Together they are best friends and have a wonderful bond. Children will love the bright colors and stories.
Sweet, fun and funny. The more of these books I read the more I get to enjoy the humor in the stories. These are fun stories for parents to read at nighttime enjoying the animation with the story while spending valuable time with their wee ones.
