Deer shifter, Jason Fleetfoot, has turned his life around. After years of taking chances, he’s working as a crime lab technician, and he’s determined to forgo the risky behavior of his past. Then he meets Drew Danvers, the only undead detective in the city. Jason hates vampires, or does he? Drew defies all the stereotypes of his kind and something about him has taken hold of Jason and won’t let go. Jason might just dare to take a chance on a man others would label a risk to his health if not his very life.

3.45* Ok, first there is no sex on the hoof..I checked, there isn't. ;) Jason is a stag-shifter, I like shifters that aren't the regular wolf/lion/ etc so that was cool, he has been lusting after Drew for a while, but as opposed to a lot of books out there, there seems to be a bit of discrimination and unease of vampires. And yes you guessed it Drew is a vamp. After a lust demon gives them a push, a push as in inducing a huge sex crazed lust stagathon. There is some mystery and a small showdown, all in all a good short, but the 'love' was a little bit of a mystery, they aren't 'mates', that word is never mentioned :) but they don't really spend anytime out of bed together so I would have liked a few pages to see them together, not having sex, to buy the love between them, but that's a small niggle, it's a fun paranormal.
In an interesting variation of enemies-to-lovers, this is the story of two men falling in love despite their fundamental differences. How fundamental, you ask? Well, let me tell you that a more accurate label for what happens here is prey-and-hunter-to-lovers, and that will give you a feel for the enormity of the chasm deer shifter Jason and vampire Drew have to cross if they want to be together. Of course, the fact that they are also both human, kind of, helps them overcome what might be too big of a difference if they both gave in to their instincts.
Jason may be a deer shifter, but he certainly doesn't hold back and he knows what he wants. There is only one problem: he hates vampires. Not that it stops him from craving Drew, and when a lust demon causes a lockdown at the crime lab and leaves him and Drew in close quarters—any sort of caution and restraint on his side go out the window. What follows is an extremely hot encounter. Then he has to deal with the fact he is still attracted to Drew…
Drew has been lusting after Jason for months, but he is aware of the shifter's hatred of the undead. When Drew is the only one present during the lockdown, he takes the opportunity to slake Jason's lust – only to find there may be way more than physical attraction between them. But Drew's job is dangerous, and he has no intention of pulling Jason into any of the stuff he is working on. Except his arch enemy, the vampire who changed him against his will, has other ideas…
If you like prey-and-hunter-to-lovers stories or think you might, if a paranormal tale with evil villains and the excitement of the hunt are your thing, and if you're looking for a read that is as tension-filled as it is hot, then you will probably like this short story.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
Okay, I have to admit that I came away from this one with mixed feelings. Part of that is due to the style, as this book is told with alternating first person present POVs. I admit to it not being my favorite way to tell a story. And there were a couple of small moments where I wasn’t sure where I was, and it took me a few seconds to get reoriented. Overall it wasn’t too much of an issue though, and so it only dampened my enjoyment a slight amount. It’s a personal preference, and if it doesn’t bother you, then you certainly won’t have an issue with it.
Jason is a great character. He’s very self aware, and I loved that about him. He knew his limitations and his faults, and he also knew what he was good at. I liked being in his head, and found my time there a little more enjoyable. Drew was, for me, a little bit harder to like. Part of that stemmed from his attitude, but I also found him a little inconsistent. He was supposed to be a by the books kind of guy who did what he had to to stay on the force after he was turned, but he also went against every regulation by tracking the bad guy. I loved him when he was with Jason, and the way the two of them interacted, but I had a little trouble with him outside of the romance.
I think I’ve read this before. A vampire detective and a deer shifter lab tech is ringing an mm bell. Am going to read… * This book was previously titled ‘Sex on the Hoof’ and is by Silvia Violet. I gave it five stars when I first read it.
Jason is a deer shifter and Drew is a detective who also happens to be a vampire. They both have a attraction to one another but there was no way Jason a deer shifter would ever be with a vampire or at least that is what he thinks...
Wow I have to say I loved the way this author wrote this story and these characters. There was some action in this book and so much steam which was so damn hot... I loved the way she wrote these two men together!
This was a very short story and I really do not want to give away any spoilers so I will leave this review with... I 100% loved this story and would definitely recommend this Novella!
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
I loved this story! There were so many times when I found myself smiling while reading this book. The author manages to combine elements of fantasy and horror seamlessly, all the while telling about two men falling in love. Did I mention one of the men is a Stag-shifter and the other is a Vampire? Umm, not easy waters to navigate, but Silvia Violet does it with style.

I probably should have guessed from the title but this book had a lot of sex. I ended up skipping pages of it because that was how these two characters communicated, to be honest.
Aside from that, I liked the story. The characters are fun and interesting especially since you don't read many books with deer in them. Jason and Drew definitely have a connection that I enjoyed. The plot revolving around Drew's maker is a bit weak and fast. This story is also told in alternating first person POV which is not my favorite.
Overall, this was a quick, hot read. Recommended to those who are looking for some nice, intense smut.
This book was so much fun for me on a couple of levels. Imagine a buck and a vampire falling in love at one of the worst possible times resulting in the best of everything. Very romantic.
One of the reasons I jumped on this title when it became available was because it was about Jason. I’d met him in a previous installment of Protect and Serve when his sister, Natalie needed saving. Well, so did Jason, and this is his story after the fact. This adorable little gem stands alone just fine but since I’d read the previous book, I knew more about just how dire his situation had been and in this installment, just how far he’d come. I was so happy to find out he’d get his happy ever after but never imagined who it’d be with.
Jason knew he messed up before so he’s doing his darndest to make his sister proud and recoup some of his lost pride. I think the job the author matched him up with was perfect. I knew he was loyal and dedicated as well as a braniac. What I did not know was his aversion to vampires. How ironic that the one man who makes his blood sing and his dreams burn his inner eyelids from imagined passion would turn out to be a vampire. And yet, I really respected Jason because he didn’t cast generic aspersions or run around with a phobia so encompassing that he’d stake an innocent man, although a dead one. He remained professional and calm. That is until one of the bad guys threw a curve ball and presented Jason with a slight dilemma. That was yummy, in a twisted sort of way.
Drew is part of that dilemma. But he’s also Jason’s personal thorn and eventual salvation. Drew is more the tortured hero in this book. Once I found out about his background I felt a lot of emotion for him. I would have liked to have explored him a bit more because a man who can rise above the horror foisted upon him has to have an incredible inner core of steel and integrity. As it is, the author only allowed me a glimpse of his depths. The bane of a short story is the length of the tale.
Both men are strong and took turns telling their side in each chapter as first person point of view. At first, I was all excited about Jason, but Drew quickly engaged my interest. I credit that to being able to see into his head, by getting to see the taffy pull battering his emotions inside throughout the story. Sure, Jason has his share but it’s not the searing pain that Drew has to deal with. It was a great hook.
The dialogue is brisk and informative, the editing clean and the characters fun. The only drawback for me was the brevity of information. I could have used a bit more background on Drew, a bit more meat between scene changes and believe it or not, more loving words between Drew and Jason. Their bodies talked the loudest and the author certainly wrote scenes that pleased my fast beating little heart. I just wanted a tiny bit more emotional connection because then I truly would have been assured that Jason and Drew would be together, forever. Maybe Ms. Violet could have them get married? Ooh, I’d buy that book.
Protect and Serve: Sex on the Hoof is a delightful and cheeky romance between to unlikely men who end up happier than they thought possible. There was fun exploration and heartfelt skin on skin to appeal to erotic readers. To engage the senses for readers who need a bit of meat to their short stories, there’s a bit of action when Drew tried to chase down a bad guy. For me, the best is the closure that both brother and sister are safe, loved and have a bright and terrific future ahead of them. I’d love to visit with the deer shifters again; they were so cool!
Gripping, incredible, crime drama. This book grabbed me and held me to the edge of my chair from beginning to end. I sat voluntarily. Ropes were unnecessary.
The plot and the story are like a well played symphony or a perfectly balanced gourmet meal. Everything was so well written and harmonious. The story also made me feel like I was there. It was like watching one of those gripping movies when you're yelling at the characters and your jumping when something pops around the corner. When the vampires were running I could feel the wind rushing by my face and when Drew spoke in that certain way he does I could feel his stare and I wanted to flinch.
This story is also chock full of great surprises. It has a few things I have not read before in shifter or vampire books. For one, it has a main character working as a CSI. I watch CSI crime dramas myself, so this was really interesting for me to read it in a book. The other is, pairing a deer shifter with a vampire. That was a very curious pairing. Also, the concept of having a romance as well as a crime drama in one story made this a compelling read.
The ending - explosive. And short. What? I was expecting a fight, an exchange of heated words. What happened? This is the only part of the story that I had problems with.
All and all, I really loved this story, except for the ending. If you love shifter or vampire stories and/or crime dramas, I guarantee you'll love this story. Grab yourself a copy and start reading.
I received this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
I loved this book. . yes it was a short story but it didn't feel lacking or cut short. I'm not sure Drew is an appropriate name for a vampire but I guess since he was forcibly changed his parents didn't know to give him a cool vampire name. The sex between Drew and Jason was AMAZING and I'm actually jealous of fictional characters! I think the proof of a good author is being able to write sex scenes that are not only hot but is emotionally charged. I love when I can FEEL the emotional connection between the characters during the sex scenes. That's what makes it enjoyable to read. ..
I have to say I'm confused about this series though. so this is listed as number 8 in the series but this author isn't the author of all the books. And I noticed most of them were mf. I'm One of those ppl who has to read everything in order..
.I'm hoping this author will write more installments of this series bc it was surprisingly damn good!
Very cute story of a deer shifter with a fairly slutty past who falls in love with a vampire set on destroying the criminal who turned him. While the story is great, there was too much sex for the number of pages (I know, I know, TOO MUCH SEX? But there was!) The story is told in first person alternating POV, but the changes are clearly delineated, so it never got confusing. Jason turning into a 12 point stag, at work no less, made me smile, and he's a bad ass deer at that. Even with all that, the story is sweet (and I love his sister Natalie)
This is a sex fueled shifter/vampire book. One vampire looking for vengeance from the one who turned him. One deer shifter trying to resist the vampire but unable to. This novella is an entertaining read filled with fluffy dialog, sexy times, and a hunt. I have to say I really liked the whole demons, vampires, shifters, and other paranormal things walk amongst us and the world just accepts it. Well, they accept it as much as the human race accepts anything different. That was very clever. This quick read was filled with a lot and I had a lot of fun.
Silvia Violet doesn't know how to write a bad book.
This is a book that you won't be able to put down. Silvia Violet puts so much passion in her books, along with a strong deep love from the main characters that makes your heart beat just a little faster. This is another great beginning to what I'm hoping will be a nice long series.
Man, I am on a roll picking books that are written in present tense that I enjoy! (I usually hate it haha)
I really enjoyed this...loved the blend of paranormal with cops and crime. Jason and Drew had great chemistry and I enjoyed this. I do wish it was a bit longer, maybe more time on backstories, but this was a nice, sexy novella!
Ok paranormal short m/m romance about a deer shifter who works nights in the police crime lab and finally can't resist the sexy vampire detective he's been lusting after. The sex-to-story ratio is a bit skewed in this one...
Another sexy, fun, interesting, and way too hot addition to the series. The author is killing me here! My only complaint is I sure wish it were longer. Each of the books in this series could have been novels and I would've loved it!
I really liked this one, the deer shifter and Vampire were just so _______ together. It was a fun read and I would have given five stars if it were a bit longer and had less sex
Jason Fleetwood and his sister had made some bad decisions but are now both on the right track. His sister's boyfriend helped him get a job with the police department working nights as a crime lab technician. There he meets Detective Drew Danvers. Drew is the department's only vampire and Jason is not so sure whether or not he is fond of them, but Drew is getting to him. He finds himself wanting more and that want is returned.
It does not take long for the attraction sizzling between Jason and Drew to ignite. With a little inadvertant help, they find themselves unable to resist each other. Their chemistry is explosive and just about ignites the pages. The underlying plot is intriguing and drives the action for these two wonderful heroes. Silvia Violet knows how to write captivating tales as a means of showcasing wonderful heroes.
We meet characters that do not have a love of each other. Drew is the only vampire detective in town. When he meets Jason who is a shifter. Jason does not want anything to do with vampires and when he meets Drew the attraction sparks some heavy scene between them. Highly recommend this book, looking for a wonderful short story then this is the one
This was pretty good, but mostly just "okay". Not silvia's best work by a long shot. The story was interesting but not great. Same with the characters.
What disappointed me most i think was the world building. It was kinda just vomited on the page in narrative and it was jarring. Not looking for more in this series, but still do recommend this author.
I liked the idea behind the world building with supernatural beings open after political instability. I'd like to know more about that. The characters were entertaining enough, though I dislike the insta love trope.
This was sizzling hot with a really good storyline and characters. This is the second of this authors works that I’ve now read and I will certainly be getting more of them. Both books were excellent entertainment.
