Ember Standish and Jace Picard had their lives together planned before they graduated high school. But that was before he cheated on her. Ember went on with her life, and their paths never crossed again…until now.
Home for the Thanksgiving weekend, she’s dispatched to carry meds out to an injured hiker holed up in a hunting camp on the Prince River. Newly certified as a doctor, she plans to put her skills to work on that sprained ankle. Yet when she finds out who’s at the end of that long hike, it’s her heart that may be in need of repair…all over again.
When a storm blows in, she’s forced to stay the night. Jace, who has habitually hermited himself away during her holiday homecomings, can no longer dodge her. It soon becomes obvious that what happened that long-ago night is shrouded in more mystery than either of them knew.
Ember’s mission of mercy to a faceless hiker turns into a quest for answers with the one man she could never forget. The only thing they know for certain is that the long-buried passion between them is still there, just waiting for a spark.

Ember Standish and Jace Picard had their lives together planned before they graduated high school. But that was before he cheated on her.
Ok so there went that plan. Ember moved on and away from there and she made sure that they never ever were on the same street until now.
Home for the Thanksgiving weekend, she’s dispatched to carry meds out to an injured hiker holed up in a hunting camp on the Prince River.
Ember's now a doctor and she plans to be the upmost professional that she can be. She knew there was a possibility that he was the one needing medical attention. But one look at him and the feelings all come back, but then so does the betrayal of what he did.
When a storm blows in, she’s forced to stay the night. Jace, who has habitually hermited himself away during her holiday homecomings, can no longer dodge her.
Things are not always what they seem to be and there are explanations that Ember wouldn't listen to at the time that may have changed the course of both their lives. Is she willing to listen now? Is it too late to stoke the fires between them?
Ember's Fire is the second book in The Standish Clan series by Norah Wilson but can be read as a stand alone. This story runs parallel to the first book A Fall From Yesterday. This book centers around Ember and Jace who were high school sweethearts until a betrayal tore them apart. Ember ran away to school and became a doctor while Jace worked for his family and avoided Ember whenever she returned to town.
Ember was devastated by the betrayal she believes Jace perpetrated and has focused on her career. Jace doesn't remember what happened the night of his 19th birthday but he's heartsick over loosing Ember and the way she reacted when they broke up. He hasn't been able to get over her and so he's moved from one short term relationship to another. When Jace sprains his ankle in the woods and Ember is the one to hike out to help him the two are thrown together for the first time in 10 years. A storm hits and they are forced to spend the night in the cabin.
The first book sets Jace up to seem like the bad guy but you quickly realize all is not what it seems. Ember is a spirited woman with a temper that flares hot but thankfully for her Jace is patient and understanding. It was pretty easy to figure out who was responsible for the "misunderstanding" and so it was just a matter of waiting for the characters to figure it out. It was nice to see that they both were able to understand the rashness of being young and making the decisions they did.
This was a sweet romance with a wonderful hero. It was fun to go from thinking of Jace as the villain to liking him even more than Ember. I enjoyed this story and really look forward to finding out what happens with Scott. Of course, here's hoping there is a book about Ryker who is an intriguing character as well.
This book was gifted to me by the author in return for a fair review.
My Review: Second chance at love is one of my favorite tropes, and this is a good one just in that Jace and Ember never should have broken up. They were simply too young, too immature to handle the conflict that they were faced with ten years ago.
They haven't seen one another since that day until there's a call to Search and Rescue of a hiker with a sprained ankle that needs some supplies. Since Amber is a doctor and her brother has to go out on another rescue, she volunteers to hike in the supplies to the injured hiker, not knowing who he is. She isn't a happy camper when she comes face to face with the love of her life who cheated on her, but he's hurt and she can't ignore that.
As I look back on this story, there is a LOT of depth and action to this book. There is a lot going on...present day...the details of what REALLY happened ten years ago...and the complications added by both Jace and Ember's family situations. In the middle of all that is Jace's injury and a slew of bad weather and interesting hotels. ;) Just one of these things as a source of conflict would have made a great book, but the combination of all of them made the story riveting. Ember and Jace would sort out one tiny thing between them, but as a reader you know that there are still half a dozen other things waiting in the wings to sabotage them.
Literally, the book is nonstop action and events that had my heart skipping a beat. It's really obvious early on that neither one of these characters ever got over the loss they suffered ten years ago. Under the layers of hurt and pain, that love is still there. But they've been through so much, it's hard to see how they'll make their way out of this with a happily ever after.
I loved all the layers and different aspects to the story line. I didn't know how they were going to unravel all their issues completely, and that doubt kept me reading and praying that they would. Yes, I got completely caught up in these characters lives.
This is the second book in the Standish series. There's one more to go...Scott's. I've loved this family and the trials they're part of in this small community where prosperity is nonexistent and they are trying to strike a balance between jobs and saving their beautiful land. It will be interesting to see how the final story plays out. I can't wait.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Ember, the red-headed spitfire of the Standish clan, does not disappoint. She’s feisty! But, as one would expect, she’s a bit spirited and doesn’t exactly have an even temper. So, naturally, she’s quick to respond... whether it be to fly off the handle or across the country, lending her training as doctor to strangers in a car wreck or fiery passion.
Jace is pretty steadfast, lucky for her. He’s also quick witted, clever and despite a severely sprained ankle fast enough to catch Ember. He was her bestie and then male her teenage heart adored and waited to giver her virginity to.
Too bad neither of them was quite mature enough at 18 and 19 to stand the pressures of their age and circumstances. Their love wasn’t either, and they broke up. ...
Ember hightails out of their hometown right after her 18th birthday after receiving photos of Jace in his bed with another girl plastered all over him in compromising positions. And Jace, a step away from following her across the country to college, is reined in by his stepbrother, who shares that his perfect girl consoled herself and spited Jace in Terry’s arms the night before she fled.
In the intervening years, Ember finished college and went on to earn her medical degree. She’s poised to decide which of the choice positions offered to her she’ll take, but she’s leaning toward joining a pair of friend in a clinic in California.
Jace remained in the area, joining the family business lead by stepbro after their dad dies. But Terry has controlling majority, so he pulls rank. Jace is tasked with acquiring land in the area for one of his brother projects. The Standish farm that’s been in Ember’s family for two generations is the perfect location.
When Ember’s older brother Titus approaches him about buying the property so he can leave and join the RCMP, Jace has no choice but to move on it. But, the Standishs later learn of Terry’s plan to turn their organic farm into a site for a toxic waste dump after they’ve signed on the dotted line.
So, Titus calls siblings Ember and Scott home to join him and Arden for one last Thanksgiving, so he can tell them together, in person the property’s been sold and they have to vacate at the end of the month. Before he can give them the big news, however, he’s called to the mountain to locate a local girl and Ember’s dad sends her to Old Man Pickard’s cabin to help someone who has injured his ankle.
Instead of a stranded business man and stranger, Ember finds Jace. Despite a rather volatile beginning, what Arden has really given the pair is a second chance. They begin to realize maybe things didn’t go down the way they thought and follow the trail of crumbs to the truth. But, is this new start enough to overcome the land deal Ember has yet to learn about?
That’s what they have to figure out. Just as there were things in play neither Jace nor Ember knew about in their teens, machinations few know about are already actively engaged.
I really enjoyed Ember and Jace’s story, and look forward to reading about Scott in the third Standish Clan book. Thanks Norah for giving us just a tiny peak at who those elusive calls from Montreal (mentioned in Titus’s book, Fall From Yesterday) might be from. Have been tempted since the beginning to learn more about this aloof Standish.
And, oh my, could we please have more Ryker? Be still my heart — who could resist this gruff, caring mountain of a man. An amazing friend which such a BIG heart. Can’t help falling a little more each time I read about this Joe Manganiello ringer.
Ember Standish and Jace Picard are high school sweethearts, till one night changes all of that. Years have passed since then, when Ember finds herself face to face with Jace again. At first things aren’t looking good between them. While trying to make peace between themselves and the past, they realize there is more to what happened than even they know. So now they need to find the answers they are looking for so the past can be put to rest.
I am enjoying this series! The family dynamics are great. I love where Norah Wilson started off with this story. She has this one happening at the same time as the first, so it fills in the blanks of the time we don’t hear much from Ember in the first book. There is still a spark between Ember and Jace after all this time, that has my fingers crossed hoping they can find their way to be together again. This is a great story of reconciliation and family.
Received free through GoodReads first Reads - thank you.
Enjoyable rekindled romance between Ember and Jace who haven't seen each other for 10 years after a set-up which causes Ember to mistrust Jace and flee. A much better romance than I thought it was going to be, but irritated by Ember's lack of common sense when sent compromising photos of Jace through the post. She flees. Why not confront Jace? But then we'd have no book.
Her common sense returns 10 years later when, as a newly qualified doctor, she's dispatched to an injured hiker holed up in a hunting camp who turns out to be Jace. There's still a lot to talk through and sort out but Wilson has written this nicely, and it is a believable journey towards them getting together. Ember and Jace are likeable characters and I would read more by Wilson.
Norah Wilson’s Ember’s Fire rekindles the best elements of contemporary romance emotional tension, forgiveness, and second chances with the warmth and intimacy that defines her storytelling. The chemistry between Ember and Jace burns through every page, their shared history giving the story a deep, aching resonance.
What makes this novel stand out is its balance of vulnerability and strength. Wilson doesn’t just tell a story about rekindled love; she explores how time, regret, and personal growth transform what once was into something stronger and more enduring. The snowy, secluded setting heightens the sense of emotional isolation and rediscovery, allowing readers to experience every spark as Ember confronts her past and her heart.
Tender, passionate, and quietly powerful, Ember’s Fire is a moving testament to love’s resilience and to the healing that only forgiveness can bring.
Ember’s Fire has a timeline that runs parallel with book #1, A Fall from Yesterday. The Standish children were all called home by their oldest brother, Titus, for Thanksgiving. Ember thought that a little odd and knew something was probably amiss, but was glad to be home with her father and two brothers. As the blurb states, Ember was dispatched to carry meds to an injured hiker at a place she knew very well. It’s the very cabin where, as teenagers about to embark on college, she and Jace Picard were to cement their relationship. Only after she gathered what the injured hiker had requested did she learn the identity of the person she was to tend: Jace Pikard, whom she had not seen since that fateful night years before. The night that changed her life forever.
When Jace saw that it was Ember there to aid him, he was stunned beyond belief. After all, it was why he made his way to the cabin in the first place. He knew that Ember came home for most holidays and made it a point to get out of town to negate the chance of running into her. Yep, he hurt as bad as she did over what happened.
Ember treats her “patient” and tries to distance herself from the fact that it was Jace, failing miserably. As a storm blows in and she’s forced to stay the night, they have a real conversation about what happened all those years ago. When one revelation leads to another, a series of events unfolds that will leave them at a crossroads. Secrets are revealed that have Ember wanting to run, just like she did years ago. Jace is determined to prove to Ember that she can trust him again, but after being burned so badly, she has to decide if she does truly trust him, or if it’s truly over.
Ember’s Fire is a great addition to The Standish Clan storyline. Ember is a wonderfully developed character who the readers will instantly like. She’s fiercly loyal and has a very kind heart. Even though I was prepared to not really like Jace (based on the first book), he sneaked up on me. His determination to gain Ember’s trust, as well as do the right thing by her family, will have everyone firmly in his corner. Once you read the reasons for what happened all those years ago, your heart will break. For both of them. Ember’s Fire is ultimately a story of young love, betrayal and understanding that leads to full blown grown-up love and forgiveness. I have to say too, I have sooooooo enjoyed getting to know some of the dialect, phraseology and things in general about this Canadian region. This is such a fun, sweet and sexy read! The next book is for the third sibling, Scott and I can’t wait to dig in! Well done, Norah Wilson! Very well done!
Because of what I read in the first book of the series – Titus’ story – I was prepared to not like Jace and love Emma. I have to say I surprised myself and I loved Jace and had a hard time truly liking Emma. I’m glad they went on their journey to truly find out what happened in the past that changed the course of their future so dramatically. However, I also thought Emma was very selfish. Initially she questioned why her brother insisted that she and Scott come home. She also suspected something was wrong with her father. For all of her concern, she completely ignored her family’s calls and text messages to exclusively spend time with Jace. I thought there should be been a better balance with that. You are the adult. There is no reason to hide the fact that you are with Jace and communicate with your family at the same time. When she finds out about the sale of the land, she is upset that no one told her. Well, you have to communicate with your family first. I just thought she was selfish and immature. That takes nothing away from the story or the writing. I believe an author should have you feel strong emotions over the characters and that’s what she did. Great story and great writing. My question now is will Ryder get his own story????? I really liked him.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. When I read Book 1, I thought there would be more great stories down the line. Well, I just read Book 2 and it was fantastic. The very first thing that I felt when reading was that I needed to know what was happening to these characters. The stories have sucked me in – in the very best of ways! It’s a family that is close but as with all families, there are past hurts and mistakes that are not insurmountable but need to be dealt with and “fixed”. This story is about Ember Standish, the only daughter in the family – and yes, the “little sister” to her big brothers! – who is now a physician and all grown up. Yeah, try telling that to her brothers. She is off to an errand of mercy (which takes place concurrently with her brother Titus’ story in Book 1) and ends up with an old flame, Jace Picard. I won’t go into more detail as the discovery of their story is what makes it enjoyable. The author did an amazing job of characterization because there is one secondary character that I still want to slap upside the head and then ‘mother’ the main characters. Very enjoyable read and I am SO looking forward to the next book – I really, really need to know what happens (in this case) to Scott!
I'm a big fan of this family based trilogy that features three siblings in a small Canadian town who have a love of family, a love of the land and wonderful memories of the place they call home. Ember has studied hard to become a doctor, but she's still reeling from a betrayal that has haunted her for ten long years when she's dispatched to aid an injured resident in her community. When she and Jace are reunited after ten years they realize that forces unknown to them tore them apart. Ember is a brilliant, beautiful and feisty Doctor, dedicated to her career and still in love with Jace after all these years. Jace is a business man following in his father's footsteps but haunted by his past. I genuinely liked both characters and hoped they would find a way to be together, but Norah Wilson's well written and emotional storyline is brimming with secrets, lies and a new misunderstanding that could blow Ember's world apart. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This story runs parallel to this first book in the series A Fall From Yesterday. Although reading that book will enhance this story it can be read as standalone. Ember left home to become a Doctor after a devastating break with her high school sweetheart, Jace Jace can't even remember what happened that night and can't forget the girl he lost that night. But both were to young and immature to fight for each other. They have pretty much been avoiding each other for 10 years. When Jace sprains his ankle in the mountains, he holds up in family cabin. Ember is sent out to hike to the mountain to help him. A storm blows in and she is stuck there for the night. Things are not always what they seem. Can Jace and Ember find the truth and will they be able to find their way back to each other to love again? Jace still has a secret that could really mess up any hope of this. Can he earn her trust before she finds out or will old hurt overwhelm any chance?
I loved Ember and Jace. My heart broke for Ember and Jace and the events that caused them to miss out on so many years together. I would have loved to strangled Jace's step-brother for interfering in their young love. In the end they take a journey together to find out the truth about what happened that night so many years ago. Jace laid his heart out to Ember, but she was still running away when things got tough, until she realized what she was doing. Finally, she realized how much she loved Jace and just how far Jace would go to make her happy and to do the right thing.
Can't wait to get Scott's story and to see where his journey takes him on his road to happiness.
I really enjoyed this second book in the "Standish Clan" series. The main characters continue through this book, which I really like. After the first book (which was great) I wondered how Ember's story would continue and I was so pleased with how the book started through to the last page. Jace's character became so more more than I hoped for and Ember showed some real "grit" as she dealt with her trust issues and her career. I can't wait for the third and I think final book in the series although I think Arden needs his own story. I'm eager for the third book, yet don't want the series to end. A great series so far and I have thoroughly enjoyed both books. I highly recommend this series for those who like a romance with more substance to the story. by paytonpuppy
Loved this one! Ember Standish and Jace Picard were young high school loves who thought they would spend their lives together. Then one awful night changes everything. Now years later they are thrown together by meddling family and weather. Talking things out seems like the thing to do but as they do it becomes clear there was more to that night than they know. This story takes them on a journey to uncover all the secrets and truths of that fateful night. Along the way they might just find the way to forgiveness and new hope. A truly great story and I highly recommend it.
Thank you GoodReads for the book, and the chance to read a book by Nora Wilson a new author to me. Nora has written other books, but this one, Embers Fire, is the first one of hers that I have read. Ember is the only daughter of Arden Standish, and has two brothers who lookout for her. Ember as a teenager falls in love with Jace Picard. Something pulls them apart. Years later they meet again and that is where the story for me begins. This is the second book in the Standish Clan series, I have not read the first, but will be looking for it and book three as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and now I am rushing to go start the next book.
Ember and Jace's story happens at the same time as Titus and Ocean's story in book 1. Jace and Ember get a second chance at love, and I love stories like this where you know they are meant to be and their love never went away.
We meet a few quirky characters from this small area. The town and region Norah Wilson depicts in this series is just the type of place I would love to visit. I am so happy there will be a bunch of books in this series that will allow me to do that.
Great Book ... 4 1/2 ⭐️ Another great book by Norah Wilson. This book is the story of a second chance for Jace and Ember 10 years after their breakup. The characters come to life between the pages and are so down-to-earth, with an intriguing storyline. This storyline is one of heartbreak, forgiveness, and eternal love. The next book is about Scott, but I hope she continues the series with books about Arden and especially Ryker (Ember's friend). With a little bit of mystery, romance and laughter, I highly recommend this book!
LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!! This was such a wonderful story! The first book in this series was fantastic but I think this story may have been even better! The chemistry and angst and love between Ember and Jace just pulled me in to this book right from the beginning. I didn't want to put the book down but at the same time I just wanted the story to last, it was so wonderful! I received an ARC copy of this book for my review and I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! Such a GREAT story!
