The idea behind this book is lovely; a grandson and his grandfather (or 'Pop Pop') spend time together baking a cake. It's lovely to see the close grandson/grandfather relationship and I'm sure other grandchildren will be able to relate. The best bit about this book is the absolutely beautiful illustrations. There is not a single bit of white space on the page, making this an artwork in itself! Not only that, but the font is really bold, nice and large, and sans serif, which I think works well with the illustrations. I loved the sound effects throughout which complement the story, such as 'glop, glop', the sound of the butter going into the pan, and 'sizzle, sizzle', frying in the pan. Finally, there is a recipe at the end of a book for a lemon cake bake, so if reading the book whets your appetite, you can get stuck in!

This book is sure to warm your heart. It is an intimate cooking party between a grandfather and his beloved grandson. Written in rhyme the words dance across the pages as the duo peel, beat, twisk, pound, scrape, bake and prepare the little guy's favourite Lemon Bar Cake.

Grandfather is patience personified. He smiles, hugs and encourages (even when spills occur) and bakes the special cake to perfection. The book is a celebration of quality time spent together resulting in the fruits of their labour... biting into that delightful yummy dainty. It boasts making a memory that will last forever in the little boy's mind and heart with his amazing Pop Pop.

The water-based painted illustrations seem truly animated and they invite the reader to join in on the fun baking adventure. The author brilliantly includes a recipe for the Lemon Bar Cake on the inside back cover. I highly recommend this book.

This is almost a companion to the book Nana and Me by the same author, although I did not like this one as much. The young boy and his Pop Pop bake a cake together. The story is told in a rhyming fashion using sounds that could be fun to imitate together. A recipe for the lemon cake they make is at the back of the book.

The story is told in simple language for young children to understand. The watercolour illustrations add warmth to the story. The expressions on the faces of both Pop Pop and his grandson are priceless, they are so real. The emotions expressed are easy to see and relate to. What a wonderful story to use to prepare for a visit with grandparent or as a reminder of what great times children can have or have had with their grandparents. A nice addition to a family library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

We loved this book! The illustrations are beautifully done, and the child's happiness at spending the day cooking with Pop Pop can be felt as the story unfolds. This title uses onomatopoeia effortlessly. The short three letter words will be easily recognizable to early readers and lend themselves toward a phonetic reading approach. I would highly recommend this title.

I received an ARC in exchange for honest review.

A little boy has fun in the kitchen with his grandpa; they’re having a fantastic time, according to the drawings. Never realized there were so many things you could do with utensils and the ingredients themselves.
The best part is the rhymes, though some are forced. This is one of those books meant to be read out loud.
The artwork leans toward the magical, with seemingly every inch filled.
There’s a recipe at the end.

Adorable. This book screams to be read aloud. The sounds and the cadence are right on as Pop Pop and grandson make a cake. It includes a recipe in the back, but it stands at top with the story and illustrations.

Fun, fun!

The stories which rhyme are fun to read to my six month old. This story captivated him, had his attention once he noticed the words rhymed. With a few shoulder bounces, he thought it was a song!

This is a fun short story about a boy and his grandfather baking together. It's perfect for reading as a teacher with a young class, or as a parent (or grandparent) reading to their child.

Another delightful book by Irene Smalls, this one is about a grandchild and his grandfather, as they bake lemon bars. There is even the recipe in the back of the book, so you can make the bars yourself.

I love how they show all the steps, including tasting the batter, and licking the bowl. (Although, I know, I know, we shouldn't eat raw dough.

The whole book is a dance of movement as the child and his grandfather go about the steps of making the lemon bars.

Fun all the way through. A delightful addition to any library.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
