Rate this book
America's nanny offers a large dose of healthy parenting advice with secrets for raising happy, secure, and well-balanced babies and toddlers.
Babies don't come with instructions. And since today's parents are so overwhelmed with schedules and demands, they have little time to bone up on their parenting skills. Often removed from grandparents and relatives who in times past lived next door or just down the street, they have no one to guide them through the disorienting world of raising children. Enter Nanny to the Rescue! Michelle LaRowe, 2004 International Nanny Association "Nanny of the Year," gives her tried and true solutions to childcare. Her expertise with chapters titled "Who's the boss?" and "Discipline is not a four letter word" gives confidence to parents who need specific ideas for real day-to-day problems. A proud member of Christian Nannies, Michelle offers foundational truths sure to help encourge moms and dads.

Excellent, makes-sense advice for parents of young children.
My only criticism is that some of her "after" scenarios when her Nanny tactics are applied seem overly optimistic.
Although I'm open to trying her techniques, I highly doubt that a child would listen and agree with their parents all the time. Especially for this age group.

In that line of thought, her scenarios seem like they would bore a toddler. Would I go into that much detail to explain something to my toddler? I understand the premise of explaining things to children, getting their input, making sure there are no misunderstandings, etc.
But the amount of language she sometimes uses is overwhelming and, quite frankly, boring to me. I feel that it would be lost on a child of say 2 or 3 years old.

The best bits I took away from the book are:
1) Be consistent with your rules
2) There is a difference between discipline and punishment

Overall I liked the book but I feel that the author over-simplifies aspects of parenting. Even the best parents who do and say all the right things will have children who misbehave occassionally. This is a natural part of the child's growth. To suggest one method of dealing with a certain behavior and expecting it to work forever is rather naive. Obviously if a parent is strict and consistent during these temperamental spells they will be shorter periods of time and won't develop into habits. But the author never comes right out and says that.

I'll put this in the category of "Why did I spend time reading this when it didn't tell me anything new?" I've read a friend's copy of SuperNanny and seen a fwe blurbs from other nanny books, so I thought I'd try this to see if it could help me with my baby's sleep issues. Nope. Nothing stupid, offensive or repulsive here but nothing enlightening, engaging, or determinative either. So, don't waste your time. Unless you're really clueless, in which case you might benefit. Maybe.

This is a pretty good parenting book. I love the Super Nanny TV show and she details the same kind of techniques in this book. It is good because you don't have to read the entire thing to solve your problems.

Interestingly structured book with one scene at the start of each chapter demonstrating what not to do, and an alternate scene at the end of each chapter demonstrating a more successful approach. I didn't agree with everything here but got a few good ideas.
