When you spend some time in any Java programming community, you sooner or later come across the name Mala Gupta. So when she presented her newest book, the OCA Java SE 8 Programmer I Certification Guide I was of course very interested since Ms Gupta is so highly regarded in the community. The book exceeded my expectations. It is both a gentle intoduction to Java and a deep-dive at the same time. Ms Gupta presents the topics covered by the OCA exam in a fun and easy to understand way. The book packs a lot of information and a lot of fun, because Ms Gupta puts some humor in there as well. This makes the book a great reading experience and keeps you focused at the same time. It simply never gets to dry or boring. Mala Gupta also challenges the reader via exercises and direct questions so you can implement qwhat you have learned straight away or at least a few pages later. This makes the information stick better and stick it should because there is a lot of it. The book clocks in at several hundred pages (I have the kindle version) and you need some time to get through but once you are done and you have done all the exercises and answered all the questions you are ready for the final test of the book: A mock OCA exam and if you pass, you should have what it takes to pass the real one. The book is also great as a refresher for seasoned programmers who have been a bit too focsed on more specialized aspects of Java and simply want to get a basic overview again. All in all, I can only highly recommend this book.
I ordered an early access version of this book from Manning. So I could access the chapters as they were added by the author.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve basic Java programming skills and to prepare for the OCA Java SE 8 exam.
I liked the Twist in Tale sections in the book. Using this, I was amazed to notice how even very small changes to code, completely changed its output. I also liked the images used in the book. It gave me a much needed break from reading all text. Images also explained topics in a clear and concise manner.
The mock exam at the end of the book mentions the correct number of answer options for each question, the way it is in the exam. So it aligns better with the real exam, rather than throwing comparatively 'harder' questions at a reader.
Having passed the OCA examination after reading this book I can say that it is well structured and quite informative. You cannot fit all the use cases of the test but Mala Gupta has tried to put as much useful information as possible. The review of each section is a huge bonus if you want to quickly refresh the core knowledge of each exam topic. Even if you don’t want to get the certification the book offers you the basic level of Java required to seem proficient during the interviews.
Personally, I couldn’t focus much on the topic coverage in the book. I was more interested in the exam questions. I can confidently say that the book contains questions that are very close in difficulty to the actual exam, and the quality of the questions is quite good. By the way, since the book is prepared for Java 8, it only covers topics related to that version. As far as I know, the author doesn’t have an updated book for versions after Java 8. In summary, these are my thoughts on the book. Personally, I read it through O'Reilly. I hope this review has been helpful. Happy reading!

Very interesting book that covers all the objectives needed in order to successfully face the certification exams. It also makes you understand the common pitfalls which you may encounter in questions and explains the various options you may use, even if the may seem weird. Another important feature is the full mock exam at chapter 8, which may help the reader to deal with the question very similar to those of the real exam.
This the resource I'm going to use when trying to face the OCAJSE8-Programmer I exam.
