Just by happenstance, I listened to this book right after Time Bandit: Two Brothers, the Bering Sea, and One of the World's Deadliest Jobs. I was struck by how similar they were at the most basic level: stories about mens' experiences on large boats in dangerous waters, seeking a valuable commodity that people take for granted. In "Vikings", the year is 1922 and the quarry is seal pelts and oil. It is a writer's experience aboard the "Terra Nova" out of St. John's, Newfoundland.
Couldn't get through much of this one. I tried to listen to the audiobook and was even getting pretty good at deciphering the Scottish-like brogue, but you only need to hear about bashing in seals' brains so many times...
This book is not for the feint of heart. While the majority of the book is about the men on board the sealing ship. The accounts of the men are hard enough, but of course there is the expected slaughter of seals to really turn your stomach.
