Growing up in North West England and in Germany, Anna wrote plays about talking animals, and stories about naughty children, and drew on every available surface. After school, she did an Art Foundation course, then a degree in German Literature & Philosophy at Oxford University. In 1998 she found her perfect job at Usborne in London, writing about everything from curious penguins to trips to the Moon. Usborne.com
Squirt really liked seeing all the layers of things hidden under the ground. We had to stop reading to talk about traveling through the underground train, and how the water from the kitchen sink goes down the pipes into the ground...
A fun book about what goes on Underground! It has some non-fiction parts but for the most part it's a fiction/children's picture book. I like the pictures. I think younger children would love seeing the pictures of the ants, moles, trains and pipes underground. While I was reading this book, I thought about an ant farm. I think that would be good to have in the classroom for the children to have an idea about underground.
This book did an excellent job in teaching young children about what goes on under the ground. Since no one can see what goes on, children often question about it. Its amazing what all goes on, and by the colorful detailed pictures this book does a good job showing it. I recommend this book to all young children, for a fun learning experience.
Actually, this is fiction, but I would use it with the kids as a discussion opportunity that would focus on the science. One easily corrected problem would have been the "hungry creepy-crawlies munching through [plant roots]." Fortunately, most 'creepy-crawlies' do not munch on roots; otherwise, plants would be in major trouble.
this was read at library to special needs class. It is a bit hard to relate to australia, in that there were moles in there. Also, the kids were not convinced with the picture of the children coming out on the other side of the world ... trying to work out where?
