About the author

Bill James (born 1929) is a pseudonym of James Tucker, a Welsh novelist. He also writes under his own name and the pseudonyms David Craig and Judith Jones. He was a reporter with the Daily Mirror and various other newspapers after serving with the RAF He is married, with four children, and lives in South Wales.

The bulk of his output under the Bill James pseudonym is the Harpur and Iles series. Colin Harpur is a Detective Chief Inspector and Desmond Iles is the Assistant Chief Constable in an unnamed coastal city in southwestern England. Harpur and Iles are complemented by an evolving cast of other recurring characters on both sides of the law. The books are characterized by a grim humour and a bleak view of the relationship between the public, the police force and the criminal element. The first few are designated "A Detective Colin Harpur Novel" but as the series progressed they began to be published with the designation "A Harpur & Iles Mystery".

His best known work, written under the "David Craig" pseudonym and originally titled Whose Little Girl are You, is The Squeeze, which was turned into a film starring Stacy Keach, Edward Fox and David Hemmings. The fourth Harpur & Iles novel, Protection, was televised by the BBC in 1996 as Harpur & Iles, starring Aneirin Hughes as Harpur and Hywel Bennett as Iles.

L'amante della moglie dell'A.C.C. Desmond Iles viene trovato con la testa fracassata. Oliver il Compassionevole si trova senza un membro della banda. C'è una rapina da organizzare.

Consigliato a chi: piacciono i gialli e le storie scritte in modo scorrevole

Non sono un lettore appassionato di "gialli", ho poca sensibilità in merito e poche letture alle spalle. Certo, avendo letto Simenon, Izzo e Chandler uno si fa una determinata idea di quello che dev'essere per lui il "giallo" - se per forza bisogna creare generi e sottogeneri che servano da punti di appoggio. Avendo quindi letto poco in materia sono pieno di pregiudizi e certezze da quattro soldi. Per esempio, mi annoia quando un giallo è solo la complessità e la vittoria della trama ben costruita su tutto il resto. Trama che si riduce al trittico omicidio/sparizione-ricerca dell'assassino-punizione del medesimo. Trovo noioso quando il giallo scimmiotta l'hard boiled americano: abbiamo un altro sentire, un altro vissuto e un altro modo di vedere la vita e quindi di compiere delitti - e questo è forse il primo aspetto che rende Bill James, gallese, scrittore originale.

Seguito di "Confessione" il giallo in se � poca cosa, giallo d'ambiente, di dialoghi, situazioni e "humor" e "wit". Il "Club" � un luogo fisico, un bar per soci, � il cameratismo di protezione reciproca fra i poliziotti ed � anche il milieu, il demimonde e un certo numero d'altre parole straniere. C'� un omicidio, c'� l'organizzazione di una rapina e un certo numero di bravi borghesi che danno di matto, e di delinquenti ragionevoli e di piccoloborghesi irredimibili e feroci. Di fatto, il personaggio principale � una donna che ha a che fare solo indirettamente con tutto il plot. Ma � vero che ha a che fare solo indirettamente?
