Every Cedna is born to die, paying the balance that keeps magic alive.
One Cedna desires a different path, free from the pain that comes with the sacred duty.
As Gante faces destruction at the hands of Lethemian raiders, she fights against her fate as a ritual sacrifice.
Though dangers loom on every side, the Cedna travels south in a desperate diplomatic bid to protect the island.
Ethnic prejudices, old animosities, and a handsome stranger who pulls on her with a magical bond quickly overturn her plans, leading the Cedna on a world-shattering adventure of love, heartbreak, and war.
Every choice is final.
“Intense and riveting, The Cedna hits every point on the emotional spectrum. Deeply soul-moving. Street has woven another masterpiece.” –Tamara Shoemaker, author, Kindle the Flame and Mark of Four
Romance elements or not, I'm in love with this series. Each book in the Tales of Blood and Light is a different strand in the complex braid of subjective reality. The struggles of the individual characters reflect the struggles of the world as a whole. The more I read into it, the more impressed I am with the world crafted here.
I loved reading this and Gantean together. They fill in each other's spaces in more ways than narrative information. Where Gantean's protagonist was watery and, like her element, tended to let fate take her where it would, Cedna is pure fire, flickering willfully between adherence to duty and rebellion against it. Neither approach can be judged as "good" or "bad", just as the characters themselves resist such simple labels.
I had the pleasure of reading The Cedna before it's release. Like the first book in the series, The Gantean, The Cedna is an epic fantasy with a strong female protagonist. Street paints scenes of great power in lyrical prose. From the first page I was drawn immediately into this fantasy tour de force.
The Cedna is a fantastic follow up to the first book in this series. This story follows the Cedna, a mysterious figure from the first book, from her traumatic childhood to the climactic moments where her story crosses over with events from the Gantean. The prose is lyrical without wasting a word and the story full of surprising revelations. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to gain yet another perspective on the events of this world of courtly intrigue and magic!
The story unfolds into a bigger picture in Tale of Blood and Light Book Two. I liked this darker, denser story, told from The Cedna's point of view, even though this book is more tragedy than romance. Heavier than the first book, but leaves room for even more story expansion. I look forward to book three!
I received the third book in this series for free. In all honesty it is my favorite of the three faces of the same story. I find far too little worthwhile in the the first book primarily due to one particular character that is so insecure that his ridiculous possessiveness makes him entirely unsympathetic. Despite the cringworthy relationship the writing remains superb. I am very glad that I bought the other two books. The ending of this book left me in confusion and it felt a bit rushed in the final chapters.
