A collection of chilling ghost stories covering each county in England including the Haunting of the Theatre Royal in Bath, a time-slip in Yorkshire, a vampire in Cumbria and poltergeists in Lincolnshire. Illustrated.
Read some nice ghost stories here. But nothing too scary. I'm glad that this collection included ghost stories from every county in England, so that I could read stories about places I've been to, and haven't been. A lot of the stories are really old, and based in villages.
I found the one about the time slip in Royal Tunbridge Wells very interesting. Other stories I enjoyed was the one about the duck haunting a pub, the murder of a woman in a house, the 'thing that went bump in the night' in Somerset, the unexplained mystery of Zigmund Adamski's death.
I would recommend it if you like to read about haunting and the paranormal, pre-2001 era.
This was an entertaining read with some creepy and unnerving tales, many of which I'd never heard before even though I've read many books like this over the years. My favourite was about the story of Lucy Lightfoot, the Victorian girl who disappeared in the 1830s but was later discovered mentioned in chronicles of the Crusades. A time traveller?? It was an intriguing tale.... but a check on the internet revealed it was the invention of the vicar of the church where she 'vanished' and created to bring in visitors. Gutted!
Well, it took me 5 years to finish this one. When I bought it, years ago, I thought it would be scary, but funny and entertaining stories about ghost sightings in England. But it was much more scientific than I had expected. I think it therefore took me a while to finish it. I read a couple of stories and then put it down again for quite some time. Some stories were entertaining, but sometimes I felt the information didn't add anything to the story. I enjoyed reading it, but I'm not sure if I would recommend it. Perhaps only to someone of whom I know is really really into the supernatural.
An excellent book, which I found in a charity shop. Nicely set chapters based around English counties and the hauntings that have occurred over the years. A very good selection of true ghostly tales.
Quick trip around England in search of spooks and things that go bump in the night. Have to arrange to go on a ghost walk around Nottingham and I want to visit The trip to Jerusalem, love old buildings.
An enjoyable and easy to read compilation of varied and interesting spooky tales. A few I felt could have benefited from more in-depth exploration but generally a good choice for a light exploration of some of the Paranormal sites in England.
