At twenty-three, I'm left with a decision. The outcome could be life or death. Trent hit me once, and I cried. Then he hit me again. And again. After a while, I got used to it, as I slept on the floor beside his bed, night after night. Everyone told me to leave him, but I can't. He won't let me. The moment I wanted to give up on myself and any form of hope, Kemper-a tall, sexy Marine just home from Afghanistan walked into my bar. With one look in his eyes, I saw pain that mirrored my own. At first, I thought maybe he would be my prince charming, riding in to save me, but all it took was one tragedy for me to remember...fairy tales don't exist in real life.

Ravel hit me right in the heart. Anyone who has ever had their life touched by domestic violence knows that it is a huge thing to learn to trust once again after that sort of situation. Shari Ryan takes that situation and shows that delicate balance perfectly in this sweet romance.

Physical, Emotional, and Verbal Abuse mixed with Survivor’s Remorse with a little PTSD and all I can say is WOW!
I want to drown my thoughts. I need a change. I need to get away. I feel like I’m locked in a room with no windows or doors, no lights, and no chance of freedom. There’s only one way out...only one way. I lower myself to the floor of the tub and pull my knees into my chest, holding myself as the hot water streams down my back. My tears blend with the water from the shower and the heat does little to soothe the ache in my chest. Would they care if they knew how much I’m hurting everywhere? How many times can I tell myself I can’t do this anymore before I come to the point where I actually make a change? A scary, life-altering—ending—change. Sometimes I wonder if everyone would be happier if I were gone.
Daphne may only be twenty-three years old but she’s lived the life of a much older person. Growing up with feuding parents in a loveless marriage has given her a jaded outlook on relationships. So jaded that she’s spent the past few years with an abusive jerk that makes her sleep on the floor of his bedroom. She’s pretty much accepted that this is the best she’s going to get out of life until a lonely marine stumbles into her life. From the minute she lays eyes on Kemper, Daphne is drawn to him. Though Kemper himself is damaged and fighting his own demons, it’s through him that Daphne really starts to recognize her potential and see that there is more to life than and relationships than what she knows.
Kemper
“So yeah, man, I’m driving your truck because you can’t. Maybe you’ll climb out of that casket you’re in now and kick my ass. Huh? Why don’t you come kick my ass? Please, come and kick my ass. Why did you have to go and die on me, bro? Why?“ I choke back the tears that threaten to fall, then furiously grab a handful of rocks and chuck them one by one at the truck, trying to provoke the dead. But it doesn’t work. Nothing works. Nothing...nothing…nothing. “We were brothers, Rex! Brothers stick together. They don’t leave each other high and dry like this. Don’t you know that shit? Huh?”
Kemper has returned home from another tour, but this return is bittersweet. He has been estranged from his mother since enlisting, and has no other family other than his best friend Rex who didn’t survive this last tour. So while trying to adjust to home life Kemper is also dealing with the loss of his friend as well as the guilt that he couldn’t save his best friend’s life.
Kemper, doesn’t necessarily deal with his issues head on, instead he uses Daphne as a distraction.
The second he feels my touch he falls to his knees and drops his head between his legs. His hands fold around the back of his neck and his entire body convulses. I almost let it all go too because I can’t handle it when someone is in this much pain, but I hold my breath, trying to keep back my selfish tears as I kneel beside him, wrapping my arm around his back. “Hey. It’s okay,” I say softly. “It’s okay.” “It’s not fucking okay,” he cries. The broken sound in his voice tears my insides out, “he’s gone and he ain’t coming back, Daphne. I can’t handle this. I can’t.”
But while Daphne serves as a distraction from his issues, she is a major attraction for him. Unfortunately for him, Daphne belongs to another man and he refuses to move on a woman who belongs to someone else; even if that someone else is an abusive bastard. When Daphne makes the decision to leave the abusive Trent, Kemper is still hesitant to become involved with her due to the baggage he carries.
I’m such a chicken when it comes to books that address issues like domestic abuse; I guess it’s that whole “I want to be in La-la land” thing. I think I feel like if I read about topics like this it will kill the vibe. When I read the synopsis, in my head, I’d decided to pass but something thing made me say yes. I’m glad I did. While it was tough it was so worth it. From the moment Daphne and Kemper encounter each other they clicked. There was just something about them where you knew “Yep, these two were destined to meet.” While Daphne and Kemper both try to fight their attraction to each other a friendship develops between the two of them.
Daphne was such strong soul but it amazed me how she didn’t know it. She was educated, she was capable, and to some extent she was resilient; but the absence of encouragement in her life kept her from reaching her full potential and more or less sentenced her to a life with someone like Trent. The weird thing about Daphne, other than her family, she seemed to attract people who wanted to be there for her…even strangers. Like the time when Trent showed up in the bar and attacked her…
As soon as the first guy is out of earshot, another one, an older looking Marine from the crowd walks up to Kemper’s side. “Look, hon, we don’t tolerate that kind of stuff. You ever need anything, you let Kemp here know.” He pats Kemper on the back and squeezes his shoulder. “We all have your back. Consider us your brothers.”
Daphne and Kemper’s relationship was definitely something different than what I’m used to reading. Can’t quite put my finger on what made them different but different it was. It was a sort of an “I’m there for you but won’t push” and the whole “I can’t show you how much I want you but God I want you” type of relationship. Even when each of them sees the other at their worst, the still come back to one another.
“Is this the first time he’s hit you?” Kemper’s brows are bowed toward his nose while his thumb continues to trace small circles around my cheek. I’d rather lean into his hand than respond. In truth, I just don’t want to answer him, but he’s still staring at me, waiting for a response. I look down, away from his gaze. The ache in my chest, mixed with feeling like a weak woman, makes me want to cry, but I won’t cry in front of all these people. His finger curls under my chin and he tilts my face back up to look at him. His eyes are kind and caring, yet pained at the same time. The light is hitting them at the perfect angle, giving them the slightest shimmer in the center of each pupil. Then there are his lips—I can’t stop looking at those either. They’re full and capable.
Both seem to have issues with their parents. Kemper’s dad died when he was too you to really remember him but he to connect with him, Kemper follows in his dad footsteps and enlists. I was a little confused at his attitude towards him mom. While she may not have been somewhat emotionally unavailable to him she wasn’t abusive towards him. He continued to support her financially the entire time he serves but he doesn’t see her. I definitely understand Daphne’s attitude towards her mother I feel like she could have given her dad a bit of a break. Especially when he’s sees that Trent has hit Daphne.
For me it was strange how she could so easily cut him off because of her anger but she couldn’t do the same with Trent. I think he really wanted to do right by her but just wasn’t sure how to go about doing it.
I’m not doing this story any justice, all I can say is it’s really worth reading. It’s definitely an emotional read…didn’t bring me to tears but it definitely made my heart ache at times. Oh and aside from their attraction to each other, Kemper and Daphne find that they are linked to each other in the most unusual way.

5*** Charming stars from me
What a sweet story with so many messages. Some people have been through or actually living right now situations like Daphne and Kemper have. Abuse (physical, mental) and participating at war as marine or soldier etc been through the cruelty of seeing death, blood or even loosing a loved one or a brother at arms.
The reality sometimes is devastating and i think this story gives hints of it (even though it's fiction).

Daphne has been suffering in the hands of an abusive boyfriend Trent (no words about him..I just HATE him).
The whole thing can be described by many words, at first i was sad and angry about her i mean 'My sweet girl why??
Leave this poor excuse of a man this instant.. Why are you letting so many years pass from your life while you treated like this?? You deserve more from life..'
But i saw her evolving and i admired her courage at last to stand up him and make the right choices because to tell the truth you can't feel or understand her or every person that suffered from abuse. Yes i might say speak up and go but maybe it's something easy so i feel proud of her and her actions. She is a sweet and caring person with a hidden strong will inside her.
Kemper on the other hand has suffered the cruelty of a war who also lost his beloved friend. To begin with i can't even imagine what he's been through or what his eyes have seen (war is a sensitive subject). We can see his character after war, even through he is a "wounded" man who struggles mentally to come back to reality beyond war, he is a strong person who too has strong will and "fights". I couldn't write without mentioning his caring side, the way he took action with Daphne it's it's very admiring.

Significant mixture, fast plot and characters with great chemistry. A really worth reading story, i absolutely recommend it and i can't wait to see what is next from the author.

I was in the mood for an emotional journey when I picked Ravel up. Judging from the blurb, I thought that this would be the perfect book to fit my needs. I was about a third of the way through the book and I thought that Ravel might make me actually ugly cry. But unfortunately, it didn't. "Unfortunately, it didn't" was kind of the whole theme for me with this book.
Unfortunately, it didn't help the flow of the book when the story keeps getting broken up by flashbacks. Granted, the flashbacks are completely necessary with how the author was writing this book. I saw the need for them but they just didn't always help the story. It felt like they sometimes took something away from what was going on currently with the characters. Personally, when I pick up a book, I want to be able to lose myself in it. I don't want to have the chance for issues/concerns and all of that from my life to interfere with what is happening with the story. But that is a little inevitable when you're having to check at the beginning of each chapter to see:
a.) Whom the chapter is about
2.) When the hell the chapter is taking place and
d.) remember what in the hell happened with that last time-period/character.
It's just too damn much to have to keep up with especially with how deep this story goes. I don't know ... the flashbacks just stilted the story and it irritated me. Maybe it irritated me more than it should have because I was so excited to read it and then for the start-stop action to be going on with the story like I'm in a freaking car with a student driver who is a little heavy on the pedals.
Unfortunately, it didn't help the storyline for things to move so very slowly within the story. I can almost see why it was so slow because of what Daphne was going through but at the same time, I found myself skipping sentences just so that I could get to a part when something was happening. Anything. I just wanted to light a fire under the story's ass to make it get a move on. The slow moving story coupled with the flashbacks made this book seem quite a bit longer than it actually was. And not in a good way.
Unfortunately, it didn't help my overall feeling of the book when the ending lit up and then fizzled out like a match getting rained on. There was a point when I thought that the story would really redeem itself and the suspense was building and I was shifting in my seat, getting antsy for what was to come only to have things drop off and the scene just end. Also, irritating.
As much as I wanted to like this book, it just didn't like me back. I don't know ... maybe I'll pick up another one of Ryan's books in the future but maybe I won't. I don't think that her writing style and my reading likes are on the same wavelength. Unfortunately.

I am a huge fan of Shari Ryan's writing, so I was very excited to be able to read and review her latest creation. Once again, she rocked it!
When Daphne first met Trent, she thought he was a pretty good guy, As time went on, she soon realized that he was a monster. Like many women, Daphne found herself in an abusive situation, and she felt trapped. She knew if she left him, he would kill her, so she stayed. As a result, she ending up losing herself. However, her outlook on life and love changed the day a tortured marine showed up at the bar she worked at.
Kemper just returned home from Afghanistan where he watched his best friend die. He goes to a local bar with a group of his fellow marines to try and forget if only for a while. When he first sees the sexy and beautiful bartender, he feels an instant connection to her. Fearing Trent's reaction, Daphne tries her best to resist Kemper's charms. As they spend more time together, they each realize that neither one of them can deny the connection that they share. Can their love survive two crazy ex lovers and a dangerous deployment or will these obstacles prove to be too much for them to overcome?
This is a great and heartwarming love story. However, this book does deal with the topic of domestic abuse, so if that is a trigger for you, this might not be the book for you. In my opinion, Shari Ryan did a fabulous job at shining the spotlight on this serious issue! This is a book that I would highly recommend!

Publisher synopsis: At twenty-three, I’m left with a decision. The outcome could be life or death.
Trent hit me once, and I cried. Then he hit me again. And again. After a while, I got used to it, as I slept on the floor beside his bed, night after night. Everyone told me to leave him, but I can't. He won't let me.
The moment I wanted to give up on myself and any form of hope, Kemper—a tall, sexy Marine just home from Afghanistan walked into my bar. With one look in his eyes, I saw pain that mirrored my own.
At first, I thought maybe he would be my prince charming, riding in to save me, but all it took was one tragedy for me to remember…fairy tales don’t exist in real life.
This book stumped me. I really wanted to be in Daphne's corner, but she kind of angered me. She was waiting for a knight in shining armor. I realize it is hard to live in one of these situations or leave one, but she had strength inside of her. Also, I don't see what is wrong about Kemper wanting to marry her and protect her, why the had to go through the "dating process" after marriage. All in all, this novel did keep me turning the pages. I was invested, I just didn't feel as connected to the characters as I wanted to. And I am glad Daphne's character gained strength through the book.
** This book contains domestic violence.
** This book contains descriptive romance scenes.

Writing: great
Sex: yes
Violence: yes (rape, assault and war violence)
Narration: multiple
Rating: 5 stars!
I don't know what it is about Shari J Ryans books but they are instant book crack for me. I seriously didn't want to put this down and stayed up super late finishing it because I HAD to know
How it ended. The writing is so good that you seriously get sucked in. There is some violence in this one and it does deal with some domestic violence issues. I will say that it I am pretty sensitive to that stuff and felt like it wasn't so graphic I couldn't handle it. So kudos to
The author for Getting her point across with out making my overactive imagination go crazy. Anyway I love her books. This is my 2nd review for
This author and I have seriously devoured both books!

*Disclaimer* I was an advanced reader of this novel. I was lucky enough o read it as it was brought to life. Also helped with some of the content. (A very small help but I want to be honest here.) That in NO way has influenced my opinion or review of this novel. RAVEL earned 5 stars and that is what it is getting!
I am a huge Shari J Ryan fan. Not gonna try to hide that. Her books speak to you in a way that others just don't. Ravel being a Military romance was right up my alley. Add in the suspense and yes, even the abuse I was in head first. I LOVED this novel. Daphne needed a good shake a few times. But in that note so did Kemper. Stubborn ass people. And Trent.. oh don;t even get me started on that twatwaffle. He is a mole on the ass of a troll.
Now, to the fun part. Here we go...
Daphne, Daphne.. Daphne. The poor girl is as backwards as a bird with no tail feathers. Her mind plays with her and her heart.. it’s so broke at first that she is in a place in life that she is just lost. Trent, the douche extraordinaire, is a vile piece of squirrel shit deserves so many ass whoopin's. Men like him (cause as we all know they're everywhere), the ones that think they can boss someone around need a swift kick to the nuts but without that they make your life hell.
Daphne's home life was not so good. Her parents are a special kind of crazy as it is. They've also helped to make her mind a place that she thinks it's okay to be treated like a dog. They need a swift kick in the pants too. They set a line in the sand that Daphne doesn't know it's okay to cross. So when Daphne meets Kemper and feelings start to come out to play, her mind tries to focus they way it had. Now though, she may have a chance.
Kemper, poor heartbroken, sad, Marine who is grieving the loss of his brother in arms at the bar were Daphne works. It's her moment of kindness that brings him back to the land of the living. So to speak. As the bond that sparks starts to grow both Kemper and Daphne try to fight it but then with Kemper giving in he makes a decision to be her friend. One bar fight later Kemper is sweeping her off the ground and vowing to keep her safe. That's something he can do.
It takes some time but finally Daphne starts to get a clue. She has Kemper by her side to keep her safe and it's a routine of growing love, safety and mutual respect that keeps her with him. Kemper, knowing just the kind of arserocket Trent is does the one thing guarantees to keep her away from him. He takes her on base. Then when the orders come in for him to go back to war it's just Daphne, her work and the worry everyone feels in those times. But as always... life throws a wrench in things.
Kemper is injured, Trent's on base and things keep going down hill for Daphne until she finally puts things right. She decides she is worth fighting for and lays into Trent with the help of something special.
In the end it worked out as it should. Daphne knows what love is, Kemper has a future outside of the black abyss we call war and Trent... the sniveling little bastard gets what he deserves.

The Man in the Moon will keep you together
One word just keeps popping in my head, "WOW". I am on sensory overload right now.
Let me issue a warning. If you have triggers, this may not be for you.
Shari does an incredible job of describing the life of abuse. The depravity that Daphne lives with is something people think can only happen in movies and books. Abuse is real, it is nasty, debilitating, degrading, and worst of all, something you think you have to life with. This is not a tail of bunnies and fluff.
Kemper is amazing. Kemper is a hero. I can vividly picture him in my head. If only every abused person could find a Kemper.
This is a story of pain, a story of life, a story of recovery. It will pick you up, throw you around, and gently place you back on your feet.
Marvelous! Absolutely marvelous!

This book is an emotional read, it describes an abuse that is very real and something that you can relate to.
Shari has taken a subject and wrote a beautiful story. We meet Daphne who is stuck in a relationship and fears there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Having to lie when she is working to protect herself from the monster she is living with. Little does she know there is light at the end of the tunnel and a saviour waiting for her.
Kemper is a man that has just returned from another tour in Afghanistan, but has not returned with his best friend this time around. He has a hard time dealing with this loss, but meets a woman that changes all this for him.
This is a heart pulling story, that as I said before is beautifully told and written.
I will be looking forward to reading more books by Shari

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Every once in a while to a readers delight you open a book, read the Prologue, and know this book is going to affect you in some way. I'm not one to judge a book by the cover, and generally in reviews I don't mention the cover. However, I fell in love with Ravel's cover. It's absolutely beautiful and I could see so vividly the cover models as the characters. Between the beautiful cover and the Prologue I knew I had found a book that I'd devour.
Daphne first met Trent on summer break from college and they started dating. Daphne's never had a good example of what a relationship looks like because her parents can not stand each other. They fight all the time. Before her senior year of college Trent changes and turns into the most horribly terrifying person. Thus begins years of abuse and threats of death if she leaves him. She's terrified. Who wouldn't be? Daphne loses herself due to this relationship, but still holds out hope for something better.
Kemper is a Marine who shows up one night at the bar Daphne works at. He's so hurt and lost and grieving his best friends death while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Daphne makes a toast to his deceased friend Rex and a friendship is born. They bond quickly, are supportive of one another, and instantly attracted to each other. Is Kemper just who Daphne needs in her life to finally see her relationship for what is is? Can Daphne help Kemper to grieve and find peace in this world? Can their love survive with so many odds stacked against them?
I devoured this book. I just could not seem to put it down. When I had to I couldn't stop thinking about the story. The story of Kemper and Daphne is both heartbreaking and beautiful. I loved both these characters with all my heart. They both have had such rough lives yet still somehow they find the beauty in moments. I'll never look at the man in the moon the same way again. I'll forever think of Kemper and Daphne when I do. Their story is one that grabbed my heart and didn't let go. I rooted for them. I cried several times for both of them. I wanted to have a little talk with Trent with a baseball bat. I've never despised a character like I did him. It may sound odd to say a book about an abusive relationship and a lost Marine is beautiful but I promise you it is. Shari J Ryan has done the most amazing job with such a difficult topic. Such a good job in fact you'll swear your there with Kemper and Daphne.
Don't miss this book. Shari J Ryan has you in a place of comfort then BAM rips it right out from under you.

World Building: This novel takes place in North Carolina. There are a few scenes were Kemper is overseas but the story usually stays in North Carolina.
Characters: The main characters in this novel were Daphne and Kemper. Daphne has drawn a rough set of cards in her life. Her relationship with Trent was something she could never get out of no matter how hard she tried. And with each minute she stayed with him, so called friends abandoned her left and right. Not to mention her will to actually break away, dwindled as well. Until she met someone with the same pain in their eyes, that graced her own. Kemper was a balm that soothed her aching and broken spirit but can they be more? Or will Kemper bow out like everyone before him? Kemper has just come back from a deployment that turned his life upside down. But even though the worst happened to him overseas, in North Carolina he might just find his salvation. Daphne is not like anyone he has ever met before but the only problem is that she’s taken. Never been one to poach another’s girl, only Kemper can’t ignore the feeling she inspires in him or the pain he sees reflected in her eyes. Can he be her savior? Or will he move on before either one of them can get too attached?
Plot: This was a pretty intense new adult story. While the romance arc was on and off sweet and light, the rest of the story was dark and somewhat uncomfortable to read during certain scenes. The author does specify that there is domestic abuse throughout the story and if you are sensitive to those types of things I would recommend you NOT read this story.
Writing: This novel was told in first person points of view of both Daphne and Kemper. As well as past and present point of view.
Curb Appeal: The cover is just so sweet looking and definitely caught my eye while I was browsing stories! The blurb on the other hand just hurt my heart. As intense and sad the blurb seemed it also really intrigued me. I was already entranced with the story before I even started the first page!
Ultimately: This new adult story was a lot deeper and heart wrenching than I expected it to be. The characters felt real and raw and the story took me on a roller coaster ride. All in all if you are in the mood for a heroine that finds the strength to make a better life for herself and a hero that would do anything for his girl then come check out Ravel!

***I received a copy of the book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review***
This book is a very thought provoking one as it deals with domestic violence and you want to question why Daphne stayed with Trent for three years? As you read through the book, you understand how scared she was and the fact her parents never helped her out because of their own issues, then you know why she did. Then by the end of the book, you are cheering how she dealt with Travis and that he won't be abusive ever again to another woman. (Yay, Daphne!)
The night everything comes to a head, Kemper, a soldier on leave who is dealing with the loss of his best friend,Rex, who died on their last deployment. But he saves her and makes sure she gets medical care. But can they make it as a couple? They have quite a few obstacles to overcome but both Kemper and Daphne soon fall in love. When he receives notice that he'll be deployed back to Afghanistan, Kemper and Daphne decide to get married before he has to leave.
Daphne soon finds a friend with her next door neighbor, Jennifer, whose husband is deployed (but not in the same unit), plus a new job at the base's commissary. But when Trent shows up at her work, now a Marine, things start to fall apart. He continues to harass her, even finding out where she lives but when Kemper suddenly quits communicating with her things come to a head quickly and Daphne needs to deal with Trent quickly because she even alienating Jennifer in the process.
When Kemper is injured during an ambush, they both must overcome their own fears so that they can prove to themselves that love can heal everything.
I LOVED this book and if you can get past the domestic violence, it is well worth reading.

I was given an advanced copy of this book in return for a fair review.
Wow! I just could not put this book down or get Daphne and Kemper out of my head. Daphne is in a horrible abusive relationship. I kept finding myself wanting to shake her and snap her out of her feelings of self-worthlessness -and scream at her to leave! (I am close to someone that has been through a similar situation in life - and the writing felt all so real - It reminded me of how I felt when my friend was going through these similar situations. Reading Daphne's feelings in Ravel helped me understand a little more of what my friend was going through - how scared she was - and why she just wouldn't end things herself.) Then she meets Kemper - a sexy, swoon-worthy, heart-broken marine - who is just home from deployment. All he wants is to help Daphne and save her from this awful relationship. Daphne feels bad for everything that Kemper is going through and wants to help him get through it - even if it means that she'll be hurt by her controlling boyfriend. Kepmer and Daphne overcome so many obstacles together and create a love so strong that it seems nothing can break them apart. Kemper is Daphne's Fairy Tale come true - but in the end, I was happy to see what a strong and confident woman Daphne had turned into.
Overall, I thought that Shari did an excellent job of portraying the feelings of an abuse victim. I loved that Kemper helped Daphne see how special she is - but in the end - Daphne is the real hero. Kemper and Daphne have an amazing love story that you won't soon forget - this is a must read!

*** On behalf of I Love Story Time, review by Juls ***
4 stars!
"From experience, I know that life is cruel and dark, full of hate and pain. I’ve convinced myself that the fairy tales I once believed are merely stories written for innocent children who aren’t ready to be exposed to the cold realities of life."
Ravel is a story that I really didn't expect. From the blurb, I knew I was reading Daphne's story about her abusive relationship and the difficult choices that she would have to make. However, I got so much more! I was drawn to this story just by the synopsis, but I was captivated by the story line and the characters. I felt so bad for the situation Daphne found herself in when it came to Trent. I just couldn't figure out why she lived through that for so long. Then when she finally decided that she has had enough and is willing to move on, I was glad she finally had the courage to do so. It didn't hurt that she had the help of a sexy Marine named, Kemper. Kemper was her knight in shinning armor. Kemper was a great guy. He was willing to be there for Daphne when she needed him most. More importantly, he was willing to show Daphne what true love is all about. I enjoyed their story and liked that this wasn't only about an abusive relationship, or the Marine coming to the rescue, it also gave us a glimpse of what being in a relationship with someone in the military is all about. This is a great story, and I would recommend it to my fellow readers!

Daphne is currently in a relationship in which she cannot walk away because she fears for her safety, and the safety of those around her. Kemp has just returned from his latest deployment is sitting alone at the bar while all his fellow soldiers are celebrating their homecoming. Daphne sparks up a conversation which, in turn, sparks a friendship that has the potential to be so much more. However, they are both in complicated relationships that prevent them from moving beyond the friendship stage. Will Kemp be able to accept his girlfriend's explanation of why she stopped writing and wasn't there to greet him when he returned? Will Daphne be able to see her own worth and walk away from an abusive relationship? Will Daphne and Kemp ever get their happy ending, or will their exes make sure that never happens?
This story was emotional and heartbreaking, while also being empowering and heart mending. There were times when I laughed at the banter between Daphne and Kemp, only to cry moments later at the heartbreak and abuse endured by Daphne at the hands of those who "love"her. I usually shy away from reading books that have anything to do with domestic violence, but I am so glad that I gave this book a chance. It was an amazing read and I am already looking forward to reading another book by Shari J Ryan!

I received an ARC from author in exchange for an honest review!
This is my favorite book by Shari J. Ryan to date. This book gave me all the feels. It made me angry, it made me cry, it made me smile. ****This book may contain triggers from some readers****
This book takes you into the world of Domestic Violence and War
This is the story of Daphne. She is stuck in an abusive relationship with a man named Trent. He is the devils spawn in my opinion. Her family parents fight all the time. She has no out. She is living with Trent ( well kind of) She isn't allowed to sleep in his bed. She wants to leave Trent but doesn't see a way out.
Kemper is a solider who is just returned home from war, he is sitting in the bar that Daphne works at. There is a whole bunch of marines in the bar since they all just got back, but he isn't in the mood to be celebrating. He is having a rough time being home from the war, and missing a huge piece of himself.
This story is heartbreaking, there is ups and downs. You will shed many tears while reading this story. I loved every moment of this book because it made me feel so much. Shari has out done herself with this story!
Please if you are a victim of DV know that there is help out there! You are not alone!

Daphne is at the bar alone that is full of Marines and she knows that Trent is going to have a fit about it. When she sees a Marine with his head down she decides that she is going to go talk to him. She finds out that he lost his brother overseas. Daphne decided that she is going to have a drink with him to honor his brother. Kemper was surprised when she toasted his brother. When he sees that she is behind and the only one that is working that he is going to help her out. Trent decides that he is going to go to the bar to see Daphne he is very furious to find out that she lied to him, what he doesn't expect is that Marines are going to protect her.
Daphne has been trying to leave Trent for the past three years. She writes in her journal everyday. she is 23 years old and she loves to figure skate. Kemper is a Marine, he is very loyal, caring and nice. He wants to help Daphne. Jacey runs the bar, she hates to see Daphne hurting. Trent is abusive, drunk, a drug addict. Doesn't care about anyone but himself. Jesse owns the rink that Daphne goes to to skate.
This is my first book by Shari J Ryan and I can honestly say that it will not be my last. This book is very well written and the characters are very well developed. I felt very connected to the characters.

This book is so much more than I expected! It is a sweet, suspenseful, true romantic story. There's no explicit sex scenes which makes me want to recommend this book to everyone who loves a good romance story. The story line is strong and there a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I love all the feels this book gave me right down to all the tears I cried. There is a small amount of violence but nothing too descriptive or gory.
Daphne and Kemper's story is definitely one that needs to be told because I feel many readers will be able to relate easily and fall in love with these two as much as I did. A military man returning from another tour. A scared and fragile young woman doing and acting the only way she knows how. When these two meet, the attraction is immediately there but there are so many trials and tribulations they are put through making each one questions their worth in each others life's. There is selfishness and selflessness. I know there were many times I was not expecting this book to end the way it did but I'm so glad it did. I definitely wanted to give Daphne a high five...lol
I most definitely can not wait for more to come from this author!!

Domestic violence is something that is experienced in far too many homes. For those of us on the outside looking in, we can easily grow impatient with a family member or friend who continuously stays with or goes back to an abuser. We want to make them see how much more they deserve and how they can build a life without the abuser. Ryan's book Ravel focuses on just such a circumstance with Daphne, the female protagonist.
Daphne is the typical character designed for a DV storyline. Coming from a unstable home, she easily second guesses herself already. Add this to her violently abusive boyfriend Trent and this illustrates an abuse cycle that can be dooming. Daphne's characterization is so on point in illustrating how fatigued DV victims can become in their situations. Just hopeless. I did feel Trent's characterization was a bit stereotypical but not so much that it hurt the storyline or made the entire relationship feel contrived.
What I loved most about Ravel, however, is how that while Daphne does end up with a love interest in Kemper, this new relationship isn't where she necessarily derives her power. While Kemper might give her confidence and self-esteem, she arrives at her own self-awareness from herself. I really appreciate that message.

I am finally catching up with myself after the busy holiday season, traveling, and the nasty flu bug. During the month of December I was overwhelmed but still found time to read. I read some fantastic books and some not so fantastic books. The problem was trying to focus on writing a solid review. Ravel by Shari J. Ryan is one of those fantastic books that I could honestly rave about. It is a solid 5 Star book and had every element I look for in a book. It was packed with heart-rendering emotions, dynamic characters, and life issues that so many people deal with on a daily basis. One is suffering PTSD and survivors guilt, the other has suffered through an abusive relationship. Shari J. Ryan handled these issues with extreme care and made them very real for her characters.
Kemper and Daphne will capture your heart. You will ache right along with them and rejoice when they finally find that their love can soothe their souls.
I highly recommend Ravel by Shari J. Ryan.

Star Rating:
5 amazing beautiful stars
"No one should have to go through war to find peace"
Tears. Lots and lots of tears. It was emotional and eye opening to whoever doesn't understand the circumstances of DV. It's a horrible silent epidemic and I am happy with how it was explained in a way to easily understand in this book.
I felt everything that she felt and went through and that was tough. How much can you take for how long before you crumble or before you find the right person to open your eyes fully?
This one I will remember and hopefully get for my collection of PB. DV is no joke. This book shed light on a sensitive subject but it also shed some light on military life and those struggles for the men and women. I'm not gonna go into too much detail ok it because it would spoil it and I'm not gonna do that to anyone. I do however strongly urge you to read this and go thru the stages that happen in this book in all aspects. Truly a great read and my first from Shari but it will not be my last.

I absolutely adored this book. The story dealt with some subjects that were definitely difficult to read about.
Daphne is in an abusive relationship when she meets Kemper just returning from Afghanistan who is struggling with getting his life back together after the loss of his buddy.
"Pain is an ugly piece of art hanging on a wall inside of me. It’s a permanent fixture that doesn’t look beautiful from any angle. I’ve learned to ignore it when it catches my eye, but seeing pain in someone else makes me want to fix it."
This story was so emotional! I needed a support team for parts of it! Nothing was predictable. I was kept on my toes throughout.
Daphne really grew and learned how to stand up for herself and not be a doormat. She became such a kick-ass heroine who fights to find her own happily ever after.
"Kemper’s hands cradle my face as he brings his lips close enough to touch, but he hovers for a second, whispering, “And this is love,” before pressing his lips against mine."

Inner Strength
Daphne was in an abusive relationship, no matter how hard she tried to leave, her abuser always found her until one day she met Kemper who was the sunshine in her dark world.
Kemper was facing his own demons as well but he gave Daphne the courage she needed to take a stand and she did....she was no longer the meek woman who would crap from her deadbeat boyfriend, she found her inner strength and made some changes in her life.
RAVEL was heart-wrenching, two yearning souls found hope, happiness and a brighter future amidst all the pain, abuse and loss. Most importantly Kemper and Daphne found a HOME in each other.
Shari J. Ryan did a marvelous job. It's a must read so grab yourselves a copy whenever you get a chance.

Ravel is my first book by Shari Ryan and I have to say I was intrigued by the blurb. My hubby is a war vet and sometimes these stories are hard to read, other times they just kinda sit right there in your heart.
Daphne is in a bad relationship. She can't get out without their being consequences, but a Marine just might be what she needs.
Kemper is destroyed. He's been in for a while, but the death of his friend/brother might be the thing to ruin him. Instant attraction between the two but she's taken. He'll be her friend but he wants more.
Their relationship starts rocky, but just when you think you figure out where things are going you just get startled and hang on for the ride. It was very good and I appreciate getting a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Tears ! A whole bunch of tears. This book is very emotional. But it was a very good book. Daph is in a very abusive relationship of many years. She is this gorgeous girl whos self-esteem is so low because of her 'boyfriend' she thinks that nothing can come good for her. Well that is until Kemper walks into the bar and sits down. He just got back from a deployment and its like Daph and Kemp hit it off.
You need tissues for this book. But this book will keep you up til 3 in the morning (It did me) also. This book is a roller coaster. It'll have you smiling, laughing, awwing, and last but not least balling your eyes out. Its very heartfelt.

You ever read one of those books, that you end up staying up all night reading, because you become so invested in their struggles. Yeah that was this kind of book for me.
I am not sure how I find these military romance books, but I am glad I do. This one has so much in it. We have domestic abuse, PTSD, rape, stalking, all warped up with a sweet romance story...

Although this book started in a strange place and with a slow pace, it eventually picked up. It presented several difficult issues, which can be rather hard to do. The author touched on sexual abuse, domestic violence, family dysfunction, incest, war-related trauma/injury and infidelity. There was a lot to consider. In the midst of all of that, the writer tried to create chemistry, love and romance between two people who were broken and emotionally spent. In the end, each person found a new place to breathe.

WOW
This is my first book by this author and I am blown away. I can relate to this story. I was in the navy and was married to an abuser. Shari made you feel everything Daphne felt, she takes you through the ups and downs. The joy and fear. I couldn't put it down. I bought it today and had to read. If reading about abuse triggers a bad reaction then this isn't a book to read. Its a happily ever after but getting there is painful. Well written, I look forward to reading more by this author.
