Our Emotions And Behaviour

Who Feels Scared? A book about being afraid

Rate this book
Jack is having a sleepover at his house. But the boys hear noises and they get very scared! Jack's big sister Ellie says she gets scared sometimes as well. Perhaps Dad can make them all feel better? This series introduces young children to different aspects of our emotions and behaviour. A fictional story is backed up by suggestions for activities and ideas to talk about, while a wordless storyboard encourages children to tell another story.

Who Feels Scared? Jack’s friends Ravi and Kevin were very excited to be having a sleepover at his house. But while playing in his room they heard a noise and his friends were scared they hid thinking I was a lion or tiger. But Jack wasn’t afraid because he knew it was Gus, the dog. Then they heard a noise from Jack’s closet and they thought it was a monster and they were really scared. They talked about things that made they scared like scary story, fireworks and noisy from big air planes. This book helps reassure children that they can cope with their fears and be brave. I highly recommend this book for parents and classroom teaching.

The illustrations are simple and show each of the character feels and emotions about what is happening in each story.

This isn't an especially exciting book, but it is great to begin a discussion about overcoming fears. In the story a group of kids have a sleep over. Each of the kids has something that they are afraid of but each time one or more of the kids is not afraid. The children learn from each other how to overcome their fears. This could be used in a storytime about bravery or overcoming ones fears. During the reading the librarian could ask the children to name some of the things that they are afraid of and then ask the other kids what they do to deal with their fear. The end of the book provides tips on how adults can share this book with their child and to make it interactive.
