A Neat Ending.

The Kaufman family has a German Shepherd which is very well trained. It’s even been to obedience school.

But one day, it attacks little Bobby Kaufman. For no reason. So the Kaufmans have it put down.

What would make a dog that’s so obedient and well behaved attack a family member so viciously?

Five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Poor King. He's just a chemically-augmented, super-intelligent dog who wants to kill a few people and be left alone. Mankind are a bunch of jerks.

Sort of a goofball book but I enjoyed it. Secret government scientists trying to figure out how to make super smart humans are messing with a dog's brain and use prisoner DNA, creating a super smart, evil, and bigger/stronger dog. It hates humans and just likes to kill. Doesn't really seem to have a main character, just sort of flits around the points of view of a few different characters, most enjoyably the dog itself.

“I’ve been on a hunt,” he said, “only I think I was after the wrong animal most of the time.”

The Kaufman family (Wife Clara, husband Sid, daughter Lisa and son Bobby) are being traumatized by a phantom German shepherd resembling their recently deceased one. When their dog King became unexplainably violent and orchestrated a vicious and bloody attach on young son Bobby before turning his teeth on Sid, the family knew the dog they loved was no longer theirs. Forced to be shot by the police, it left the family victimized by the attack. Meanwhile deep into he food an Institute is running labs on an engineered dog who holds human intelligence and capabilities nobody could of imagined. Learning over the years to problem solve, to open doors, to think, Phantom was a weapon being born before anyone knew a thing. When he escaped, he would wreak havoc on the small town leaving behind brutal attacks and many deaths before being hunted down and traced to the Bronx in New York. There, small town detective Harry Michaels and trapper Mike Qwen along with his trusted dog Maggie would continue where Qwen left off in the woods in their hunt to stop the bloodshed. As the dog began a spree of killings, he would be traced to an abandoned building where Qwen was forced to tranquilize the animal. Falling through the collapsed structure, Phantom was dead before he hit the ground. Meanwhile Sid in in the ICU following his wife's assault from the dog resulting in head trauma and a punctured lung. As the Detective and trapper ride back home, they can't help but wonder if it's truly over. On the other side of town, a young buy and his grandparents see there dog Candy has given birth, and the puppies have oddly human eyes. Turning out to be offspring fathered by Phantom, these puppies have the capabilities to become cold blooded killers.

“You can only be dead for good, Bobby. There’s no other way to be dead. He won’t be coming back, if that’s what you’re worrying about.”

Very different to the blurb on the back !
More interesting from the Dogs point of view, an anti climax and no real explanation of what happened to the scientists !
Dated but still an acceptable story

Was interested to read this after I read Cujo by Stephen King and wanted more pets going insane. It was a decent book, not that scary or creepy but interesting. Felt a little to long tough but an decent read as I said before.

Neiderman is such a good writer that his prose is able to maintain a boilerplate "lab animal horror" story. As always, Neiderman works best when we're really in the heads of his characters, and the stretches from Phantom's perspective are the best in the book.

Snarling dogs and children. Not a good mix if you’re squeamish.

Bobby, a young boy has been attacked by his dog King a German Shepherd and now King must be put to sleep. However, Bobby keeps seeing King all about him. What’s going on?

I read this way back in 1989/90. It was a work lunch time read. I’m showing my age now. I remember being totally engrossed in it. Horror was a popular read at that time and it’s a genre that has always been a favourite, even now.

The theme of the story is stop messing about with stuff. Yes, you! Scientists! I am talking to you!

I found it entertaining and engaging. I can’t go into too much detail as that was 30 odd years ago (Oh My). But from what I remember I recommend it, especially if you are a horror fan.

While I did enjoy this book, it was not the terror filled story that I was hoping for. The description leads one to believe that there are several attacks on the fine folk of Fallsburg and people become so afraid that they lock their doors and cower in fear as they are tormented by the howls of this vicious beast. In reality I can only recall the dog howling once and it was in the woods where no one could hear it. It also only terrorizes one family, though there are other killings.

This was definitely an interesting book. I liked the majority of it, although I felt like there was at least one part that could have just been skipped. It's fun to read about genetically modified animals though and makes me think of the horror movies that have been made with such animals. This book is definitely worth a read, but I am not sure I'll pick it up a second time.
