Mike Berenstain
486 books172 followersMike Berenstain grew up watching his parents, Stan and Jan, working together to write and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Mike is married to Andrea and they have three children. They live in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks a lot like Bear Country.
Mike's earliest memory is of his parents studio in suburban Philadelphia. He remembers sitting on the floor scribbling on yellow typewriter paper with a big black pencil. His mother looked at the tangled hairball he had created, pointed out some random shape and said, "Look! Youve drawn a fish!" It did, indeed, look like a fish. That was his first drawing lesson. Hes been drawing ever since.
Aside from drawing, Mikes primary interests growing up were playing whiffle ball with his older brother Leo, collecting insects, stamps, coins, bottle caps, baseball cards, etc., building model planes, playing Davy Crockett in the backyard and fishing. He was also interested in watching the creation of his parents magazine cartoons during the 50s and finally, the birth of the first Berenstain Bears book in 1962. Hes often asked which is his favorite Berenstain Bear book. The answer is THE BERENSTAIN BEARS PICNIC, created when he was twelve. It features a picture of Papa Bear getting a big load of garbage dumped on his head. He thought this was very funny. Ever since, hes enjoyed drawing garbageapple cores, banana peels, old bed springs and the like.
Mike attended art school in Philadelphia in the early 70s, then worked as a designer in the Childrens Book Department of a New York publisher before starting his career as an author and illustrator. His first childrens book was published in 1976 followed by some thirty more over the next sixteen years. These ranged in subject from wizards to dinosaurs.
Since the late 80s, he has been very much involved as a writer and illustrator with his familys creation, the Berenstain Bears. He continues to work with his mother, Jan, creating new books, writing and illustrating.
Aside from the bears, Mike is interested in many thingsin classical music, American history, astronomy and physics. He likes to ski. He spends a lot of time with horses.
Mike is married, his wifes name is Andrea. They have three children whose antics and activities growing up have provided inspiration for many Berenstain Bears books over the years."

THE BERENSTAIN BEARS SCHOOL TIME BLESSINGS is a cute book about going back to school, separation anxiety, dealing with the most favorite and least favorite class subjects and asking for help when you need it.
It shows preschool children that school can be fun and that they will get to go home with mommy and/or daddy at the end of the day. It also shows that older children don't have all fun and games, there are confusing subjects, but with God's help (and maybe a parents, grandparents, or a friend's assistance, too) they can figure out even the toughest subjects.
If you have a favorite child starting school for the first time later this summer/fall, then you will want to pick up a copy of THE BERENSTAIN BEARS SCHOOL TIME BLESSINGS. Recommended.
It shows preschool children that school can be fun and that they will get to go home with mommy and/or daddy at the end of the day. In this new Berenstain Bear Living Lights book, Mama and Papa Bear remind their cubs that prayer and God’s love are always there to guide them and that they will support them no matter what the challenge.
My Review:
The first day of school is always an exciting time but nobody does it better than Bear Country. After a long and lazy summer Brother and Sister and even Honey are ready to get back at it. Even if that means work at least they won't be bored. But as I recall, when school starts back you get a little nervous about it all and Brother, Sister, and Honey are no different. Mama and Papa soon discover that there is something on the minds of their little ones and one day they sit them down to figure out what is going on with them.
Come to find out it's the usually back to school worries and Mama and Papa reassure their little bears that at the end of the long school day they will have them to come to but then they tell them about someone even bigger and better that can help them even more. God and the love that He has for them is far stronger than what Papa and Mama can have and He will definitely keep them safe and calm.

The lazy days of summer are coming to an end and for the Bear family that means a new school year is about to begin. And with this new academic term comes changes. Honey Bear is old enough to start nursery school. She's excited but a bit nervous as well.
The anxiety isn't limited to Honey Bear. Brother and Sister Bear have their own set of worries. Will the classes be too hard? Will Honey be able to be away from her parents all day? Mama and Papa Bear assure them that all will be well by pointing them to Scripture.
"As it says in the Bible," said Mama, "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.'"
"That's Psalm 34:4," said Papa.
The next day was the first day of school which brought about a lot of initial excitement. Eventually worry and anxiety began to creep in. After school the kids settled down to do their homework. The unease from earlier returned and Papa Bear noticed.
"I know schoolwork can be tough," he said. "But remember, you can turn to God for strength and guidance. Let's pray together."
I don't think there is a Berenstain Bears book that I don't like. But this book, School Time Blessings, has to be one of my new favorites. Common fears that are contained in a new school year are addressed and Scripture is used to calm those fears! What better way can we arm our children to face what lies ahead of them?
If you've got a kiddo that's about to embark on a new school year this would be a great story to read to them. You can then discuss with them what some of their concerns for the new year may be. I look forward to reading it with my grands that are about to start a new year of learning!

As a child I learned to read with the Berenstain Bears, so they will always a have a special place in my heart. I'm delighted that Mr. Mike Berenstain is continuing to bring the heartwarming adventures to the next generation.
In this book Brother and Sister are returning to school after Summer, and their sister Honey is beginning Pre-school. Though they are excited to learn and see their friends again, there are subjects that don't come easily that cause Brother and Sister to worry about the coming year...
A delightful read about going back to school and the haunting worries that come with change. Mama and Papa bear teach Brother and Sister that there is nothing to worry about, and that no matter what that they can always talk to God and ask for strength and guidance.
Overall, what a wonderful book, I liked the theme of not worrying and how scripture was incorporated into the story. A delightfully wholesome read, that is timeless as the stories were when I was growing up. A great story about trusting God with our worries, perfect for sharing.

Brother, Sister, and Honey are all nervous about school. Honey is starting pre-school so she's worried about leaving her parents and unsure about what to expect. Brother and Sister are excited about their favorite subjects, but are worried about the ones that they aren't so great at. Their parents talk about how they will help them, but also talk about how much God loves them and will help them when they are worried or afraid.
The illustrations are, of course, delightful and full of great details. I love the way the author writes at a level that will comfort and reassure children with similar worries and concerns, while still making it entertaining and fun to read. There are some suggested conversations ideas and some activities at the back of the book that parents can use to further the discussion of school worries or help the children find ways to work through their problems using faith like the bears did. Overall, this was another great book that our family is excited to add to the collection.

School is just around the corner here in my hometown. Teachers go back to work next Monday! It seems the summer gets shorter and shorter every year. In the newest book in Berenstain Bear Living Lights series, the Bear family is facing excitement and anxiety over the start of school. Honey is starting nursery school and Brother and Sister face challenges in their school work. New opportunities, new surroundings, new adventures! And isn’t that how it is for all children during the first weeks of school? I love that The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings addresses all of that and reminds both parents and children that God is always ready and able to help. Several Bible verses about God that reiterate that point are included in this book. Following the story, there are discussion questions and activities to make real life school challenges more manageable and fun! A great choice for back to school reading for preschoolers and elementary aged kids!

Brother and Sister Bear are excited for school to start! Honey Bear will be going to nursery school for the first time too. The Berenstain Bears School Time Blessings By Mike Berenstain I felt relied too much on the parents telling the children to pray to God to help them at school. Now I am a Christian and I support praying, but I feel that young children might not understand the difference between praying to God to be with them through out their struggles and believing that God will solve all of their problems. I feel like the book did not show the difference between the two. The parents should have told the young bears that they would need to do their best and that they could pray to God for strength or help. Then the parents should have told them that they would help them too if they needed it. I was sent this book for free for only my honest and unbiased review.

The Berenstain Bears books have changed a lot since my childhood. The most recent batch of books have been published by ZonderKidz with Mike Berenstain taking over writing and illustrating the franchise after his parents' deaths. While the stories are still simple and cute, the plots now have religious themes.
I have read several of the newer books and my thoughts on them have been mixed; the stories have always been cute, but some of the religious messages seemed a bit forced. However, I'm glad to say that isn't the case with "School Time Blessings." Yes, the book does have a few Bible verses that refers to conquering your fears, but it never feels forced upon the reader. Overall, The Berenstain Bears: School Time Blessings is a cute picture book for kids.

Summer is winding down and school is just around the corner. And the Berenstain Bears are ready to help make the transition a little easier. Mike Berenstain has continued his family legacy with this delightful new book, School Time Blessings. This is a perfect book to read with your children before school starts, especially if they go to a public school or preschool. I like the way he incorporates prayer and scripture for reassurance in the story. Kids will love the latest Berenstain tale and will learn from the family's solution of how to calm the fears of a new school year. I received this book in exchange for a fair review.

THE BERENSTAIN BEARS SCHOOL TIME BLESSINGS is a cute book about going back to school, I am a fan of all the Berenstain bear book as I grow up on them. This one is neat since it is written by the original authors son.
This book copes with fears children have of going back to school and tackling subjects they know they struggle with. A cute story about how father and mother bear show their cubs how God can help them. Colorful pictures grab children's attention. a fun book to read.
