This book starts out by insistently making the case for why coleus should not be dismissed as vestige of Victorian garden tastes, which seems like a waste of ink to me -- I would think that the audience for this book would be people who are already interested in coleus, or people like me who are wildly passionate about coleus, and put several dozen of them in our gardens each year. Once the book gets past defense of this plant, it settles down to being a good resource about plant lineage, cultivation, and use of coleus in the garden, and it ends with a glossary of a selection of coleus currently/recently available in the market, complete with great pictures. So, I'm happy with the book, if only because it gives me lots of pictures of coleus to look at until warm weather rolls around and I can have them in the garden again.

Although coleus are annuals in the Northwest, I would like to incorporated some for my summer garden. The book has wonderful color plates. There are illustrated groupings of plantings as well as how to propagate. the end of the book is describes the different types by characteristics: trailing, red, red with yellow edge, black with pink edge, etc.
