The Classical Moment by Martin Turnell, 1947, is a well-researched and interesting read. Turnell provides precise analysis and criticism of the works of the three great French playwrights—Corneille, Molière, and Racine, and how their works were effected by the society they lived in. However I may note that the quotations from the plays, and the examples he provides for his arguments are mostly kept in the original French; it was time-consuming to get the meanings, but worthwhile.
