Moroni Traveler #6

The Great Reminder

Major Lewis Stiles is dying of cancer, but he wants all his affairs in order before he is "called home." To that end he wants to hire Moroni and his father, Martin, to track down one of the prisoners he was responsible for during World War II. Unseen since his mysterious disappearance from the POW camp at Cowdry Junction, Utah, Karl Falke is still owed $132.07 in back pay, and Stiles wants Falke to receive his due. Knowing the chances of success are slim to none, Moroni is reluctant, but ever a soft touch for lost causes, he takes the case. The search seems innocent enough, but as with any investigation in the promised land, the Travelers soon run up against the Latter-day Saints. Moroni's childhood friend Willis Tanner, now a high-level bureaucrat in the church, continues to poke his nose into Traveler business, this time with the added incentive of keeping the prophet's niece Lael Woolley out of trouble. While grappling with issues of family and responsibility, Moroni realizes that the answers to riddles from the past are to be found in the small towns and silent graveyards of Utah.

Something is wrong with the audio version. I tried multiple times to download. Though it shows all parts are downloaded. The percentage suddenly jumps from less than 50% to more than 90%.

Too bad it's an interesting book. There is a missing German prisoner of war and the missing child of Moroni Traveler. The two stories play of each other.

The minor details about the Mormon church are not intrusive or distracting.

How would you go about hunting down a WW2 former POW German who disappeared decades ago? Moroni and his dad know - start by retracing his known steps. Once again, this series brings a little bit of history to the forefront. I didn't know we had WW2 German POWs on US soil. So, hey, one less person ignorant on that note here. Oh! And milk sickness - I had never heard of that before this book.

The hunt for the supposed lost Moroni the Third is still active. This time, Lael (grand niece to head of the LDS church) is leading the charge. While I applaud her helping the Travelers out, I wasn't so sure about her sudden, intense interest in Moroni. It felt false or forced. Perhaps the story felt it needed a little flirtation to spice things up? Well, it didn't.

The hunt for the missing POW leads the Travelers to yet another small Utah town. I especially liked the old German former POW who returned to Germany but then came back to Utah to be with his true love, and the desert. The ending gives us the answers we need to put the mystery to bed while also leaving the question of the missing Moroni III still open. 4.75/5 stars.

The Narration: Jeffrey Kafer continues to give us a great voice for Moroni and his father. I also liked his light German accent for a few of the characters. His old dying man voice for Stiles was really good too. All the characters had unique voices and the ladies sound feminine. While the pacing was good, sometimes the volume went up or down slightly, though it wasn't enough to affect my enjoyment of the audiobook. 4.75/5 stars.
