Celebrities such as Erykah Badu, Dennis Rodman, Common, and Lauryn Hill are huge fans of Afya Ibomu's colorful hats and caps. In "GET YOUR CROCHET ON!: Hip Hats"" and Cool" "Caps," Afya presents 20 step-by-step patterns of her most popular designs for women, men, and children. Chock-full of designs that are simple enough for a beginner but stylish enough for the most seasoned crochet artist, "GET YOUR CROCHET ON! "speaks to the crocheter in all of us and includes instructions for everything from choosing the right hooks and yarn to washing and caring for the finished piece.
This is solidly written, the patterns work well and the photos included are equally informative. Most of the patterns are relatively basic, making them good choices for beginners or for quick casual crocheting.
I would call this a crochet book for the masses. Most of the hats were constructed with worsted weight acrylic, a type of yarn that is affordable and readily available at every craft chain store and Wal-Mart in the country. If you or your teen are fans of hip-hip and r&b music, then you have seen many of these styles on your favorite artists. The first pattern I plan to try from this book is Queen, a stylish head wrap. My 15-year-old daughter is partial to a fedora-style hat in the book called Superfly. I'm looking forward to checking out the author's other book.
The best introductory crochet book I have yet encountered. The instructions are clear, with good photographs and illustrations. The patterns are all fashionable, but not so trendy as to be dated. Half of the hats are modeled by Common. Yes, that Common.
I would highly recommend this as a gift to young would-be crafters, or to anyone looking for a few good hats.
My hat is off (pun intended) to this author for coming up with a very unique book of hat patterns. I wanted to make several but haven't gotten around to any of them yet.
This book framed crocheting for me. The first book that used my wording and phrases from my culture but they pictures and references were awesome as well. A permanent stay in my library!
While I've only read two books about crochet, but I think this is great and would recommend it to anyone starting to crochet. Afya Ibomu goes over basic stitches (and I'm confident I'll remember them this time), terms, and techniques. Almost every pattern in the book uses worsted yarn, the most common type of yarn.
The hat patterns are clear and use common crochet abbreviations (there's also a handy guide in the book). There are a few errors, but most of them are minor, except for the fact that the type and amount of yarn is not listed for the first hat. I've made two of the hats with good results. The hats are fashionable, and Ibomu has a crochet business that is sometimes frequented by famous entertainers.
This is one of the books included in my must-have beginner crochet books list.
Hats are great crochet projects - portable, fast, useful, and easy to customize. Get Your Crochet On! Hip Hats & Cool Caps by Afya Ibomu is my favorite hat book of all time. The hats are well designed, the writing style is casual and fun, and you get to fantasize about having your hats worn by Erykah Badu and Common (two of the many great models in the book). The best part is that the book is beginner friendly. Another great thing about the book is that Afya isn't a yarn snob and most of the samples are made with regular ole Red Heart Super Saver. (The only difference of opinion I have with Afya is about the use of fabric glue for dealing with yarn ends. I much prefer to weave them in.)
I love this book and have made several items from it and varied the finish on the Soldier Cap many times with different embellishments. I love her creativity and style!!!! I hope she comes out with other wonderful pattern books
Some cool patterns...some very strange patterns as well. Ponytail wraps? I like her technique of adding elastic to help the hat retain its fit over time.
Love my queen head wrap. This is an excellent resource for crocheters on a budget. She does overestimate the amount of yarn needed but that's good because it allows for errors.
This is a GREAT book with some really fun projects. A few too many errors (which the author corrects on her webpage), but overall a really solid collection of modern hats to crochet.
Lots of slouchy hats with brims. Also includes bun holders, head wraps, tail wraps, and variations on the tam. Good patterns, but things I already have elsewhere.
