The Whisperer of Storms

Rate this book
Hope St. Clair always felt out of place, especially as a young clairvoyant living in late Regency, England. She has no interest in the things a young woman her age should. Rather, she assists the constabulary with missing person cases or solving crimes. Many times, her concern for others often comes before her own well-being. Her world is turned upside down when the man who haunts her dreams steps into her life.

The mysterious Hunter Rayne of Ravensworth, the most sought after man in England, is the only person Hope is unable to read, yet he is in dire need of her assistance. She is further alarmed when she has a disturbing vision involving him. Unforeseen circumstances compel Hope to flee her home, and her way of life. After months on the road with the Romany, she’s once again forced to endure Mr. Rayne’s enigmatic demeanor. Will she be able to look beyond her indifference to help him?

There's a lot to unpack here. Hope St. Clair is described as clairvoyant (in some instances she is, in others she's clairsentient). It's the late Regency, and she's determined not to be forced into marriage. She's helped the local constable solve missing persons cases, and is sure that if she marries that will no longer be allowed.

She has friends among the Romany, and she also has friends among the highest ranking folk of the realm, because she is also the orphaned ward of her uncle, who is a Duke.

And, of course, she meets and falls in love with Hunter Rayne, whom she is sure she has met before.

There are various paranormal elements at play here, not the least of them reincarnation, mediumship, and the aforementioned clairvoyance/clairsentience.

Veronica R. Winters has created a compelling, if someone unusual, story here. The challenge is that there are some distracting editorial issues that pulled me straight out of the tale a few times as I had to reparse a sentence to see her intent. I really do think it's a fine freshman effort, and her characters are well-drawn and multi-dimensional. It could just benefit from a bit of "spit and polish." The editorial issues cost this review a star.

I enjoyed this book. Somewhat different from what I usually read but it kept my interest. I liked the clairvoyance of Hope St. Clair and everything she incurred. I actually picked this book up from the staff lounge in school, as a read, pass and share, book. I would give this a strong recommendation!
