With a courageous young hero, exotic settings, non-stop action and short chapters this series will engage reluctant readers. Assistant Cub Scout leader Sam Fox is on a trip to North America with his pack when their bus crashes. With some people seriously injured, Sam and two cubs must set off to find help. They are thousands of miles from home, in the middle of the wilderness … a wilderness full of howling wolves, and a massive, unpredictable grizzly bear...
One of twelve children, Justin grew up on a farm in Otaki, New Zealand. He wrote his first book, a ten page cartoon about his pet turtle, Bubble, when he was nine years old. His next cartoon was about Moriarty, his guinea pig, and filled a complete exercise book. When he was eleven, Justin began writing his first novel, but conked out after 35 pages.
Justin D’Ath is the author of over 30 books for children and young adults, including the hugely popular Extreme Adventures series. Other books include Astrid Spark, Fixologist, The Skyflower, Robbie and the Dolphins, Infamous, and Why did the Chykkan cross the Galaxy?
Realistic, deftly played and laid out; what a juggernaut of a read!
A vehicle crash, a mysterious disappearance, a Bigfoot sighting; what more do you need for intrigue?
The "Extreme Adventure" book series by Justin D'Ath is intense. The books have held my kid's attention from start to finish. They each are a rollicking good time!
I highly recommend this series to all parents who have children aged 8 to 12. The very best of what constitutes a "good read" found here.
Grizzly Trap is about a boy named Sam who is on his way to a cub scout camp in America when his bus crashes. With all the adults hurt, he and two other cubs are forced to hike to the nearest highway in search of help. It isn't that easy however as the woods they are stranded in are filled with hungry grizzly bears, pack of wolves, rabid racoons and strange furry creature that almost seem... humanoid?
This has to be one of the best written middle grade adventure books that I have ever read. It was action-packed, funny, a little silly and a lot of fun. I loved the characters, especially Sam. He was fearless for a fourteen year old. He took on many dangers to protect the younger ones and saved the driver. He was smart and efficient. He knew what to do and remained calm in tough situation, always protecting his youngers mates.
I have to say that for a middle grade book I enjoyed this a lot more than I would have thought. Sure some elements were rather silly, including the Mogli thing, and the end was way too rushed for my liking. However, ignoring this, it well written and had really lovable characters. I would easily recommend this is to boys my brother's age.
Sam is back and this is the eighth extreme adventure that I have read about Sam being well lets face it a complete loon and facing death apparently every time he walks out his front door. I've said it before, but seriously stay home!!! How much trouble can one geezer get into anyway? Well apparently since there are still four more a reasonable amount. Anyway all that is argy bargy for what you paid the admission for, it was a reasonable read if somewhat OTT but what do you expect from these books this is not high brow literature this is just non stop action.
Another edge of your seat action packed middle grade novel! This story seemed to almost have too many elements in it and the ending with the bear seemed a bit unrealistic. Overall a great book and fun for the whole family to read together.
'Extreme Adventures' is the name of the series, and Justin D'Ath never lets his readers down! As always, our young hero Sam Fox literally experiences a mad chase to the finish - this time involving an unstoppable grizzly bear and a pack of wolves. Though a little fantastical - 'Shark Bait' and 'Man Eater' are probably my favourites - 'Grizzly Trap' still makes very good reading for upper primary to junior secondary readers. The whole series is outstanding, so don't miss it!
