What links the Taj Mahal and our skeleton? The Eiffel Tower and our blood? The street lamps that guide us home AND the salt on our food? The answers are calcium, iron and sodium – each one an element.
Forged in the Big Bang and in supernovas, the elements and their resulting compounds went on to create our Solar System, the planet we live on, the air we breathe, the water we rely on, and the proteins that would become life. This book provides need-to-know information on every one of the 118 known elements. Some, like carbon, oxygen and aluminium, are familiar; others, like gadolinium and tellurium, are not.
Inside the book, you will find the elements’ vital statistics, their important compounds and applications and the fascinating histories of their discovery. You will also find clear and concise explanations of what an element is, how and why the elements are arranged in the periodic table, and of the structure of atoms, the building blocks of everything around you.
The Intriguing Story of the Elements is your definitive illustrated guide to the elements. It is authoritative, accessible and filled with wonder.
I'm a hard grader, but this was an excellent non-fiction book. Just the right amount of science( not to much) but also gave us a brief history on each element, who was the person who found it, and how it got its name. Also listed some of the uses for each element as it pertains to today in business and industry. I liked it.
A good informative and illustrative book about the elements we often neglect unless in Chemistry class. The book is well written, with great illustrations and sums up interesting points and stories related to the elements. I dinged 1 star because the design of the book seemed pretty integral but it uses this odd grid pattern on all the pages that clashes with the font and spacing, which can distract from the actual text.
Overall would recommend and would hand to any child that may be interested in science.
