After a disastrous R&R where none of the Dogs got any rest or relaxation, they have returned to Camp Smokey, but they are not the same Delta Unit. Brian’s resurrection by Duke and Alec is only one of the new complications the Mad Dogs face when their sniper cannot control his feeding frenzies, even with Duke’s help. With Doc still comatose and H suffering mate-loss grief and Markus and Duke having their hands full with Brian, Oh and El try to hold the pack together. However, as the pack recovers, a new threat comes from a faction they never would have expected; their own Council.

I think so far this is my most anticipated book yet from Brenda Cothern and her Mad Dogs. The last book left on a cliffhanger, so I was so excited when this book finally came out. Some questions get answered, but there are a ton more questions that get raised in this series. While I did receive an ARC for an honest review, I'm also planning on buying a physical copy to complete my set, so far, of the series. This shifter series is far different from others that I read and follow, and the different plot twists and surprises that get mixed into the story are phenomenal. Now that this book is done, I'm anxiously awating the next! I definitely recommend this series to any ahifter fan, especially those that enjoy MM shifter stories.
I enjoyed the ongoing story (series) of the Mad Dogs. This story was suspenseful and left me waiting, not so patiently for the next book. I want to find out what happens to the Dogs next. A Good Read.
Remember what a disaster the mad dogs R&R was in book 4? This book carries on from there and the team is a mess. Doc is in coma and Brian is out of control and in the midst of all the drama the team is once again under threat. As mated pairs they are working well and trying to do their best but as a team the cohesion is missing and they need to rectify this before the council arrives with their nefarious plans.
This story is all about recovery and how the team can move forward. It is based entirely at their camp, there are no secret missions just a sense of being broken and the need to fix themselves. There are only 3 pureblood mad dogs left in the pack and no one is quite sure what this means for their future. Nobody is sure who to trust and the pack turns inward for survival. I hadn’t gone back and re-read all the books this time before I started and initially it was confusing with the use of initials instead of names. You have to read this series in order for it to make any sense.
S.N.A.F.U raises as many questions as it answers and readers will be desperately hoping the wait for the next book is short. Brenda was creative in her ending and left me pretty clueless as to the next step!
This series just keeps getting better. The introduction of things like portals, other supernatural beings, and created werewolves discovering there are natural-born werewolves, has me hooked. Hot alpha-male military shifters are at the top of my favorites list, too. Can't wait to read the next book, A.W.O.L., and I hope the series continues.
Also really love the fact that the author lives right across the bridge from where I was born and raised in Florida. That she is a huge supporter of some very worthy causes and LGBT groups which help people deal w/important issues, is a beautiful thing and an added bonus.
All I want to know is WHEN is the next Mad Dogs book being released?.......?
I love books in a series and I love the Mad Dogs. I think this is the best Mad Dogs book to date only because now we are getting to the story. The other books were like information on the Mad Dogs now we want to know what will happen with B is he going to be able to control his feedings. Will M, B and Docs blood continue to mutate. Will the remaining Mad Dogs find 3 more recruits to change. Will they all be able to make it to shadows in 2 weeks. What will Dukes role be now in the group. Plus many more questions and Brenda Cothern has thrown all this into one book without making it all a jumbled mess. This series has become an absolute favorite for me. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens.
Brenda Cothern has done it again! Another awesome book in the Mad Dogs Series. Chapter 20 is the best chapter I have read in a long time. I can't wait for the next book.
I loved this book and this series. Each book got better and I had a hard time stopping and I am going to be waiting on pins and needles waiting for book 6......
I just completed the 5th book. I feel like the series is finally FINALLY filling out. I’ll be honest, I nearly walked away after the first book. I mean it felt like I was just reading some form of porn. I stuck it out though bc I’m ocd about finishing books I start and the audio I have paired 1&2 together. So I continued. 2 felt the tiniest bit better so I read 3 hoping the author would catch their stride. Book 4.... what the heck do I just read/listen to? Anyway, there is a book series I absolutely loved that was split up the same way this one was. I read somewhere that that series the first several books were meant to be one but the publisher insisted it be split up. (Idiotic). The thing about that series though, was that the first 4 were meh until book 5 (the first that didn’t get paired. Book 5 their was where I really felt the story began to move and progress but none of book 5 would have been nearly as good without the background from the previous four. I know it seems like I’m rambling but I have a point. By book 2 I decided to view this series the same way.
In my head I told myself the paired books (1+2,3+4, & 5+6) really should be just 1 really big book. As individual books, each of the first four would have annoyed me. But by looking at them as parts of one, I think I mostly liked it... (the chaos at the end of 4 throws me a bit). Book five finally felt like a full single instalment. The start was still a bit drawn out but it almost had to be to give the basic “intro to next book and reminder of prev” info dump. I also appreciate that while there still is a TON of sex, it feels more like those moments serve a purpose in the story rather than sex just to up the word/page count.
I am mostly glad I stuck it out this far and am looking forward to book 6. (Which I started 5 minutes after finishing book 5.)

It seems we’ve been waiting forever for this next installment in Brenda Cothern’s Mad Dog series. OK, so it has only been like 8 months, but seriously…it felt like a lot longer!
This current installment, aptly named S.N.A.F.U, picks up immediately after the end of book four, R&R. These books really need to be read in order, or you won’t at all understand who everyone is, particularly with the use of only their first initial to designate the members of the pack. Although this is described as a Special Forces thing, I’ll be honest and tell you that it really has bugged me throughout this series. I’m always trying to remember who each person is based on their letter, then once in a while their actual name is used, and it throws me off.
Characters were introduced into this series in book four from another one of Brenda’s series, and the bar, Shadows, in Tampa is again mentioned in this book. I’ve yet to read her Shadows series, so now feel I better so I understand that connection as well. That isn’t a bad thing, because I do enjoy Brenda’s writing style and voice!
In S.N.A.F.U., the team has traveled back to the Smoky Mountains and their secret base. As a personal aside, I found it really funny when I discovered in this book that the base is very close to Linville Falls. On my recent road/camping trip I stayed at the Linville Falls Campground along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Wish I had known those sexy Mad Dogs were right up the mountain. I think I even had the Mad Dogs t-shirt that I got at Rainbow Con this year on while I was there!
Back to the story. When we rejoin the guys, Doc is still in coma, Brian (B) is still recovering from his lifesaving turn into a vampire-werewolf, and his partner Markus (M) and Duke the vampire are helping with that transition. Brian isn’t able to control his need to feed as a vampire still, and the pack still doesn’t trust him to be able to.
As the series has gone on it has seemed to be moving further and further from the werewolf-soldier story that it began as. In book five we’re back to only the Mad Dogs (now plus Duke), but again we have a cliffhanger ending and I’m not at all sure where the story is going next! With the pack being threatened by their own Council, where will they go from here and can they remain together as a pack?
I feel this current book was kind of “filler”. It didn’t really seem to significantly further the storyline, but instead just kind of gave us more info on the shifters themselves and how they are evolving. In addition, I’d really like to see some of the background stories tightened up a little. The ongoing war between the two opposing organizations, the mysteries with the Council, etc., are getting a little vague and confusing to me. Too many things are going on in my humble opinion, and somehow we just dropped the guys from Tampa. Will they be back in the next installment?
In spite of some of those issues, I’m going to rate this one as “Liked It / Above Average”, or 3.5 out of 5.0 on our Love Bytes scale. I recommend the book and the entire series to anyone who enjoys a good shifter series. I’m personally enjoying the read and hope that Brenda keeps going with it at least for a couple more books. I would hope though that we don’t end up with a double digit number of books in the series, because I’m afraid it might get stale if carried on too long.
Once again Cothern completely blows me away with this series! With each book that I read, I think that it can’t be topped. And then I’m proven wrong.
I would say that this book shouldn’t be read as a standalone, for the simple fact that you would miss out on so much background information on the Mad Dogs. Granted, Cothern does give enough information that you would be able to pass by without having read them, but I wouldn’t suggest it.
Cothern has a skill in writing the characters so well that you can’t NOT be connected with them. When B cried, I cried. When H was suffering, I was in near tears. When they were happy and laughing, I couldn’t help but laugh.
This book answered many questions that I was left with at the end of the last one, but it does also open up a bunch of new questions as well. Which I know that Cothern will be addressing in the next book in the series.
There’s so much action and drama happening throughout the book that if you look away for even a moment, you will miss something drastic.
Overall, I’m blown away once again and I can’t wait to get the next book in the series.

I absolutely love this series...although, I have to say that this book wasn't my favorite. I was so excited to read this, feels like I have been waiting forever for this book and that probably added a little to my disappointment. I thought the book moved the story along and I am looking forward to the next one to see what happens, but I just didn't connect with it. I think sometimes this happens with series, I can think of a couple other series I have read where one of the books just didn't do it for me...they come off as kind of transitional where they move the story along but and get you where you need to be for what comes next and that is kind of how I felt about this one. So, now I will patiently (not so patiently :o) ) wait for the next one!
Felt like I've waited ages for this after the madness of R&R!
Love this series and this installment had me reading on the edge of my seat - so much going on right from the first pages with watching the guys dealing with all the changes forced on them. Loved how much M supported B no matter what and the love and faith he had in him :)
Each of the mated pairs in this team work so well together as well as a unit altogether.
Lots of drama and tension in this book dealing with an impending full council visit and what it means for the pack as they have very little trust in the council after that bitch Shanna.
Can't believe how Brenda ended this - I need the next book NOW, pretty please!
Lately I've had a hankering for the combustion of m/m and military. Maybe it's all of the male machismo and tattoos (wink). Throw in the absolutely hot vampire (Duke) and my my - it's a group that I became attached to very quickly.
This is the fifth book in the series and it was probably my favorite of the bunch (hoping it's not the last!!).
The intensity for book 5 was more around the relationships - dealing with the aftermath of bad stuff, letting your guard down, and trying to move out of survivalist mode without being stupid about it.
If you've been keeping up with the Mad Dogs series then you feel me when I say damn Brenda for leaving us hanging. If you havent yet been hooked on the mad dogs I would say get hooked.
