For more than two centuries, Samuel Bagster's Daily Light from the Bible has encouraged Christians with its inspiring devotional compilation of scripture. This brand-new edition, featuring Daily Light's morning readings, offers the classic King James text in a totally new typesetting, while a complete scripture index makes it easy to look up favorite verses.
This little, leather-bound book does not seem like much, but it is a very helpful book and an unusual book. Each day, you have a morning and an evening reading. The readings are scriptural based and calls us to refocus our attention on the Lord.
This book is unusual in that it was put together and published in 1794 by Samuel Bagster in London, England. Bagster was a forerunner of Marshall Pickering. The book was originally published in the 1611 King James Version. Anne Graham Lotz, the daughter of Dr. Billy Graham and Mrs. Ruth Bell Graham, received a copy of Bagster's book when she reached age ten. She carried on the tradition to her own children. However, Lotz had the book upgraded to the New King James Version, the version in which I am reviewing. I, too, received a copy at a young age - in my ninth year of life.
It is a book that have always been a source of help and comfort. A book that I have always remembered throughout my life, even when I went off to college and it was accidentally left behind at my parents' house.
One amazing aspect of this book is that it was published in 1794. The Internet and research that we now have or can use was not in existence. Bagster had to have been very knowledgeable about the entire Bible as he used scripture each day from both the Old and New Testaments.
I intend to read this book each day, year after year, again and again, for the rest of my life.
This is a treasure that will last for years and would make a great gift to someone that you know will use it for their devotions. The Daily Light for Life's Moments at the end is filled with Bible verses related to particular topics divided into four major categories. What I like most about the devotional is that it is all scripture that contains both the Old and New Testament on any given day. The verses for each day, morning and evening, are loosely tied to an unannounced theme. But that is the uniqueness of it in that it leaves just the scripture and you together to harvest what it may be saying to you that day through God's Spirit. The copy I gave to my wife is small but beautifully bound and is easy to take with you as you travel or just lay beside your bed on your lampstand whether you read it in the morning or evening or both.
The unique thing about this devotional is that it is COMPLETELY Scripture. I love that about it! Each day there is a morning and evening reading of topically-arranged Scriptures. The references are below the passage, so if you want to look up a Scripture to see the context, you can. It also comes packaged in a lovely, small leather-bound book, perfect for gift-giving.
This is a devotional book that was a birthday gift last year from one of my many beloved sisters.
First off, this devotional is like reading mini chain references on a specific topic. On the left page is the morning, on the right is the night. Verse references are at the bottom.
At first, reading this felt flat -- I’m not generally a fan of devotionals -- but then I decided to treat this like scripture because this devotional is entirely scripture. I would write in my daily log for each entry a one sentence summary and then one prayer based on the entry. On mornings when I’m too busy to do my daily reading before my daily tasks, this devotional helps center me. The night reading is a great way to cap off the day before you go to bed.
My sister, who gave this to me, has a large part of their family on the same devotional. Because there are two entries for each day and God’s word is deep, it never gets stale. I started again right at November 11th today like I did yesterday. I can’t see why this would not be a lifetime joy.
Finally, in the back are several devotionals of the same style but on specific times, emotions, or events. I found these a delight as well. This is small enough to fit in a purse or back pocket, intrinsically accurate because it is just charting themes through scripture, and each daily devotional is small enough that if I had no time because of family or work commitments I could still make time for this.
I loved this so much I even purchased it as a gift for one of my coworkers who wanted to get into scripture more.
nothing yet; I clicked on "read" to see if it's the same as my old copy, and I don't see any part of the book yet. How, then, do I actually get to "read" something from this book? I only want to see enough of it to see if it's the one I want to purchase. Evidently your "read" option has a broken link, as it doesn't do anything. If I understand correctly, by clicking on "read", I can see a sample of the book, but obviously this was a misunderstanding on my part. How can I actually SEE (read) a sample of it? If I would rate this site on my experience thus far, I'd have to give it zero (0) stars out of 5. I'm hoping someone can show me where I'm missing it so I can actually read a book sample on goodreads.com. It that were to happen, I'd gladly rate this site much higher, maybe even a "5". Thus far, your site for me has been like a bad dream or a dead-end street, totally frustrating. I've just returned to this site for the third time, and clicked on "want to read" (like on my 2nd visit to your site) ... and once again I'm sent here to answer the question (above this box): "What do you think?" Well, "the jury is out", as they say, on this one. How can I "think" anything about what I haven't gotten to see yet, because your site won't show it to me when I click on "read" or "want to read". Anyway, I just purchased the book at a different website. I really don't care anymore about seeing a sample; it doesn't matter now. When I receive the book from ebay, I'll get to see it for myself - and find out if it's the one I've been looking for.
This is my favorite devotional book by far. The compilation of various topical verses pulled from various books uniquely conveys and emphasizes the intended message while still using only God's word. Fabulous!
A beautiful, gracious woman with a love for the people of God. I APPRECIATE her take on the word of God, and APPRECIATE her walk in Christ, that bares witness to the fact. Thank you Anne, for being available to speak with me personally...
This is a beautiful, and very unique devotional which is nothing but verses from scripture. For each morning and evening there are a list of verses with a common thread.
