Love is the riskiest business of all

He’s the hot new guy in the small-town Wyoming office, a bachelor from L.A. with a trail of divorces behind him. But something about Blake Cobb has Sadie Felix setting her sites on him—even though he might just be her biggest competition in the race for a much-coveted promotion. Still, a little workplace rivalry will only make the tension between them more thrilling. At least, that’s what Sadie hopes, until she learns Blake’s already dating the boss’s daughter…

She’s an ambitious corporate climber with a face and a body that could stop a clock. Which is exactly why Blake steers clear of Sadie Felix—he’s been there, done that, with disastrous results. Besides, his new girlfriend is a dead ringer for his first love—the one who got away. But when an office scandal throws the boss's daughter in a new—and unflattering—light, Blake's forced to see what's been right in front of him all along…

"Running the Numbers" by Roxanne Smith is part of ‘The Long Shot’ romance series and features Sadie Felix, who is striving to reach the next goal in her long term plan, despite all of the obstacles in her way…jealous coworkers, a persistent and competitive ex, and the new guy in the office, Blake Cobb, who seems to have issues with distinguishing the women in his checkered past from those he is about to work with. Sadie’s determination to be valued for herself is going to be tested, and her office…and her life, may require a complete overhaul before everything is over.

This contemporary romance reminds me of a soap opera. The undercurrents and overt hostilities of the staff in an office that is somewhat of a battlefield in fragile balance, at least until a new player is added to the mix, is complicated by the history that most of these people continue to carry with them. I was a little startled by the amount of baggage that the main characters have to deal with before they even start trying to interact with each other, and, wow, I have to say…with a best friend like that, who needs enemies? It was difficult to establish a rapport with any of these folks at first, given the amount of angst that is a major component of their psyches, but gradually some of them start to display more likeable qualities. The mystery and investigation are a bit awkward to me, and the blithe disregard for complying with office rules was disturbing and unrealistic to my way of thinking. Despite all of this, I gradually came to root for Sadie, who has the courage to demand respect and the right to be appreciated for herself, not as a substitute for an imaginary ideal. I’m not sure I am convinced by the attraction that develops between Blake and Sadie, but I certainly did enjoy some of pithy comments that result from their interactions, as well as the remarkable apologies that are offered. Those in search of a light read populated by folks who are not afraid to air their drama should definitely try this.

Running the Numbers by Roxanne Smith
A Long Shot Romance #3

Conflicted is how I feel about this story.

I hate to give poor star ratings for books but this is a book that hits just below a three for me. Why?
• I did not like any of the characters.
• The plot was so-so and rather unbelievable.
• The romance, if there was one, did not resonate with me.
• The women and men were immature and lacked depth.
• It did not hook or hold me
• I could not see why anyone would want Blake, the main character.
• I could not warm up to any of the characters.

What did I like?
• The writing/editing was okay.
• The owner of the business, Duncan.
• The epilogue - it summed up the happiness all main H/h characters in the series managed to find.
• Eric/Erica the fox in Blake’s back yard.
• The concept of friendship if not the execution of it.

My guess is that if you have read the previous books in the series you will want to find out what happens to Blake – think the first books in the series were about two of his ex-wives finding their true loves - and whether or not he gets his act together and has a happily ever after.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The plot is interesting. There are a lot of things going on, that enhances the building relationship of the couple.
It's a fast-paced read, easily read in one sitting.
Sadie is an amazing heroine. Really, she is easy to love, relate and understand. She is the type that would be a great friend.
There are a lot of interesting people at the office.
Even though this is a romance that we clearly knows how is going to end, the author brought some creativity into it. All the baggage the hero was carrying was quite interesting.
This can be easily read as a stand-alone. This is a third book of a series, and I haven't read book one and two, and I have understood it all. It had  good beginning and ending.
The cover is great. I would buy this book without reading the blurb. I can see a sassy heroine, a hot hero, and the setting of the book.

Review 2

I struggle some with the hero. I know he had a lot of issues but sometimes he was too passive for me. I wish I had seen him fighting more, I'm not sure.
I didn't feel the chemistry between the couple, and I've missed some sort of action from the male. I-can't-resist-her-kind-of-attitude would have enhance their relationship for me.

Man, you're really hung up on your past. Past wives, past mistakes, past this, past that. What about right now? This minute. This week. This place, this time. Are you going to wait until you're fifty to concern yourself with the present, or wait until it's part of your past, too? by Sadie

You MAY buy this book because you like the author, you SHOULD buy this book because you have been following the series, but you MUST read this book if you want to see a sweet journey from friendship to love!!!

4*** Very Good story

** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

I related to Sadie from the very beginning, however, I had a hard time connecting with Blake. In fact, this is the reason I knocked-off one star from my rating. For almost half of the book, it felt like I was reading Amanda and Blake’s story rather than Sadie and Blake’s. And when he finally ‘sees the error of his ways’ so to speak and dumps Amanda, he totally blows it off and compare Sadie to one of his exes. Really? If he were real I could have smacked him I was so frustrated. But I guess that’s part of reading some romance stories. Sometimes the conflict part seems a bit too much. However, that didn’t mean I didn’t like the story. It has enough twists and turns to keep you going and the couple’s ups and downs were also engaging.
I recommend this book for readers looking for a quick and easy but good contemporary romance.

I quite enjoyed this contemporary, office romance but it just wasn't a 5 star read for me. There wasn't much happening other than an office romance and office politics. I would have liked a strong sub plot to add a little bit of excitement to the story.
The characters were shallow and not likeable. I didn't like Blake who compared every woman he liked to his ex wives. I couldn't see what Sadie saw in him except for his good looks and I felt that he wasn't good enough for her, especially as she had already come out of a crappy relationship.
Blake did redeem himself somewhat towards the end of the book but I just didn't really care enough to be excited about a happy ever after ending.

Amazing story

The lust and love you get from this book is amazing there is so much to take in but in a good way at the start you are getting to know the characters in the book you have Amanda avery who is the bosses daughter you have wes black who is always putting Sadie down but they have history which will captivate you then you have Kennedy who acts like a spoil child half the time but is best friends with Sadie then you have the man of the hour Blake who has problems he's living in the past and there's only one person to tell him how it is and that's Sadie.

I am giving this book 4/5 amazing read had me hooked from the start of the book.

I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.

This book was all over the place. I found the narrative dry and
monotonous. Nothing really stood out and grabbed my attention - I unfortunately got bored.

This book wasn't for me, too many characters but none of them were likeable. Blake spends most of his time thinking that the women in the firm look like his ex wives/mistress, which was annoying.

Whoa buddy! This book was utter chaos. I have to say, as an auditor in my "real life" I found this book completely ridiculous. Obviously the author didn't have any concept of internal investigations or how that process works. Also, Sadie was insane for dating Blake. He was so selfish!

The Good: Concept was decent, execution was terrible!

The Not So Good: How long do you have? Too many characters, no likable characters, unrealistic...etc.

The Verdict: 2 Stars

I found this book very entertaining with all the twists and turns. These characters would make a great soap opera. The story will keep the readers engaged.
