Excerpt from The Persian Mystics: Jalalu'd-Din Rumi
The object of the Editors of this series is a very definite one. They desire above all things that, in their humble way, these books shall be the ambassadors of good-will and understanding between East and Westwthe old world of Thought and the new of Action. In this en deavour, and in their own sphere, they are but followers of the highest example in the land. They are confident that a deeper knowledge of the great ideals and lofty philosophy of Oriental thought may help to a revival of that true spirit of Charity which neither despises nor fears the nation of another creed and colour.
frequently beautiful, bewitching even despite the apparently poor translation, but our fundamental ideological differences soured my enjoyment for a majority of the text;
The world resembles a mirror: thy Love is the perfect image: O people, who has ever seen a part greater than the whole?
O how long shall we, like children, in the earthly sphere Fill our lap with dust and stones and sherds? Let us give up the earth and fly heavenwards, Let us flee from childhood to the banquet of men.
love the death positivity, but not at the cost of love and relish of the world.
how disappointing to see someone truly recognise beauty in all its divinity and, in the next word, devalue it.
How do you rate a book published in 1907, with all of the value judgments it contains that depart from today's? I found the translations stuffy. The histories of the Sufis and of Rumi himself were helpful if taken in the context of their times.
A short historical overview followed by numerous collections of short poetic compositions. Read for personal research. Overall, an OK work for the researcher and enthusiast. I found this book's contents helpful and interesting - number rating relates to the book's contribution to my needs.
