The Story of the Plott Hound: Strike & Stay

Rate this book
The Plott bear hound, a dog originally from Germany and developed in the North Carolina mountains, is known as one of the world's best hunting dog breeds.
Recognized now as one of the premier hunting dogs in America, the Plott bear hound is unique among hunting dog breeds because it descends from Germanic stock rather than the traditional English foxhound. The breed's story began when its original breeder, Johannes Plott, and his brother Enoch left Germany in 1750 with their prized hunting dogs. This trip across the Atlantic began the two-hundred-year journey that would culminate in the North Carolina mountains with the development of what is now arguably the world's finest breed of hunting dog. This fascinating story of the Plott family and the Plott hound is a classic American tale of adventurers and underdogs--a story that Bob Plott, the great-great-great-grandson of Johannes Plott, is uniquely qualified to tell.

Great book! We rescued a Plott mix 4 years ago and he’s the best! Ordered this book to learn more about the breed and we all read it! So much great information, more than we expected. Bob’s knowledge is outstanding!

Until last year, I'd never even heard of a Plott hound. My husband got interested in the breed a few months after we lost a beloved family dog; he found our Plott, Atticus, at an animal shelter about 100 miles away from us.

This is an incredibly informative history of Plott dogs, and it was fun to read. It's clear a lot of work went into it and that the author is dedicated to the breed. These are amazing dogs, and I recommend this book for anyone interested in Plott hounds or the history of hunting in America.

The Plott Hound is North Carolina's state dog, and since several have been showing up in our shelter/rescue system, I figured reading up on them wouldn't hurt.

Great writer. Good story. Well worth the read, though I do admit to be a little afraid of Plotts now, because of their cur/fighting/killing blood.

(The dogs in my latest writing project are Plotts! Duke and Dilly.)

With so little available on the history of the breed, it is refreshing to read about the Plott Hound from a direct descendent of the founding breeder. Bob did a great job in providing the known facts and coloring them with out bias through family lore. I now have a much better understanding of the Plott Hound I have recently adopted.

Great read. Bob Plott is extremely knowledgeable about the subject (well, he should be, considering it's his family legacy!), and writes as though you're sitting down in a coffee shop, chatting. Many pictures used throughout to show different lines of the Plott Hound. I had never heard of a Plott hound until we adopted our hound girl and someone clued us into the world of Plott hounds.

the history of the Plott hound and the Plott family - from the 1750s when they both arrived in America to now.
considering the lack of early documentation, this is a skillful tracing of the dog's history.

This is great information on the dog and the Plott family history. I now have two of the dogs as family members.

Having rescued a Plott hound/pit mix about 5 1/2 years ago, I had never heard of the breed... now, I am an avid fan of these awesome k9 adventurers! Great history, great dogs, and Bob Plott's book is a winner! Have read it several times, and each time I take away a better understanding of the breed, as well as the people responsible for it's success. Here's a limk to one of the first articles I found in my early research, and the one that got me hooked on the breed...

And a link to a pic of my Plott...
