Excesses and universities, religious and civil disobedience, madness and brilliance, exile and murder were all parts of lives of the members of the Tudor line. Relive the history changing moments of the Tudor Dynasty beginning with the last king of the Lancastrian line, Henry VI to the ushering in of the Golden Age under Elizabeth I. Follow the Tudor family as they defied convention time and again, spy on the powerful men and women at Court, and experience the unrest of the nation that embraced and rebuffed the Catholic Church. Escape the subterfuge and plotting of courtiers and explore the intellectual and architectural wonders patronized by the often nefarious family. Royal life may have been pampered, but the crown weighs heavier on some than others. I find it a bit difficult to write reviews about books like this. This is a non-fiction book, so while there might be characters, it’s hard to judge them. And with this book, it is just straight-up facts about the Tudor and York houses, so there are no questions.. The book talks about how the Tudors finally came to power after years and years of the Yorks having control, and that’s it.
Don't expect anything in-depth with this book. It's only around 200 pages or so. It glosses over a lot of stuff that could have used detail. This author expects you to have a general knowledge of a lot of the monarchs and the different things they did during their reign. I'm going to be completely honest and say that a lot of my knowledge comes from historical fiction novels. But I have watched a few documentaries, so I'm not entirely clueless.
Basically, there isn't much more I can say about this book. Brush up on your monarchs like the Henrys 1-6 and Queens Elizabeth I and Mary, and you should be good! But this is a great start for those that want to start their journey into learning about medieval kings and queens.
Very thin on the details at the beginning, so it was difficult to have any real understanding of the causes of the war. I know it was essentially a dynastic rivalry involving two strong blood lines; however, this book would have benefited from more fleshing out at the beginning. I felt as though names and titles were being thrown at me initially, then once we arrived at Henry VIII the book became much more informative. Unfortunately I read the book to find out more about what happened prior to him as most of his storytelling fairly well known. Also, it is always difficult to keep people straight when you have so many whose names are the same, a family tree at the beginning of each section would also have helped the readers to follow more easily. Not a bad book by any stretch, but not a great one either. I will continue looking for a better picture of the beginning of the war of the roses.
