(Benjamin) Ifor Evans, Baron Evans of Hungershall was a British academic, university administrator and author.
He was Provost of University College London from 1951 to 1966.
He was knighted by HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace on 12 July 1955, and was created a life peer as Baron Evans of Hungershall, in the Borough of Royal Tunbridge Wells on 25 August 1967.
He wrote books on English Literature and the history of drama, including a study of Shakespeare's plays. He also wrote one novel, 'The Shop on the King's Road' (1946).
3.5*!! I picked this up in a charity shop for around 30p and it covers many of the areas I have looked at for my Drama, Theatre and Performance module at University which was really useful. There’s the odd phrase in every section which would be perfect for essay use too. I wish penguin reprinted this, adding the present and made it part of the Penguin great ideas range.
A great find. One of those impulse buys from my favourite 2nd hand bookshop.
This tiny volume is packed with just enough info to give you an educated introduction to the history of English drama and the dramatists who have shaped it into the way it is today. Well the way it was when this was published in the late 1940's.
The author keeps his own opinions to a minimum, which is refreshing, and even when they are included; they are almost as asides.
I was surprised at the brevity of the chapters on the later (18th and 19th) centuries, when compared to those dealing with periods where much of the work is no longer extant. The Tudor period in particular. But then again how can you not give Shakespeare a chapter to himself.
A wonderful read: clear, informative and a delight to read. Highly recommended.
I see there is a companion book on English Literature too...
a good reference book...again by Ifor Evans..who thoroughly depicts English drama and theatre and its different ages till the early 20th century! a beneficial one indeed!
