This wonderful and practical little book explains clearly and thoroughly how to make a good Confession but in much greater detail than covered in most catechisms. It includes an examination of conscience, contrition and its necessary qualities, the purpose of amendment and its necessary qualities, avoiding the near occasion of sin, the actual Confession of sins to the priest, and the penance given by the priest.
The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration are a congregation of sisters that follow the Rule of St. Benedict and practice daily Eucharistic adoration.
I know I have read this many times before, but guess I never recorded it. It is one of my favorite little Confession books. Have given away numerous copies, when I was Director of Religious Education, to my catechists, parents of children in First Sacraments classes, when I was leading classes, for gifts to friends, relatives, spiritual seekers, and just when the subject of Confession came up, etc. Pulled it out again to prepare myself for the Sacrament since it is again available here. It is a great little resource. 4 1/2 stars
I think this book has made me scrupulous. After reading it I'm afraid my confessions are invalid even after absolution. It also recommends "to include in the Confession a mortal sin from one's past life that has already been confessed and forgiven". I thought it was a sin to re-confess a sin already forgiven? It seems to assume that people frequently have mortal sins, I don't so now I worry I'm doing it wrong. The examination of conscience was pretty good though.
If you want one book that is going to change the way you experience and think about Confession, this is it! The entire first section is instructive and then Chapter 3 includes the best Examen I have encountered. This book will change your spiritual life!
O MY GOD, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all, Because they offend Thee, My God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and amend my life. Amen.
I've used it for some time before putting it away, but now I'm finding it again after some time buried under paper, so I'll try not to let it collect dust anymore!
