True story of survivalMother and unborn child beat cancer through faith and determination
One of the truly remarkable stories of faith and At age 29, Heather Choate was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was ten weeks pregnant with her sixth child. Her unborn baby became victim to the fast-spreading and highly dangerous cancer in Heather’s body that already spread to her lymph nodes. Doctors told her she needed to abort her baby to save her life. Heather told them, “I’d rather die than take the life of my baby.” Heather and her husband set out to find a way to save both mother and baby. The journey pushed them to the fringes of their stamina, tested the strength of their familial relationships and found them clinging to their faith like it was the last bit of thread on a lifeline.

Heather Choate was born in Littleton, Colorado. She now lives in a small town in Southern Colorado on a farm with her husband and five children. She chases chickens, declares war on the weeds in her garden and enjoys quietly people-watching. Most of her time is spent daydreaming of worlds and people that don’t actually exist, but reflect the beauty and complicity of humanity. Writing is her escape from diaper changes and runny noses but motherhood is the greatest journey and joy of her life.
Fighting for Our Lives: My Battle With Cancer to Save My Baby and Myself by Heather Choate is probably the most emotional book that I have read all year. It is an awesome testimony of the determination of a mother and the power of faith.
Life throws some very upsetting punches in Heather’s direction. Imagine being told that you have breast cancer at age 29...while you’re 10 weeks pregnant, with your 6th child. Any one of these things can be overwhelming, but to have them all on you at one time - and thrive - takes one strong, determined woman, a devoted husband and family, and faith in a loving Heavenly Father. Heather is, and has, all of those.
Fighting for Our Lives brought me to tears on more than one occasion. There are smiles and even a giggle or two along the way. Though I have not been diagnosed with breast cancer, I could relate to Heather’s feelings on many occasions. It is an emotional story, but she has a positive attitude and her faith is evident throughout the book.
This book is written like one would write in a diary or journal. Some days are skipped along the way. Some days just have a line or two. Other days, Heather pours out her heart in words that engage your heart, leaving you wanting to reach through the pages and give her a hug, as you both bawl your eyes out.
Fighting for Our Lives is an inspiring story of faith and hope. It is a story of being scared, but doing it anyway, because not doing it would mean the end of the story.
This book earns all 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone going through a tremendous test of faith, even if it isn’t cancer. You may cry an awful lot as you read it, but you won’t be sorry that you did. You may just find a revival of your own faith within the pages of Heather’s story.

This woman risked her life having breast cancer so that she could deliver her baby. This story tells as she says about the Lord in it beside her every way
This is a quick-reading, diary style memoir. Photos are included now and then. The book is about a brave and inspirational woman who suffers breast cancer whilst she is pregnant. She is presented with some terrible choices-how will the chemotherapy and other treatments affect her unborn baby? Heather Choate fought bravely and stuck out for what she believed in. There are some very poignant moments. Also included are links to some of her blog posts and an interview. This is an informative, interesting read as there are more details of the treatments than in some cancer memoirs. I felt it was just marred slightly by the repetitive God bits-I don't want to be disrespectful at all and obviously this lady has reason to thank God but I didn't feel it needed to be said too many times. Some bits are very good in this book, very engrossing, then there are some where it gets a bit religious again. It would have been better to mention this once and then leave it out in my opinion. I felt the book ended a little early; (unless she's writing another?) she was starting treatment again and it ended. As of February 2015 in the book she still has a year of treatment left-I was reading this in January 2016 so the story hasn't ended yet-or has it? So it just felt as if there should have been more before the book went to publish. I searched if there was any more info about her on the internet as I wanted to know what happened and if she was ok now. I was pleased to find info and pictures and just thought that was more of a conclusion.
This book gives women hope that there is life after breast cancer. It was straight forward and real and I loved the way she was able to be so truthful and show the full spectrum of how cancer affects not only her body but the sacrifices that the rest of family endures.
I don't necessarily agree with the Mormon doctrine but I found it heartwarming that she wanted to keep her baby despite having cancer. She risked her life most of all and I'm very happy her baby was healthy in the end. This confirms that she made the right decision. May both the mother and baby live a full, healthy life.
Words just can not express the emotions I feel for this book. I feel so humbled. As a cancer survivor myself I understand and every story is so different but I reward you for your courage and I thank you for this wonderful well written book. Definitely a must read.
Thank YOU, Heather Choate, for sharing your very personal story! Through all your turmoil, you have managed to share a heartfelt accounting of you and your family's experiences. Your story truly will have an impact on many!
This memoir is told through narrative and a series of journal entries. It is completely raw, honest, and moving. What an amazing testimony this mother has about following what God is leading you to do rather than what medical professionals think you should do.
