Written by a practicing musician, Goin' Back to Memphis is the first comprehensive history of Memphis musicmaking as it developed over the past 100 years, told in the words of the performers, record producers, and composers themselves. 75 photos.
As a whole the book was informative and entertaining. Near the end it petered out, but that could be due to the fact that the music in Memphis somewhat petered out as well. It was more a political thing than a music thing by that time. The early years are well represented, however, going back to blues singers, Elvis and the Sun years, The Box Tops and the Stax years. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in music history, especially the music history of the U.S. and/or the South.
