The Boss: Book One

Librarian's Note: This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN: B015OBIIVC

I've always been a good girl.

I've only done two really bad things in my life--secretly live in the maid's quarters of my beloved grandmother's foreclosed beach house, and lie to get a job as a personal assistant to billionaire Blake Carson.

My enemy, my lover, my savior.

He's only two out of the three, if only I can figure out which two before I end up on the streets or in jail.

Or worse.

A SIX PART SERIAL with dual points of view, lots of bad words, the creative use of glass-walled rooms, and a beach house that holds a whole lot of secrets. There are all sorts of cliffs in these books, some even include actual rocks. You have been warned.

”My enemy, my lover, my savior.”

This duo writing team delivers a very short first installment that leads to a reader eagerly one clicking the next book in this series. I liked the quirky heroine and the mysterious boss and the premise of the story is interesting enough that I’m almost done with the second installment actually.

Nikki Carson is mourning the recent loss of her beloved grandmother. She applies for a job as an assistant for Blake Carson. Mr. Carson is the man who has bought her grandmother’s willed home right out from under her feet. She thinks working for him will help her acquire the house back. I'm not sure what the heck her plan really is and I don’t think she knows either.

description

The glass use between the heroine’s art and hero’s business is a bit too much of a coincidence, however their hot and cold, back and forth, and ultimate break of decorum to flat out debauchery in the lobby was pretty entertaining.

”How was I supposed to hold out against someone who clearly loved glass as much as I did?”

description

The story of course ends with a cliff but lucky for me, the next few installments are already released and Blake’s POV will guide the whole next book.

”It’s you. It’s always been you,” he said.

Always? The question didn’t have a chance to take root in my consciousness. It drifted away under the power of his kiss.”

He was every sin I never knew I'd wanted.

You know that decadent kind of ice cream? The one where even if you get a small serving of it, it's oh so satisfying yet still leaves you craving more? The Boss is that ice cream for me, and it was absolutely delicious! It's tough to find a serial romance these days that can perfectly combine sizzling sexual tension with a plot that hooks you just the same. So of course it figures that the powerhouse writing duo that is Cari and Taryn pulled it off effortlessly!
I'd come here looking for a miracle, and I was walking away with a job.

Grace Copeland walks into the den of the enemy prepared to fight. She's prepared to lie and do whatever it takes to get her beloved grandmother's house back from the billionaire that probably doesn't even care what it means to her. What's she's not prepared for is to walk out with a job.

Blake Carson is a glass magnate that's not exactly known for his sunny disposition. He goes through personal assistants like another man may go through socks. So why on earth does he offer Grace the job after she basically calls him on his shit? Such is the enigma of this man.
Like the storm coming off the water this morning, he was a cold front slapping into a warm. The thunder was his voice, and I was the rocks trying desperately to hold out against the waves.
And the water was rising.

The sexual tension between these two is instant and so deliciously thick you can almost taste it. There's nothing I love more than a good buildup and this book serves that up perfectly. Cari and Taryn know exactly what they're doing and these two sure know how to tease and entice.

Volume One is written solely in Grace's POV which only serves to entice the reader with everything that is or isn't Blake. He's enticing, magnetic, and an all out mystery. Then again all this does is whet your appetite for more.

Grace is exactly the kind of heroine I love to read about. She's sassy and smart mouthed. This is a woman that gets knocked down and comes right back up swinging. I can already tell these two are going to be absolutely delicious together and I'm absolutely dying for more!
I was swept into the breath-stealing undertow that was Blake Carson and the force of his kiss.

After that ending, I'm not sure whether to rock myself in a corner somewhere in my wait for the next installment or to hunt down Cari and Taryn and beat them until they give it to me. All I know, is I'm hooked and I want it. I need it. I have to have it.

If you're looking for a deliciously sexy read that you'll devour in one sitting, guaranteed, look no further than The Boss. Trust me on this. You'll thank me when you meet Blake Carson. I have 3 words for you: Suit. Beard. Tattoos. You're welcome.

Sinfully hot, decadently sexy and addictively intriguing. What else can you expect from the Cari and Taryn dynamic duo?
“Like the storm coming off the water this morning, he was a cold front slapping into a warm. The thunder was his voice, and I was the rocks trying desperately to hold out against the waves.”

Grace Copeland didn’t think things through when she walked into billionaire Carson Blake’s office. She only had two thoughts: Carson is the enemy and her grandmother’s house must be rescued from his clutches. It never occurred to her that she would find the man unreasonably attractive and that he would give her a job… as his assistant.
“I'd come here looking for a miracle, and I was walking away with a job.”

Blake Carson is a smart, cantankerous, recluse, self-made billionaire. Such is his infamy that no HR agency will help him find a personal assistant. But Grace’s surprise interview and straightforwardness catches them both by surprise as well as the intense attraction on both ends.
“Want, lust, and attraction were chemical. This seemed so much more than that. A full frontal assault on the senses. Unforgettable. Elemental. Illogical. The one man who should’ve never had this kind of connection with me was going to destroy me—body and mind. And I was going to let him.”

This first installment of the Boss serial is told from Grace’s point of view which allows us to get to know about her and her motives but leaves the annoyingly sexy Blake in a shroud of mystery which only makes me want to know more.

Grace is smart and determined, she’s a tough cookie with a sharp tongue which was perfect for dealing with Blake and made for delectable banter between her and Blake and sweet and funny with the Jack and Vi, two supporting characters I hope we get to know more of.

Since Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott’s favorite heat setting for writing is hot, HOT, H.O.T. you can be assured you’ll get incredibly scorching sexy times even is this short installment. Add the fact that their prose is incredibly expressive, a plot full of secrets and you get delicious read with more questions than answers that will leave you wanting more.
“I was swept into the breath-stealing undertow that was Blake Carson and the force of his kiss.”

This is the first volume of six in The Boss series. Told from the heroine’s point of view with a cliffhanger.

Cari and Taryn have made me a convert. I'm usually not a fan of serials, but they've brought me over to the dark side. I mean, seriously, how could I resist? Blake rocks it like a boss. Literally. LOL

Grace is still reeling from the death of her Grandma. Her Grandma raised her, saved her from her preoccupied with themselves parents, always supported her, gave her unconditional love, and was the only family she had left. Now, she's all alone. As if that wasn't devastating enough, the hits keep coming. Her Grandma, once a very wealthy, well known in the "circles," woman was in debt, major debt. Like utilities shut off and things were sold debt. However, before she can do anything about it, the house is sold to...Blake Carson.

So Grace, riding on grief and anger, decides to pay Mr. Carson a visit. A little white lie, "why yes, I am here for the interview to be his assistant", gets her in the door. Her sass, honest viewpoint (ironic, huh?), and lack of fear where he's concerned land her the job.

The funny thing is that not only is Grace attracted to Blake, she's also really good at her new job. Of course, another blow gets thrown at Grace, which is she has 48 hours to find a new place, and she's working some serious late hours which doesn't leave her the time to accept her situation, house hunt, or come to terms with her growing feelings for her boss.

What happens when Blake and Grace fall victim to his strict security protocols and are locked in together overnight? You know what they say about the best laid plans...they just may lead to getting laid, period. ;-) But what happens next? Do they go back to their normal working relationship? Where will Grace live? There is one part towards the end where Blake lets something slip that makes me think he knows exactly what the situation with Grace is and that he's known all along who she is. I can't wait to read part two, which will be from Blake's viewpoint. I may need resuscitated though, because I think the wait just may kill me.

My opinion, read this, read anything that has Cari and/or Taryn's names attached. You'll become addicted to their work and you'll crave their type of drug.

Writing style not for me. I don't like when the characters in their own POV talk to themselves or ask rhetorical questions.

I could not connect. I also got bored of the heroine explaining in great detail (repeatedly) the richness of the building that she was walking into. I got it - the building was nice and "rich" looking.
Also, I understood *sarcasm* that the heroine did not drink caffeine and she only drank one Pepsi Max a day. Not sure why that entire interaction with the CEO had to be an entire page. I feel like there were a lot of fillers. (loc 243).

The heroine lost her grandmother's house to the hero who bought it the minute it went to foreclosure. The grandmother just died and the heroine was very upset about losing her childhood house. She wanted it back. The heroine got a job as the hero's assistant. Loved the premise. However, I thought the heroine would be different. I love strong heroines, but this one just annoyed me. I don't know what it was about her.

You may love it, but this is not for me.

Kitty's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

Creative, innovative, imaginative are just three words that pop into my mind when I think of the pairing of Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott. The Boss Vol 1 was all that and more and had me so engrossed that it only took me about three hours to read the story … I honestly couldn’t stop until I finished it.

Blake is an enigma … I have no idea exactly what his game is or what he’s thinking. Why the fascination with glass? Why hire Grace when she wasn’t on the list to be interviewed? He has an agenda and I have no idea what it is. I honestly can’t wait to find out just what it is, how much he really knows and how he’ll handle the situation. I know it won’t be with kid gloves since that, in no way, would be his style. He’s the Boss … there are reasons why all those other girls left in tears.

Grace’s agenda is abundantly clear – revenge and get her childhood home back. Blake Carson can have anything that he want’s in this world. Why would he want her grandmother’s beach house? Why buy it out from under her? Where is she going to live? She had no intention of working for him. But, when the opportunity presents itself, she decides that she’ll do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of things, find out the truth.
He’s a slave driver, she puts him in his place. She just can’t figure out why he’s so cold, so driven. Then, she finds out just how warm he can be and just how much her body craves what only he can give it.

So, there’s a cliffhanger … I was not a happy person with the way they ended this part of the story. Then, they have the nerve to tell us that Vol 2 is going to be Blake’s POV and not a continuance of the storyline. Ugh … at least I’ll find out what he’s thinking and feeling; just what he knows about Grace and her life. That was the only thing that stopped me from throwing my Kindle.

I can’t say enough good about the collaboration of Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott. Their imaginations ran wild in this story. Alone, they are wonderful writers and I love their work. But together, they are spectacular. They wrote intriguing, interesting characters and a story that just flew off the pages. They brought us into the heart of Boston and to the shores of Marblehead. They gave us a strong, independent woman who showed that she could hold her own against the man who is taking everything away from her. They gave us a man who’s mysterious, a slave driver and definitely … The Boss.

I've found a new serial that I am hooked on. This is the first book that I've read by either author and so far I'm loving it. I'm going to make this short and sweet because I need to get to the second book quickly.

Grace Copeland has just found out that her grandmother's house has been bought up by the billionaire, Blake Carson. Storming off to his office she has to pretend to be applying for a job as his assistant in order to get into the building. Once inside she decides to interview for the job. Maybe if she works for him and can get on his good side she'll have a better chance of getting him to listen to her and working out a way for her to buy back her childhood home.

Blake has run off every person who has interviewed for the job except for one, Grace. She's offered the job on a temporary basis and has been warned that he's not that easy to work with, but she's up for the challenge. Besides there is something about him that sets her skin on fire whenever he's near.

One night after putting in some long hours, they both find themselves locked in the building together...alone. In a lust hazed moment, they both throw caution to the wind and act on their desires. The sex between them is off the charts hot. Oh and did I mention that Blake runs a glass security business, so his entire building is see through. Luckily for them no one was around to catch their roll through the reception area.

But once it's all over, how are they supposed to work together? Can they remain professional? Will she use this as leeway to talk to him about the house? I'm dying to find out what's going to happen next, so off to Book 2 I go...

Grace's grandmothers house is being foreclosed and the person that bought is Blake C. (The Enemy)
So Grace gets ready to confront him, I assume but ends up getting a job as his personal assistant.
Then the next evening the realtor changes the sign from foreclosure to sold, and tells her she has less than 72 hours to get out including the furniture.. So instead of having an estate sale/yard sale for all 11 rooms of the house she goes and pulls a 17 hour shift for her enemy/boss. Who the hell does that?
You should be planning! Does she think santa, the easter bunny, and the tooth fairy are going to come and sell the stuff for her?
And then she supposedly dislikes him since he is "stealing" her grandma's house but she puts out for him?
Where the hell is your loyalty?

Stars: 4.5

Overall: Grace is on a mission and that is to confront Blake Carson because he bought her grandmother's house before she had a chance to try and buy it herself. She goes to Boston to confront him, but ends up walking out with a job and a new plan. There is something cold, dark and mysterious about Blake, that Grace can't help but to be attracted to him. After tensions run high, they have a sexual moment that changes their relationship with a cliff hanger.

I really enjoyed this story and I would personally change some scenes around, but overall I thought it was very well written. I also loved that Grace was such an independent woman and doesn't take any of Blake's crap. I really loved watching how she started to break his walls down and how the authors left you with a cliffhanger with a few clues about what the next book would be about.

What a delicious start to what I foresee as an amazing series. This was my first book penned by Cari and Taryn, but it will most definitely will not be my last!! I absolutely loved the story flow and build up between the characters of Blake Carson and Grace Copeland. This book is told only from Grace's POV, but not to worry, I believe book two is told in Blake's POV. Therefore, in this installment, you get to understand Grace's character fully but Blake remains somewhat mysterious, delicious, broody, sexy, etc...... ;) The writing was fabulous and completely draws you in from the first words....making you want to know what happens next. There are many moments that will make you smile, laugh out loud and feel just as frustrated as Grace feels. Of course, I don't want to spoil anything so you have to read this delicious treat for yourself....trust me, you WON'T be disappointed!! ;) (Blake Carson is totally worth every moment spent reading this book.....I cannot wait for the next installment!!)

Good story

After Graces grandma dose she plunges into a deep depression. She was all she had. To make matters worse, her grandmothers house that she had the best childhood memory has been repoed by the bank and sold to one Blake Carson.

She is determined to get the house back, so she storms down his business with intention of fighting for her birthright but instead ends up being hired as his assistant.

After working long hours, grace and Blake find theirselves stuck in the building, by a security lockdown system and they end up having a quick sexfest. When the security releases the door, Blake leaves Grace, without even acknowledging what they had done and she crumbles.

Lord this part of this series is left with an unbelievable heartbreaking cliffhanger! Lucky the second is available otherwise I would have went ballistic. And FYI, Blakes a complete ass.

I generally wait for an entire serial story to be available before I purchase, because

I....

Hate....

Waiting....

BUT, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to read this story as it unfolds. The partnership of Taryn Elliott and Cari Quinn is one of my favorites. I know whatever they put out will be easy to get lost in, and a good balance of story and sex; this is no different. Though the plotline may be a bit thin, the story is no less engaging, and by the time THE SCENE happens, I was sucked in. The next installment can't come soon enough.

Highly recommended for those who like a heaping helping of steamy with their story. Not recommended for at-work reading :)

This is a scorcher. If you've read The Lost in Oblivion Series by these clever wenches, you know they're good at the hot stuff. If you haven't read it, you should get right on that. So, back to "The Boss." Yum. He's Blake Carson, one of those professional, aloof types who are actually a sexual powder keg waiting to blow. I love those guys. Grace Copeland is an artist who has a bone to pick with him, but things don't go as expected when she goes to confront him. I'm seriously hooked and can't wait for the next part of this serial.

Definitely a series to sink your teeth into. Ends in a cliffhanger :( - wasn't expecting that! Taryn and Cari are amazing authors working together to keep their readers on the edge...

Grace Copeland's grandmother meant more to her than anything else in her life. And now that she's lost her, Grace is faced with losing her home, too, and she's not about to let that happen. As the new owner of the home that Grace loves, Blake Carson is just a nameless, faceless enemy, a man with plenty of money, but no heart. But Grace is not about to go down without a fight. Or, at least that's the plan. Because, when Grace walks into Blake’s company, Carson Covenant Glass, to negotiate some kind of deal to keep her home, it certainly wasn't with the idea that she'd end the day as Blake's personal assistant. Or that she’d feel the way that she does about him. Things are about to get very interesting...

Holy smokes, this book should come with a warning. Incendiary doesn't even begin to describe THE BOSS, the first book in the new Hot Billionaire serial series by authors Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott. As usual, these ladies have written a book that is equal parts immediately engaging characters and an engrossing and truly panty-melting storyline. Honestly, I started reading, and I did not want to stop, because I just loved everything about THE BOSS (and, yes, that absolutely DOES include the man himself!).

Serials sometimes get a bad rap because the books are short, and there are always cliffhanger endings to deal with, but, believe me, this is one that you'll want to grab. I tore through this read like nobody's business, and I cannot wait for Book 2 to see what happens next. It should come as no surprise that I'm giving THE BOSS 5+ stars; get it, read it. You'll thank me later!

The Quinn/Elliott collaboration has done it again! Set in Boston, The Boss Vol. 1 will have you hooked and salivating for more after only a few paragraphs. Grace and Blake are immediately likable and relatable. Quinn and Elliott are masters at creating characters with facets we all want to know. Pain, fear, dreams, successes and failures.

Grace Copeland once had jet setting parents with a lot of money, but no time for her. "Rescued" as a child by her grandmother and brought to live in an ocean side home filled with love, she's grieving her recent loss. Now she's also losing the only stable home she's ever known.

Enter Blake Carson. The enemy. The man who's purchased her home from the bank who foreclosed on it. She's gone to his company headquarters to confront him and ask to buy it back. Only to be stopped at the security desk and denied entrance.

Grace gains entrance by pretending she's there for an interview to be Blake's new assistant. She earns the position on a trial basis. The immediate chemistry between Blake and Grace is smoking hot. Trademark Quinn/Elliott. They leave you hot and bothered with visions of heated glances, roaming hands, disheveled clothing, and searing kisses.

And I do mean leave you...because also trademark Quinn/Elliott, there's a cliff hanger!

I can't wait for Vol. 2. I want more Grace and Blake.

The Boss is my first serial. Let me tell ya, there are no better authors to pop your serial-cherry than the fab writing duo of Quinn & Elliott. Come to think of it, their Lost in Oblivion series popped my rockstar-cherry. Hmmm. This might be becoming a thing.

My particular weakness is hunks in suits. Throw in billionaire and I’ll follow blindly wherever you want to lead me. This led me straight to a broody, sexy, always-in-control alpha; his independent, vocal, determined new assistant who has other motives besides wanting to fix him; and sexual tension that combusts into one of the hottest, most well-written sex scenes this duo has written. And that’s saying A LOT, because they write sexy like few others.

This was a cleverly written, quick, hot read with a bit of mystery that has me guessing plus extremely anxious for book two. It’s written from broody Blake’s POV, so it should be interesting indeed. Will he reveal the secrets I suspect he’s holding?

It was also a fun surprise to see some of the authors’ Lost In Oblivion characters play an integral part of this book. Anyone who hasn’t read that series will see them just as well-developed secondary characters. But for those familiar with the series it will be like catching up with old friends. I can’t wait to see how their roles play out in books 2-4.

It’s the start of a great series. Don’t miss it.

Update
I recently did a re-read of this book. Still awesome. Additional thoughts can be found here The Boss Vol. 1 by Taryn Elliott & Cari Quinn

Recently, I'm all about men in suits. Especially men in suits who have ink. So, The Boss Vol. 1 from Cari and Taryn entered my reading life at just the right moment :)

From the beginning, the lead characters - Blake Carson and Grace Copeland make an intriguing duo and their motives are not as obvious as you'd expect. I thought that Grace was going to confront Blake when she met him, but she didn't. I thought Blake was clueless about who Grace really was, but it could be that he's not. The anticipation to find out what's really up with the both of them makes this book a page turner for me.

I have to admit, I didn't quite take to the name Blake Carson though, it didn't sound to me like a name for a guy who has tattoos and likes to take charge but then, that's just me.

And since this is a novella, the end of this volume came all too quickly and at quite a pivotal moment too! I'd have given this 5 stars but prior to this book, I'd read another book about a boss and his unruly personal assistant which I felt was a little more sexy. Can't wait for The Boss Vol. 2 though!

Review for THE BOSS
I received this as a gift for an honest review.
If you have not read any of the books by Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott, I’m not sure what you are waiting for. They have a magic formula when it comes to the written word and this book proves that .
When Grace Copeland and Blake Carson cross into the same orbit they go supernova. Grace is a glass artist who is just coming out of her own personal hell caused by her grandmother’s death. She is determined to get her grandmother’s house back…from none other than Blake Carson. He is a self made billionaire who also works with and creates glass. This is where he made his fortune. When she is hired as his assistant…quite by accident…the fireworks start and then explode one night when they get locked in his building. When the smoke clears, neither one knows what just happened, but you can bet someone is going to try to figure it out. I, for one, plan to stick around and find the answer.

I can honestly say that I have NO IDEA what to think of this. On one hand, I know it's the beginning of a serial, so more things will happen and more things will be made clear as the serial progresses... But on the other hand... Is this worth pursuing??? I can't say that it hooked me in exactly. I mean, yes, I finished the book and I've stated the second one... But I don't know if it will hold me captive for very long.

The relationship between Blake and Grace seems really.. Sudden. There was no slow burn.. Or even instant sparks! She thought he was good looking. That's it!! Good looking then BAM!! it's on like Donkey Kong. It made no sense. It still doesn't (and as I said.. I'm into the 2nd book) but *shakes head* I. Just. Don't. Know!

Shame on me for being influenced by the hot guy on the cover!

These two authors can write one hot page turning book. Grace gets hired for a job in Blake's company under false pretenses. She needs answers from him and working as his assistant, she hopes to find them. Once they come face to face the sexual attraction is hot. Blake is an alpha billionaire boss, who meets his match with Grace the smart, determined artist turned assistant. This is a funny, sexy story with enough of unanswered questions that you can't wait to get your hands on the next volume.

I wasn't disappointed. The first volume of"The Boss" is tantalising; innuendos fly between Grace & Blake, the two protagonists and their encounter in the early hours is vivid. Usually I prefer to wait to read a serial in it's entirity, but this time I am delighted that I've read the Boss & can't wait to read Blake's POV & then the third vol.

Grace Copeland ends up with a job as assistant to billionaire Blake Carson when she goes to his office to discuss an issue with him buying her grandmother's house. Turns out she thrives as his assistant and there's some strong chemistry between these two.
Nice start to the story.
