Chloe Cook is back with another case to crack! A murderer strikes in Chloe Cook's hometown of Cape Cod. The victim is an arrogant former actor who has a bad habit of making of enemies. Now the local police detective suspects that Chloe's old friend Paige O'Doul is the killer. To prove Paige's innocence, Chloe has to take matters into her own hands and find the real killer herself.
Books In The Chloe Cook Series: Book 1 -- Mattress Mart Murder Book 2 -- Reunions Can Be Deadly
First I need to state that I got a free copy of this book for my honest review. Now that the business part is over, on to the actual review.
Reunions Can Be Deadly is the second book in the Chloe Cook series, just out from Kayla Michelle. The heroine, Chloe Cook, is a cosmetic salesman on Cape Cod who suddenly finds herself in the middle of a second murder case in as many months. In this second installment, the chief suspect in the murder is Paige O'Doul, who has been a friend of Chloe’s for a number of years. Paige is an actress who is back in town for a gig put on by the touring group she is a part of. As before, Chloe finds herself smack in the middle of the backstage drama going on between the members of the troupe just hours before the murder of disreputable Ryan Foster, brother to Adam Foster, one of the main actors in the troupe.
Spoiler alert: if you want to read the book for yourself and puzzle out the clues for yourself, stop here. Suffice it to say that it’s a good book, with plenty of twists and turns that is well worth the read.
After Chloe and new beau, Dylan (remember the podiatrist surgeon from Murder at the Mattress Mart?), attend the local performance of Paige' s murder mystery, Chloe is invited to attend the after-cast part being held at Adam Foster' s place.
At this point, we get to meet the chief suspects.
Adam Foster, brother to Ryan. Lily Foster, Adam's wife. Thanks to Adam's schedule at the hotel where he works when not acting, their marriage is in trouble. Things get worse when Lily announces that she is pregnant at the gathering, something that doesn't seem to make very Adam happy.
Next we have Sasha Irwin, host of a children's show, and one of the few from the acting troupe that was still in showbiz following Paige and the troupe' s college days.
Enter Ryan and erstwhile girlfriend, Olivia Ellerby. Rounding out the compliment is tough guy Eric Voss, seen tossing Ryan Foster over the hood of his car after being ejected from Adam and Lily' s home at the after show cast party.
Before being thrown out, Ryan confronts Sasha about some pictures, giving her until the following morning to do something that he wanted, or Ryan threatens to make the pictures public and ruining her career (although not explicitly stated, we know that Ryan is threatening Sasha with blackmail). Lily confronts Olivia about being back together with Ryan, Adam confronts Lily about still having feelings for Ryan, and even the good-natured Paige seems to bear ill feelings for Ryan.
The next morning, Chloe is once more summoned to the scene of the murder, and once again, she comes under the scrutiny of Detective Todd Thicke. Detective Thicke was none too happy that Chloe solved the murder of Marty Diamond in the previous book, The Mattress Mart Murder, and he seems doubly determined to keep Chloe from intruding in this present case.
At the lineup of suspects at the murder scene, it turns out that everyone but Chloe had a motive for wanting to see Ryan dead. She is the only one present to have a valid alibi for her whereabouts at the time Ryan was murdered. Most troubling for Chloe is the revelation that Paige was seen leaving Ryan's house at about the time Ryan was murdered. This was after Chloe had ostensibly dropped Paige off at her place after Lily abruptly ended the party and told everyone to leave.
I won't reveal the ending here, but suffice it to say that it's interesting to note that Chloe's faith in Paige is somewhat shaken when she realizes that Paige had enough reasons for wanting to see Ryan hurt, making her a legitimate suspect. This is not helped when it takes a bit for Paige to open up to Chloe and be honest about her actions on the night of the murder.
Although this case is not the automatic slam dunk with Chloe's faith in her friend that the first book was, the ending is satisfying, especially when Chloe is proven right. She is able to justify her feelings about Paige, even though she experienced the kind of doubts that would cause anyone in a similar situation to be having second thoughts.
This story is only marginally more explicit (still nothing overly bloody and detailed) than the Mattress Mart Murder, but I still feel confident in recommending the book both to Christian and younger audiences. This is second installment is a great addition to the series, and I think will make an engaging read for rainy days and lazy weekends, or for the younger generation, as a treat in between homework assignments.
I note with interest the between-the-lines lesson about posting everything about yourself in social media, something that too many people have failed to heed. There is no telling what can be learned from careless posts. It's bad enough what the government can get on someone, but anyone who really decides to look can get all sorts of details that you might not want to be public. Way to go, Kayla!
I am fully looking forward to the next installment, and will be waiting for the release, with a slice of my favorite pie in hand.
Reunions Can Be Deadly is a Chloe Cook Cozy Mystery by Kayla Michelle. It is a quick and easy as well as fun read. Chloe Cook gets herself into trouble by just being present. It seems as though Cape Cod is going to be notorious for murders than for the beach. She never intends to get into solving a murder; but it just happens. Chloe has just settled into a romantic relationship with a doctor and she is very happy with her life. She and Dylan Robertson are out for a dinner and a movie. Chloe’s oldest friend, Paige O’Doul is finally making her mark as an actress. She is playing the starring role in a play that is on a thirty-five city run. Chloe is so proud of her friend. Chloe isn’t as happy with the play as she is with Paige’s role. The play is a murder mystery and Chloe prides herself on being able to solve them; but she is totally wrong with this play. After the play, Dylan heads home as he has surgery in the morning, while Chloe goes to Adam Foster’s party with Paige. Instead of having a good time, the party turns tense when Adam’s brother, Ryan Foster, comes in uninvited. It seems Ryan brings trouble and tonight is no different. Before he leaves, he manages to make Adam, his wife Lily, a friend Sasha, and even his own girlfriend Olivia mad at him. As he leaves, he is approached by a man and thrown against the car after an argument. It seems he can’t win tonight. The next morning, Chloe is getting ready to take her dog to the dog park when two policemen come to the door. She is wanted for questioning about the murder of Ryan Foster. Luckily she has an alibi; but her friend Paige doesn’t. Chloe finds Paige is the number one suspect and she can’t let a friend be charged. Not when she knows Paige couldn’t have killed anyone. The police don’t see it that was so Chloe has to find the killer. Although the Cozy Mysteries are predictable, they are still fun to read. It is fun to try to figure out the killers before Chloe does. After all, you have the same clues she does.
Chloe Cook is destined to be a sleuth. Once again she's involved in a murder investigation. When her friend Paige is the main suspect in the death of Ryan Foster, she's determined to find the killer. Ryan made enemies easily. He was a scheming opportunist and womanizer. Now that he's been murdered, the police have put Paige at the top of the list. Chloe isn't going to let that happen. Can she find who killed Ryan? I like Chloe's dedication to her friends. She is thorough, intelligent and doesn't let herself get distracted. She isn't afraid. What spunk! Reunions Can Be Deadly is a quick and entertaining read. It's enjoyable from start to finish. Cape Cod is a beautiful setting for murder and deceit. Kayla Michelle creates interesting and devious characters who add surprising twists and turns to this cozy mystery. I like Chloe and her romance with Dylan is the icing on the cake. I'm looking forward to her next adventure!
Disclosure: I received this book free of charge from the publisher. This review is my honest opinion, and is in no way influenced by the author or publisher.
I am really enjoying this series. I fell in love with the characters right from the start. I am sure I will read this one at least a couple more times.
Enjoyed sitting on cool Fall evening reading this book. Loved how the author made a murder mystery with characters that you grow to love as well as to yearning the need to find out what happens! This is going to be a great mystery series to set you cool nights up..
enjoyed getting to know a new character in a series (this is first I read need to backtrack) Chole has a list of suspects to go through to find out who the real killer is , her friend has been accused of the crime and the detective on the case will not take her off , Chole is a Amature sleuth but a strong character with good sense of clues to find the real suspect .
Deadly Resentment is a simple, clean murder mystery that makes for a pleasant diversion.
Deadly Resentment tells the story of a man killed after a party, and Chloe’s actor friend is the chief suspect. Chloe goes around asking people questions until she figures out.
I listened to this as part of a two book audio bundle.
The narrator of the audiobook does a decent job with the stories and seems to suit the main character. Her voices for other characters aren’t the greatest though.
There are a few spots in the audiobook where text gets repeated, so the audiobook could benefit from a little editing.
I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Chloe may only bean amateur sleuth but she’s good at getting the job done. Unfortunately one of her friends is accused. She needs to find the truth as quickly as possible before there’s another murder. Intriguing to the end.
Deadly Resentment (Chloe Cook #2), my second read/listen from author Kayla Michelle, although I own several of her books I’d never gotten around to reading one until I read Mattress Mart Murder. A cute, well-written clean cozy mystery. Since I own both the Kindle & Audible editions I was able to follow along while being read to as my wife listened along. Narrator Renee Dorian Begley's vocal talents added to the enjoyment. I look forward to reading Killer Finale (Chloe Cook #3). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Format: audiobook Although this is an enjoyable story it is the same format as another story in this set and in too many places it’s word for word copied and pasted with just names changed which is disappointing. The narrator is good but there are at least two occasions when a line is repeated.
When Ryan Foster is murdered and Chloe Cook's friend Paige is the prime suspect, Chloe has to find the real killer to prove her friend's innocence. This isn't the first murder Chloe has investigated so, even though she is a cosmetic saleswoman, she has experience with solving murders. You can imagine the reaction of Detective Thicke when Chloe tells him that his suspect (her friend) is innocent and she's going to prove it. He's not happy about it, especially since Chloe has solved murders before.
This is a fun story (even though it is about a murder) and the writing is smooth making it easy to read and follow the plot. You have to love Chloe's determination to be a good friend by proving Paige's innocence. She clearly is not experienced at sleuthing which showed in her lack of investigative and questioning skills. But you've got to give her points for trying.
I really like Kayla Michelle's writing style so I'm glad to have received a copy of this book to review. If you like cozy mysteries, you should read Reunions can be Deadly.
This was a fun easy to listen to cozy mystery and being a two book bundle it lasts twice as long. The stories were very similar but it means you know what to expect and enjoy. The mysteries aren't to taxing on the brain and it is easy to pick back up if you have to stop listening, making them great for long or short car rides. The characters are likeable but don't listen to the story of you are hungry as they do like there food.
Deadly Resentment Chloe's old friend Paige O'Doul's acting troupe comes to town to put on a show. Which is a success until somebody is killed at the after party. The murder weapon is the prop used in the show pointing the police in the direction of Paige, as she was the killer on stage. Is this a case of life imitating art? Chloe won't let that happen as against advice and a warning from the police she starts investergating. Killer Finale A girls night out for Chloe and her best friend goes horrible wrong before it can even start, as Chloe' friend is running late and Chloe goes to her place of work to pick her up, only to find the comedy-club owner is having a bad day so all her employees are to and the fun night out planned is cancelled. The next day Chloe wakes up to the news the owner is dead and despite all the other people she argued with Chloe's friend once again is the prime suspect. Can Chloe solve the third murder to happen in her sleepily town before her friend is arrested? I liked the narrator but the editing needed a bit of work, a few times she repeats a short sentence. It doesn't affect the story or the enjoyment,
Cape Cod had always been an enjoyable and safe place to live, even with the influx of tourists. Chloe finally met a boyfriend she knew her mother would approve of -- she had turned him down when her mother had tried to set them up, only to meet Dylan on her own.
Chloe has always had lots of friends, and some had gone on to successful careers. Paige O'Doul was finding success on the stage. When her play was touring, she invited Chloe to the local performance. It was all very exciting. Chloe went along with Paige to the after party. There was plenty of excitement there too. The next morning, a knock on her door lets Chloe know something happened after she left the party. Someone there may be a killer.
When the evidence begins to point at Paige, Chloe can't help but do her own investigation. Can she clear her friend when the police seem to wrap this case up quickly?
A quick breezy cozy read. I did receive this book in exchange for review.
Reunions can be Deadly is the second book in the Chloe Cook series. Chloe Cook is a Cosmetic Sales women on Cape Cod she finds herself once again in the middle of a second murder case. The Cheif suspect is Paige O'Doul. Paige aand Chloe have been friends for years .Paige is an actress she is in town for a play her touring group is putting on. Chloe finds herself stuck in the middle of the Back stage drama going on before the Troupe members just hours before the murder of Ryan Foster who is one of the main actors. The Police come to question Chloe about the murder she has an alibi but Paige doesn't suddenly Paige is the number one suspect it is up to Chloe to find the real killer and prove Paige's innocence.
Chloe Cook finds herself once again trying to find a killer to save her friend from being accused of murder.
Chloe attends a play in which an old friend is performing in where she happens to be the murder. After the play, she is invited to a party where things get out of hand and the party is cut short.
Next morning Chloe has policemen knocking on her door asking her whereabouts following the party. Turns out there is a murdered body found of the unexpected guest at the party and the murder weapon is the same as the one in the play which makes her friend looks like the prime suspect?
Once again it is up to Chloe to find the real killer. A nice quick read that flows.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries and dogs these books are a nice choice. I prefered the second novel to the first. If you have kids I would not recommed listening to the first book with your children due to affairs and a little more adult content (although, it is not graphic.) I would just leave that up to the parent. The second story kind of reminds me of the Nancy Drew movie with Emma Roberts and acting etc. If you like quick (about 2.5 hours each) and cute mysteries this is a good fit. Reminds me of some of the Hallmark movies and mysteries. Not super graphic but still exciting. I really like the narrators voice. She talks fast (even for me.) Which I did like. I was not put to sleep. I received this audiobook at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
Continue to enjoy Chloe Cook's adventures. This time, Paige O'Doul, Chloe's long-time friend is on the Cape portraying the lead actress in a role of her lifetime. She play a distraught wife who has taken enough and ends up killing her husband. On closing night Paige asks Chloe to join her at the cast party. Of course, "murder is served" the day after the party. Detective Thicke once again begins his investigation of the murder, and not only Paige, but Chloe and all the other main party-goers as suspects. What ensues is a clever little story where Chloe once agains gets her man or is the murderer actually a woman.
Audible:This was a good ,short cozy mystery. If you don't want to have to think too much, this book is for you.Chloes bff is making her big break on stage.Life soon takes a turn in the same direction and Chloe is left to figure out who murdered one of the theater gang.Renee Dorian Begley is a good narrator though I do think she needs to look up words she may not know. They were quite obvious, especially in the beginning of the book.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
This is a clean short mystery where her friend is accused of murder. Chloe starts her hunt to find the murderer. It is a book in the Chloe Cook Cozy Mystery series and they follow the same theme. The characters are believable and interesting. There are many suspects without alibis. She has to find the murderer to clear her friend. The narration is good and keeps you focused. It draws you in and leaves you wznting more. This is a good fast book that you can finish without feeling guilty of not staying on task. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Chloe Cook is at it again with her 2 book set with Killer Resentment and Killer Finali. The books both take place in Cape Cod. Chloe as an amateur sleuth. She wants to help find the murderers of her friends. Detective Todd Thicke warns her to keep out of the investigation. She continues to investigate. She goes deep into the investigating asking the right questions. There are people without alibis and those who lie. Does she solve the murder or does she get in the way. The narration it good, the characters are believable and it will keep your interest. I recommend this book.
Chloe Cook is a cosmetic saleswoman who has a knack for being a sleuth. This is the second book in the Chloe Cook Cozy Mystery series. Chloe goes to a friend's play with her doctor boyfriend. After the play she goes to a party with her friend and that's where the action starts. I recommend this book and all the cozy books Kayla Michelle has written under the names K. M. Morgan and Bridget Bowman.
When her best friend is accused of the murder of a local low-life, Chloe swings into action to find the real killer, much to the chagrin of the local police. This is a well plotted mystery with plenty of likely though mostly unlikable suspects and heroine who is fun to follow through her investigations. The audio version has a few bad edits (repeated lines) but the book is very well read. At 2.5 hrs, it's a perfect read for a lazy afternoon or a quick trip out of town

A truly sweet cozy, if murder can be sweet. Totally unbelievable, but a nice break from down and out gory murder stories. Less than three hours long, it leaves you with an upbeat feeling. The murder of the renegade brother of a couple facing possible divorce, a TV celebrity with a past to him, and host of friends from college that don't like the victim keeps you guessing until the end. I was gifted this from the author.
This felt very amateurish and far fetched. The investigation consisted of talking to all the suspects and then she solves the mystery. Not very believable. The dialog was pretty simple. It was a clean read, but it reads like a novella instead of a book. I can't recommend reading this. It was a good idea, but just fell short on execution.
Very simple Murder book. Uninteresting. I do not recommend if you are a mystery/murder lover. I struggle with this book often skipping through several pages hoping it would get better. It didn't so I finally gave up on it. This was part of a two set deal. I had hoped the second book would be better than the first. It wasn't.
I received this free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second in the Chloe series of cozy mysteries. It's very much like the first in that there is no violence other than the initial murder and that the reader is given all of the clues to solve the mystery. Fun, quick read.
Deadly Resentment was another great read by Kayla Michelle. There is another murder on Cape Cod and Chloe Cook is looking into who the killer is. There are many suspects including one of Chloe's good friends. Chloe must find out who the killer is in order to clear her friends name. I can't wait to read more by Kayla Michelle.
