Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
I read Joy in Christ's Presence as part of a group readalong with some lovely ladies and I am so glad they chose this book for the non-fiction November read. This book has been highlighted, written in - and in my top 5 of the year. It left such an impact on me. It was my first Spurgeon read too and I love the way he wrote and explained things. This is a timeless masterpiece that will continue to resonate with readers today and will offer a profound exploration of the joy that stems from a close walk with Christ. Spurgeon's rich theological insights and engaging writing style make this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper, more joyful connection with Jesus.
What more can I say? Any believer in any season of their faith walk will find themselves captivated by Spurgeon's words and inspired to deepen their relationship with the Lord.
Be ready for the tears when you pick this up - so beautiful!
This book made a significant impact in my heart, my mind and my life. I thank the Lord for this book. Although written in the Victorian era it is accessible. Truly the Lord breaths life into the book and for all those who read it they too will be stired up and transformed. This book is my favorite book of 2023.
This book was so special. Spurgeon's writing is beautiful and poignant. It came at the perfect time, when I truly needed a refreshing of my soul. I'm so grateful for this book. It's one I'll return to time and again.
This book!!! Wow! The way Spurgeon phrases things we already know as Christians! He puts it into words that just make you want to get up and have a praise and worship service! It just makes you feel so overwhelmed and full of joy that you want to shout from the rooftops how good God is and how much love Christ has for us and we for Him!
"Dear Reader, we preach Christ crucified because we have been saved by Christ crucified. His death is the death of our sins. We can never give up the doctrine of Christ's substitutionary sacrifice, for it is the power by which we hope to be made holy. Not only are we washed from guilt in His blood, but by that blood we also overcome sin. "
In this book, Spurgeon expounds upon different Bible verses and writes reflective passages/sermons surrounding the chosen verse. I always find Spurgeon’s commentary to be profound, and many passages in this book have been life-changing and enlightening for me. This book has inspired me to treasure my relationship with Christ, even through the mundanity and hardships of life. It reminded me how beautiful and amazing it is to belong to Jesus. Reading this book has enriched my spiritual life greatly. I also just so appreciate Spurgeon’s perspectives. Highly recommend!
Wonderful excerpts from Spurgeon here! Most of these portions focus on an intimate relationship with Christ. The selections weren't too unified, but I did appreciate and learn from them all.
There were two instances I had a small contention. First, Spurgeon in the first excerpts seems to imply that we are to seek spiritual "experiences" of Christ's presence. I did not see his support for these conclusions to be adequate from a scriptural perspective. For the Song of Songs, I'm not sure his hermeneutic was 100% accurate because he failed to mention what the passage would have meant to the original writer/audience and simply expounded what it signifies about Christ and the church.
Lastly, whoever the publisher was for this seems to promote Spurgeon on the back of the book like the health and wealth gospel, which was totally misleading! Here's part of it "Real contact with Jesus. ...Healing for your body, God's fulfillment of your needs... protection if God, total freedom from fear." All of these only partially capture what was actually discussed in the book. Half-truths at best, purposely misleading at worst.
The content of the book was FAR from the health and wealth false gospel, but the cover of the book really messed it up on this one! Spurgeon probably would have had a bit to say about the cover ...
I picked up this book at a second-hand bookstore in Johannesburg, South Africa. I had to fix it myself as it was falling apart. It is that old. Yet, it doesn't seem to have been read before. I could see no proof that its pages were ever turned. I am reading this book now; I'm just about to start reading chapter 9. This book is helping me so much on my faith journey. I am a new believer (I have always believed in Christ but never followed Him). This book is a gem and I can't wait to get more of Charles Spurgeon's books. He was a true disciple and teacher of the Word that brings life, and I thank God for leading me into that bookstore when He did.
I think I could give this book a higher rating, but I won’t because though it was really good. There were a lot of areas that didn’t seem to say much. That being said there was always a few really good quotes in each chapter. I did really enjoy the book, and it has been helpful in thinking about how to rest in Jesus more, better, and in different aspects of Him. It’s Spurgeon, so of course it is good.
I took my time with this beautiful book. It is filled with lyrical writing that just speaks about our personal relationship with Christ in such an emotional and vital way. If you are looking for encouragement and a practical reminder of how to walk with Christ in every season of life, this is a must read. Savor it and let it just wash over you with the truths from God’s word.
Stopping early. Spurgeon apparently thought Song of Solomon was a total allegory, and I don't, so each chapter was a bit aggravating. I love how he writes, though, so I need to find more books by him. This is the only one I own.
What a thorough look at Jesus and why we love Him so. This book will remind you of His perfect love that secured a place for you in His book of life. It is exhaustive and produces a joy that is unfading.
