Film music geeks - of which appellation I do claim - will find much to like about this book, but it also has a lot to offer to film fans or those whose interest in music is merely casual. First of all, it's a nirvana for Jerry Goldsmith fans as a thorough examination of one of his landmark scores, broken down cue by cue, and explained in a way that's very accessible and understandable to those who do not possess a music degree (though NOT 'dumbed down' in any way); secondly, fans of the APES series will also appreciate the degree of research that has gone into this, as O'Callaghan goes through the history of the making of PLANET OF THE APES from Boulle's original novel, to acquisition of the film rights by Arthur P. Jacobs and its evolution to finished film; also briefly noting the sequels and their music.
There are also quite a few bombshells dropped that should spark some debates on discussion boards.

This deserves to be an essential part of any film/film music library; the first printing has sold out, but look for a second printing/digital version to come. I also hope that this won't be the last book by John O'Callaghan that we'll be reading.
