Embark on a fascinating journey into Revelstoke, Canada, a world-renowned ski destination with a well-kept secret: it has a long and active paranormal history just as breathtaking as its mountain views. Packed with stories of hauntings, UFOs, Sasquatch, missing time, and much more, A Strange Little Place takes you into a small town full of thrilling secrets and bizarre encounters.
Chronicling over seventy years of unusual occurrences in his hometown, Brennan Storr provides exciting, first-hand accounts of unexplainable phenomena. Discover the sinister mysteries of Rogers Pass, the strange craft and spectral music of the Arrow Lakes, and generations of hauntings in the infamous Holten House. As a magnet for the supernatural, Revelstoke invites you to experience things you never thought possible.
Whether you believe or not, it certainly tickles your curiosity. I get a kick out of discussions between people who swear by science, and others with a spiritual bend because everyone can agree they just aren't sure and can't quite get to the bottom of things. Ghost stories, UFOs- this is fun stuff. We like to be spooked, we like the unknown, it's a nice escape... unless maybe you're being abducted or living in a haunted house... ah well- joking aside... I have to admit, there is something interesting about children seeing people that aren't there only to find out the description sure sounds like someone who once lived. Every town (for the most part) has their ghost stories and haunts. Many places have UFO sightings or strange creatures and personally I think there is something fun in not knowing, skeptic or believer. These stories were interesting, some sweet, some scary others sad. I always find stories of ghosts seen standing by highways or reoccurring sightings of the dead in certain places fascinating. I have heard first hand accounts everywhere I have lived of hauntings and ghosts, and despite spiritual beliefs of other cultures, there seems to be a common thread when it comes to the dead. Food for thought. Most people can remember strange encounters or even just surreal dreams? It's always a real conversation starter. While there are people that scoff at the paranormal, I have always found even skeptics get caught up in the confessions and stories people have of things they just can't explain. I admit, I love such conversations. Enjoyed this book.
A Strange Little Place is the kind of book I've not read in a long time. When I was (a lot) younger I used to have a particular fascination with UFO stories based on actual events. A book called The Pennine UFO Mystery by Jenny Randles started off a period of me reading these kind of books heavily and produced a lifelong interest in the paranormal. I may often be skeptical, but that's doesn't dim my interest one bit. It's nice to be back on familiar ground with A Strange Little place. The premise of the book, that being stories of the paranormal variety from the town of Revelstoke, Canada piqued my interest immediately, as the stories give a look into life of this small tow, as much as it does for paranormal events. This book speaks volumes of the oral history of this isolated but beautiful area.
A Strange Little Place starts with the history of the area. The author made this history both interesting and engaging. It set the scene well for the following paranormal and ghost stories.
So what do I think of A Strange Little Place?
One of the first things that popped into my mind whilst reading this book was that I loved the authors "voice". Brennan Storr has a great storytelling ability. It honestly felt like I was sat round a camp fire being told these stories by a really great storyteller. The kind that everyone stops what they are doing and listen in silence to.
The book contains many pictures of the places and buildings described in the stories. This was a really nice touch and allowed the stories to come alive visually. The stories are for the most part short and sweet. There are no embellishments, and it's refreshing that Brennan Storr doesn't feel the need to push his own beliefs and theories down your throat.
A Strange Little Place has been a genuine pleasure to read. Those that enjoy a well researched collection of paranormal will find this book a real treat. 4 stars.
***Disclaimer- I was given this book by Netgalley and Llewelyn Worldwide Ltd in exchange for an honest review. This is that review!***
I want to visit Revelstoke. Right now, please. While UFO’s usually aren’t my thing, the author had a great way of describing what was happening, along with witness testimony and background info. I also loved the accounts of paranormal happenings. It’s obvious the author’s research took up a lot of time, but it makes the book all the better for it.
It was interesting andnhad some fun stories. Would be nice to have more history of the town and also the history behind different apparitions. Over enjoyed though!
Others might find this interesting, so long as they're able to keep any critical inquiry suspended. There were so many logical flaws in the reasoning. The one that bothered me the most had to do with the "eye-witness" accounts. There are multiple reasons why someone might not want to give their name when acting as witness. It could be that they don't want their name to be put down because they know they're just making up tales. Or maybe they themselves don't find their own story reliable. The point being, when most of the accounts are given by people who don't want their names revealed, it points to the illegitimacy of the entire accounting process. Sure, I'd understand if one or two were too embarrassed to be associated with "paranormal" tales. But most of these accounts were by eye-witnesses who didn't want to give their names. It made me think the whole book was fabricated to sell copies. Which is fine. Just call it fiction.
This book seem designed to satisfy believers who will believe anyway.
A Strange Little Place: The Hauntings & Unexplained Events of One Small Town written by Brennan Storr was an enjoyable read. To be honest I never knew about this book until just recently when I went out to visit my parents, my mother told me I had to read this. This book actually is about my hometown I grew up in and so I was familiar with some of the tales and the areas talked about here in this book. It was refreshing to hear these stories again and ones from all over the city with a few even I haven't heard before. Now with that being said this isn't your regular ghost story book. It happens to be about a bunch of tales from townsfolk who have either witnessed or experienced odd events or closely knew the people that had experienced such occurrences happen. With the area being rich in historical events and small in population, it's not uncommon for stories like these to circulate and become popular over the years.
The book was not what I was expecting. I had expected a story that told of ghosts in a town, like zombies, that were impacting something and had to be handled like a story. This was not that. This was a collection of accounts that happen in Revelstoke over generations.
The author is fair and non-judgemental and the view of the reader is as unbiased as he can make it.
Had I known what it was when I bought it, I probably would not have bothered, but I am not upset to have read these stories.
If this is what you are looking for, you are really going to enjoy the book, if you're looking for a story then put this back on the shelf.
This was a collection of strange and unusual occurrences in Revelstroke Canada. Cryptically, ghosts, gremlins, strange lights, UFOs and more have been seen in the area. This book is a collections of short stories relating some of the events. The chapters and stories are fairly short. The author narrates his work. These happenings would be of note, but the fact that so many occur in this particular area, makes it a rare hot spot for the paranormal. Highly entertaining and somewhat spooky.
I'm not really into ghost stories, hauntings, UFO's or any of that, however, I found this book to be kind of a fun, easy read about a cool little town in Canada. I wouldn't mind visiting Revelstoke to see some of these places. And I think Brennan did a good job researching and organizing the information he collected in this book. Now I'm interested in checking out his podcast, Ghost Story Guys.
Brennan certainly writes well, I'd read anything he chose to put down on paper (much the same way I feel about his voice). In these pages he gives me both a look into a part of the continent I've never visited, and a healthy amount of intriguing stories to wrap my brain around. Revelstoke sounds like a strange little place that I would love to visit someday.
worth getting on audiobook - as someone who listens to the podcast, having Brennan's voice reading out all the stories gives the impression of an extra-long episode.
clearly a lot of thought and work has gone into this collection of tales and experiences, and it makes for a fascinating listen/read wherever you fall on the "to believe or not to believe" scale
A fun little read about the many things that happen in one town. It covers a lot of small stories, like people sharing whispers of their own experiences. It's interesting to think of what is out there.
A collection of accounts of paranormal happenings in the Canadian town of Revelstoke. I wonder if every town has a series of stories like this if you look hard enough. It’s a good idea, I think, to record them; like modern folklore.
An interesting and comprehensive collection of ghost stories from this iconic little town. Storr tells a good tale and provides loads of fascinating accounts.
Absolutely loved this book--well-rendered, fascinating stories told with just the right balance of respect and skepticism. Appreciated the historical context as well. Bravo!!
Being a big fan of The Ghost Story Guys, I really loved having Brennan Storr narrating in my mind as I read. I really liked the order of the stories and commentary mixed in.
I got both the kindle and paperback versions of Strange after listen to The Ghost Story Guys for a while. The flow of Strange is different than any other collection of ghost stories that I’ve read before and Brennan adds just enough of himself to make the stories feel familiar to GSG fans. I enjoyed learning more about a little (and strange lol) Canadian town, though I can also tell this format of paranormal stories may not be for everyone. If you prefer the anthologies with stories meant to scare, this isn’t for you. More than just ghost stories, A Strange Little place is like stopping overnight in a tiny town in the middle of a long road trip and being filled with unease until you leave the next morning.
A Strange Little Place is a great read for what it is. The book contains stories of paranormal and strange happenings in and around Revelstoke, B.C. and it runs the gamut - everything from spectres to ufo’s to Sasquatch.
It doesn’t feel like the most driven story, or like all the stories necessarily tie in together and that’s alright because Storr never seems to try to push a narrative on you or jam long winded passages down your throat. It is clearly written by a man who is a skeptic and I can surely appreciate this as it actually lends more validity to the collection.
I will also let you know that the author has an EXCELLENT podcast called The Ghost Story Guys that tends to cover many of these topics and is absolutely fantastic.
Rating 3/5 stars, would give 3.5 if I could. Entertaining read, well written and paced!
This is a very straightforward kind of book. The author wastes no time getting into the weird occurrences and paranormal events in the small Canadian town of Revelstoke. I liked that there were pictures of some of the locations included, as I felt that went a distance to making me feel like I was there and could better understand what the author was talking about.
I didn't feel that the author was trying to be overly persuasive, or force the reader to agree with his standpoint, merely that he had something to say and did the best job he could to accurately report the things that had been said to him as well as recount his own experiences. This book is not terribly long, but it is well written and interesting.
If you have an interest in the paranormal, this book will probably give you something to consider. I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy reading real accounts of strange happenings.
This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Okay, let me put this out there before I continue with this review: I'm a scaredy cat, and some of the various tales of hauntings, UFOs etc, had me freaked out. The fact that they are tales the author has gathered from reputable sources around the town of Revelstoke, scared me all the more. There was some historical bumf to give background, and not all the stories were like typical ghost stories, some were actually quiet nice. It wasn't a book set out to scare you, more to delve into the mystery of Revelstoke. If you live in the area, or know the area, then this may be more appealing to you.
It's not my normal type of read and took me a little while to get into it, but the author has done a good job of retelling the tales to add to the mystery. There are some unique stories, and some situations that I found hard to believe, but as the author states, he is not out to make the reader believe.
A good deal of research would have gone into this book. If you like to read some mysterious, freaky, unexplanable real life stories, then this is the book for you. It was a fun, easy read.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to become more interested in the fact-based side of the true ghost story genre. A shivery tale is all well and good, but when you can back people’s experiences with the history of a location it becomes something even better. In this book, Brennan Storr focuses his attention on one place - Revelstoke, British Columbia. This small town seems to have an unusual amount of supernatural activity, and Storr gives us plenty of personal interviews and historical info. It’s really well-written, and while none of it is going to make you pee your pants, it’s an interesting look at - yeah, I’m gonna do it!! - a strange little place.
I applaud Mr. Storr's dedication and depth of research. Actually a 3.5 rating if I could. He has a knack for connecting with people and it shows on the page. Loved that the stories were so varied and was easy to pick up and put down when I could only spare an hour here or there. A little dry/heavy on the historical descriptions though. I'm still going to recommend to friends as a Halloween read!
Thank you to Netgally for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not really a fan of UFO's but love the paranormal stuff, this is an entertaining and informative book that I loved dipping into rather than reading it straight through.
Read when I was curled up in bed before I went to sleep, I love to read creepy before bed.
*Huge thanks to Brennan Storr, Llewellyn Worldwide Ltd and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review*
I love paranormal tales. These accounts really gave me the creeps and the photos are a very nice touch. I had to go and look for my dog and close the drapes. Sometimes the simplest stories of just seeing something and the manner they are told will give you chills. Note: I received a digital copy free for review purposes.
A collection of short stories that gave me chill when reading alone at night. Now I want to travel the road that leads to Revelstoke. A little bit of ghost, aliens, Sasquatch, but strangely all fit together without being too foolish.
