Roxie Munro has been an artist from the age of six, when she won first prize in a county-wide contest for a painting of a bowl of fruit. She has supported herself all her life on her art, at one point freelancing in Washington DC as a television courtroom artist. Clients included CBS, the Washington Post, and the Associated Press. Fourteen of her paintings have been published as covers of "The New Yorker" magazine.

She creates oils, watercolors, prints, and drawings, primarily cityscapes, which are exhibited widely in the US in galleries and museums. Roxie's work is in numerous private, public, and corporate collections.
Roxie Munro studied at the University of Maryland, the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore), received a BFA in Painting from the University of Hawaii, attended graduate school at Ohio University (Athens), and received a Yaddo Fellowship. She lectures in museums, schools, conventions, and teaches watercolor on ships, workshops, and in the Paint in Italy program.
Many of her paintings are views from the roof of her sky-lighted loft studio in Long Island City, just across the East River from her home in mid-Manhattan. Roxie is married to the Swedish writer/photographer, Bo Zaunders.
Munro takes us both outside and inside all the sights of New York. I marvel at the detail of her pictures. How long does it take her to draw such pictures? I love how she weaves inside and outside all the cool places in the city. A great introduction to New York City.
This nonfiction book was intended for ages 6 to 8yrs old; unfortunately, it did not win any literacy awards. The Inside-outside Book of New York City by Roxie Munro is a book with pictures of New York City. I believe this book deserves a 4-star rating because although pictures can help children learn, a little more explanation with words can be useful too. For instance, I think if the book included what each building or place does, and maybe a few background pointers. Besides lack of idea and purpose, the illustrations are nice. The illustrations show how big the city is, the amount of people there in New York, specifying locations and different places to visit. They also paint a picture of a normal setting in any other city, this one is just overpopulated. If I could give one theme for this book, it would be adventure, since it's a big city with lots of places to visit with family and friends. I think this book would be appealing for young readers because they love pictures and they can learn a lot from just the illustrations, and not just the word choice.
What a take on New York's architecture! If Roxie Munro's images don't let you fall in love with New York, nothing will. Moods travel by color, unusual vantage points put the city in a different light. A real beauty of a book!
Great artwork. Features iconic New York places that we looked at more of online. The outside view followed by the inside view is fun. Pre-9/11 book, so it includes scene with the World Trade Center. A was into it, but not enough to want to read it again and again.
Notes: wordless one spread shows outside of a famous place; following spread shows inside-looking-out view fascinatingly detailed art index with some history on the locations
I LOVE THESE BOOKS! It takes students on an illustrated field trip through different cities. It lets them view iconic places as if they were there. Recommended for primary and intermediate students.
