Rate this book
Marcus is the latest star at an athletically prestigious Baltimore high school. In the fall, he starts at running back on the varsity football team and in the winter, he starts at shooting guard for the varsity basketball team. He has his pick of a Division I scholarship in either of the two sports. But when Marcus gets in a bad fight with a white player at a preseason basketball tournament, racial tensions start to run high. Will Marcus be consumed by his anger? Baltimore is a book from Hoop City, an EPIC Press six set series. Each EPIC Press series is made up of 6 short installments, intended for readers 14 and older.

hoop city is a good description of what happens in the streets of baltimore. it shows how characters overcame hardships throughout his carreer and a death of a close friend. hoop city shows us how one word can result in alot of damage physically and mentally. in the book the main charater marcus had overcome many altercations to succeed. this book deserves a 5 star rating beacause it is a well stuctured book that keeps you intrested and alert. thoughout the book it constantly has on your toes, ready for whats next in the book. on the other side i think that they shouldve went deeper describing the characters. for slower readers this is the ideal sports book that student athlets read. on another note the book has an abundance of cursing throughout, if you are one to get offended, its not for you. overall this a very good, fast paced sports book that is suited for middle/high school students.

In the book Hoop City, Darnell is a two sport athlete and is very talented at both football and basketball. Currently in football season, Darnell takes his team to the state championship until he makes a crucial mistake that leads to a low life of living dangerously.

If you like sports and ever struggled in sports and at home you will enjoy this book.
Darnell is a very talented guy, he has no father figure in his life. Even though he didn't have a father figure, he had a coach that gave him great guidance. The coach guided him through his rough patch of his life and the coach took him under his wing.

I liked the story telling because it felt like it would be a real life problem not just make it up for the book. My favorite part was ‘I knew I was gonna carry my team’ (39). I think others would like this book if there was more action in the book.

This book captures a very realistic situation where his family doesn't have a lot of money but his skill to play can get him a scholarship and his family some money in the future. So, with that he has to overcome the adversity of living with very unique people and also avoid them. He also learns a lot about himself and his anger issues which, in all brings a very good book together.

the book does a good job of explaining the players inspiration and past along with how he develops throughout his story it is a very interesting book the whole way through and stays on topic through the whole book and even shows how he solves the murder of one of his childhood friend. all in all it is a very good book and the only complaint I have is it is a little short.

I have to say, I am enjoying this series so far. I love that each book in the series is separate, but still on the same theme- You can overcome hardships. I also liked that this book addressed some racial slurs. Great book, but still debating if it's okay for middle school... maybe the more mature students.

Marcus is the star of his football team and a starter on the basketball team at a very athletic high school in Baltimore and his future to play in college and the pros is looking really good until the state championship football game. A player on the other team made a racial slur to him which resulted into a huge fight causing him to be suspended. He knew that this could've cost him a full ride Division I scholarship, but chooses not to think about that and try to find out who his childhood friends killer is.

Hoop City Baltimore shows us how to overcome hardships and allows people to realize how one word can result into a lot of damage. Many people who are involved in sports would enjoy this book because it shows the hardships of life and how to handle certain situations. I would rate this book 5 stars because it was very interesting and didn't drift off of the main point ever and really kept you on your toes the whole book.

Marcus plays football and basketball for his prestigious high school in Baltimore. However, a racial slur resulting in a fight during a football game may cancel out his hopes of playing basketball this year.

With almost 200 pages to work with, I felt like there should have been greater depth, especially depth of character. However, struggling and/or reluctant readers as well as those who like their sports stories with a tang of urban grit to them will enjoy the story. I was also distressed by the lack of grammatical editing in several places. I doubt that will bother most students, however.
