Leggere …quadri!
How on earth can you write a book about Chagall and ignore his Judaism?, when it was so important to him and such a vital theme in his artwork? The book mentions the churches in his hometown yet erases his Judaism? What on earth? I was looking for a specific, wonderful children's book on Chagall that I saw at an art gallery a few years ago. This was, decidedly, not it.
This is the first Adventures in Art book that I've read, and I'm impressed. Prestel-Verlag have done an amazing service to people of all ages with their release of the series.
The story of Marc Chagall's art (at least his better known works) is told wonderfully by Brigitta Höpler with the assistance of the team who put together the wonderful outlay of the text. The copy is colourful and adds depth to the story behind the paintings. And the translation by Catherine McCreadie does the English speaking world a huge service.
People of all age will enjoy this short and sweet interpretation of Chagall's art and life.
Every painting by Chagall depicts a dream or a memory, his head was always filled with the images of his village in Russia, of the houses, the people, and the animals - no matter where he happened to be living at the time, or his love for France. This is such a cute book, which can also be used as an introductory art for kids.
