Lipsi's Daughter

Rate this book
This Cinderella-type story begins on the Greek Island of Lipsi, where Ipatia, an orphaned girl, lives with her grandfather. Intelligent, beautiful Ipatia is bent on pursuing a college education. She makes plans to attend the university in Piraeus and to live there with her aunt. The day before her trip she literally falls into the arms of Tony Plakis, a rich ship-owner’s son, who saves her from a snake in the tree. In her hasty departure from the young man’s arms, she drops behind an English novel she was reading. Tony discovers the book and this causes a sequence of events that draw the couple even closer. However, complications accost them every step of the way. Tony’s best friend, Doctor Michael, falls for Ipatia, and Tony’s own father wants him to marry an heiress. To make matters worse, an accident separates the couple. Through a misunderstanding, Ipatia leaves for America, wanting nothing to do with Tony. Tony battles with amnesia, a result from the accident, trying to recover his life. Will he remember his true love, Ipatia? Will Ipatia’s love be strong enough to overcome the test of time?

Ipatia's Choice

Lipsi’s Daughter gives us a picture of what life in Greece was like at the end of the 20th century for a girl raised in a family with conservative values. Ipatia conforms to the expectations of society without rebellion—except that she wants to go to the university even though her grandfather and relatives want her to get married immediately after high school and have children.
Readers of this 2014 novel who have read the 2015 Helena’s Choice will be familiar with some of its themes. Lipsi’s Daughter begins in 1988, thus giving a more contemporary picture of Greek society than Helena’s Choice, which begins in 1838. Yet in both novels, the girl has two men who are interested in marrying her. In both novels, the girl falls in love with one of them, the one who is skilled in Greek art history and archeology. And in both novels, the marriage decision for the heroine is put on hold as the story develops.
The reason for the delay in Lipsi’s Daughter that allows Ipatia to go to America and graduate from the university is unique if somewhat wanting in credibility. What the novel does well is to show what it is like to be immersed in two cultures at once.

1988-1992? Seriously? I think the author needs to study up on time periods before publishing.

Having written this novel and shared it with family and friends, I can only say that I have enjoyed writing it as well as reading it. I wanted to capture the Greek culture and transport the reader to another world where people have the same problems and issues as we do.
This is an orphaned girl's coming of age story, where she leaves the Greek isle of Lipsi to get a college education and in the process falls in love with a wealthy shipowner's son. Obstacles get in their way, but true happiness can only be found where there is love.

This book transported me deep into this young woman's world and culture. I felt pained for her in many parts as she struggled to come into her own. Her great difficulties of being held back by a strict family psychologically (driven by guilt) made me frustrated because she was wasting time and opportunities, but in the end her heart prevailed. This is a great story for the hopeless romantic.
