The island’s balmy air embraced Barbara as she stepped through the door, a fragrant breeze teasing her hair and caressing her face. The sun had disappeared, leaving a thin line of red tinting the horizon clouds in the darkening sky as she strolled barefoot toward the shoreline where lazy waves washed onto the sand.

What a rollercoaster this book was and I loved it a lot. It’s a different one and I am glad I found it. The premise was unique, the main characters names sounded interesting, and the cover was so pretty. Also there was a bunch of beautiful moments and writing and I got lost in the words. Yeah, I loved this book. If I didn’t make that clear already.

Yes, it’s another Civil War love story, and I am slowly moving away from these stories. But why not enjoy a few more?

Barbara Thackrey, is a herione that I love and root for. She is stubborn, which I found a bit irritating at times, but I also admired her strength. Her father is in a Confederate prison, and she travels from her home in Ohio to rescue him.

Trevor (his middle name is Ishmael) is a cool and steamy hero. His mother left to England with her daughter after Trevor’s father was killed at Shiloh. He has a few sisters, and we learn he was a playful young boy in his childhood. I loved Trevor as much as I did Barbara, though Barbara seems to be the main protagonist of the story more then Trevor is.

One thing I would have liked though is more of a proper back story to the characters. We never get to really know who Barbara’s mother is. Barbara states she never even knew her mother, and I guess that’s fine. Still would have been nice to know some details though.

We learn that Barbara’s mother has a father that is a farmer, and she died early on before Barbara could remember her. That’s it really. We know she grew up in Ohio in the North, and her father is a smart man as he owns a lot of books. Barbara also has a few friends around the area that are Indians. We also know that Barbara’s father taught her a few things, as she constantly refers back to his advice when she is in situations she needs to figure out.

Most of the book has a bunch of bizarre and unbelievable but fun adventures that I would have never really expected for a book set during the Civil War: going high up into the sky with a hot air balloon, getting tossed and stranded from a ship in a storm, and escaping a mad crazy French doctor who has weird rituals on a exotic island.

Yeah it’s silly but hey Gone With The Wind holds no candle to this book. Barbara and Trevor also are way much more better then Scarlett and Rhett.

Anyways, the side characters include a British journalist, a freed slave who is the daughter of the main antagonist, and Native Americans, even though they didn’t play a major role in the story.

Long story short, Barbara runs all over the place with Tibba, the daughter of the antagonist, and debates her feelings for Trevor. They make love on a island and he kidnaps her in a box car after she sets out to find her father.

The main antagonist gets shot, Tibba gets married and leaves Barbara to start a new life. Barbara goes back home to say goodbye to her childhood and then leave, but she finds Trevor again even though she believes he is dead. He asks her to marry him and they have their HEA in a log cabin that the Native Americans built. Trevor was washed ashore and Barbara’s friend rescued him.

Anyways though, a wild and fun book. It could have been longer as there was room for more, but I still loved it.
