From Ancient Assyria to the Roman Empire this book is literally a tour de force of warfare in the ancient world.

The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs of archaeological evidence and excellent graphic reconstructions.

If I have any reservations it is simply that it does not address the end of the bronze age, the Mycenaeans the Hittites and the Sea peoples. Of course, some of those areas were less well researched when the book was published in 1980.

Nevertheless it remains one of my favourites.

A bit old now, of course. Sometimes a bit fuzzy, some strange conclusions.

Otherwise a ok read, some nice illustrations. The part about Greece and Rome are the best.
