This is a sweet tale!

It’s been a tradition in the family for years to go ride the swan boats in Boston on opening day, so grandmother and granddaughter set out.

You’ll learn the history of how the boats were started (by a husband and wife team), why they chose swans and other interesting facts.

We visited Boston and rode the boats: watch my reel!

Ages: 2 - 8

Content Considerations: nothing to note.

Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

We got this book in June 2018 on our trip to New England from the Swan Boat shop. It's a cute book that talks about how the swan boats started (in 1877) and have continued to this day in the care of the same family. The history and progression of the swan boats and Boston Common is interesting and enjoyable to read about. The last page of the book gives some info and pictures of many of the flowers that are planted each year in the park.

The illustrations are too cartoon-ish for my taste but they are colorful and detailed so they still are fun to look at.

The story is told in the context of a grandma telling her granddaughter about their family tradition of riding on the swan boats on the first day they open every year in mid-April. It's a sweet story of a special day being preserved through the generations.

It's a little lengthy for reading to younger children. I think it would be nice to read to read to K-2 before going to the Public Gardens, to talk about the history and the area.
